They offered my wife and I taste test and spoke to us about each bottle and its associated flavor profile. The best was that they didn't try to sell me on anything, it was a genuine conversation. Excellent customer service! Overall, I walked out of there, mission accomplished, with a great experience, two bottles of whiskey, and about five small sample bottles for a little under €200. There's traditional art, team shirts and creative crafts on sale here, but the real connection comes when browsing the food shelves. Back there is a haven of sweets and instant mixes, snacks, jars and cereals plus case after case of sweet pop and juice. Down on the floor a galvanised tin tub held an array of mix-n-match snacks that, had I not been holding firm to my NYR I would have jumped right into.

Well, firstly because they have the most incredible range of wine from all over the world. They even stock my favourite label from Western Australia, Vasse Felix, which I've not found ANYWHERE else in Ireland. Secondly, their staff are wonderful. They are not the haughty, pretentious types you might expect to find in such an establishment. Oh no, they take the time to talk to every customer who enters the store, ask about their wine preferences, suggest future purchases for the expansion of the customer's palate, and discuss wines previously purchased and liked/disliked. Chris, a lovely guy from the UK, spoke to me while I was in store, and while I'm by no means a wine connoisseur, or a bulk-buyer, he still took the time out to find out about the kind of vino I like to drink. From there he formed a kind of 'career trajectory' for my wine tastes, based on what I drink now and what I should be trying. I found him incredibly helpful and not at all dismissive of my 'bargain bin' level of wine knowledge. While I was in the store I heard the other sales assistant speaking to a woman who'd had a less than amicable experience with her last purchase. They discussed the reasons for her not enjoying that particular bottle (these things happen, everyone has different tastes), and he made suggestions on wines that might provide her with an experience more to her liking. The fact that she came back to the store and trusted these guys to advise her on her next purchase really says something about the level of service provided here. So you see, at The Corkscrew, wine, as life, is about the journey, not the destination, it's about branching out and trying something new and it's not about sticking to the tried and true (although, in fairness to these guys, they have tried nearly every bottle in store). If you want a wine merchant who will know you by name, and who in less than 10 minutes will be able to diagnose your particular drinking condition and provide you with the remedy, make The Corkscrew your off-licence of choice.

Buying alcohol in 'Booze 2 Go' is a peculiar experience. The cashiers are shielded from any form of…read moreinteraction by bulky bulletproof glass. The set-up is far more reminiscent of a high security bank than an off-license. The drink they have to offer is presented within a display cabinet to the right of the shop with all price tags stuck to the front of the bottles. Akin to a bank or post office you drop your money into the drawer at the counter and close the cover that is then towed back to the cashier's side. Having told them your drink order you are then passed it again through the same means of the sliding drawer with the alcohol in a paper bag. This feels very surreptitious, very 'underground' if not moderately corrupt. Of course it's not and all they are doing is protecting themselves against the misconduct of abusive and light-fingered, thieving customers prominent in the centre of Dublin but you can't help but feel faintly nervy by the curious set up. The drinks are cheaper than purchasing them elsewhere with a can of Bulmers priced at €1.35. This however bodes for a narrow stockpile. When I last visited they did not sell Druids and so I was forced to go elsewhere. Booze 2 Go is definitely creditable if we're talking about acquiring low-priced booze, but it couldn't give the impression of being more disreputable if it tried. NB/ Any purchase done by credit/ laser card has to be 12 euros or over.

Excellent wine service from Berry Bros & Rudd…read more We decided to bring our own wine to our wedding service and contacted Jessica Lavin of Berry Brothers and Rudd Ireland. I was met by Jessica in their office on Pemborke Street (they no longer have the retail premises on Harry Street. I've contacted Yelp about this.). She brought me through our options and the budget I outlined. She recommended some wines and we then got two of each to sample and decide on i.e. two reds, two whites and two sparklings. These were shipped out to us and we got drinking - what an awful job, I know ;) Final three selections were decided on and the order made with Jessica. The wine was then delivered to the hotel the week before our wedding. So so handy. And people loved the wine we ordered. I cannot recommended BBR enough for when you need to order wine in bulk. The service was so professional and personal too.

We hit the Spar to have stuff in our hotel room, for when we get hungry between meals. And the Spar did just that! They also sell random things that you might run out of on your trip.
