Good ice cream, hit or miss food, seething hostility from the service. This place is convenient to Mass MoCA, tucked in by the main entrance to the museum building, just past the gift shop. Some signage would have helped, because we had trouble locating it on our first visit. The place can get backed up, especially when timed events are finishing up. Service is not slow when there are few people, but the kitchen seems to get backed up after a line forms. I had the black bean burrito, which was pretty tasty with cholula, and my daughter had a grilled cheese. The caesar salad my wife had was not so great, mostly due to the rock hard slabs of cold chicken breast. So, the food seems hit or miss. We really enjoyed the ice cream, house made with good flavors and served slightly soft. The service was deplorable, though it may have just been our experience with one server. The young lady taking our order was extremely rude and seemed very put upon having to take our simple, friendly order. She even disappeared mid-order to go stand idle somewhere else and it was unclear if she was coming back until I called out to her to which she snapped "I'm listening!" but it certainly wasn't clear that she was listening. I will always look past mediocre service and bad days - the service industry is tough - but the outright hostility is unacceptable in any social setting. Management should definitely be on top of this and take more care on who is placed in customer facing roles. read more

On our first ever trip to MassMOCA for Loud Weekend we took a break between sets to grab a bite to eat. Luckily we beat the rush but I can understand why other helpers commented on the wait time and ordering process. We ordered the Mediterranean salad which was fresh and served with a scoop of mashed chickpeas, I hesitate to call with Hummus because I did not taste tahini and it was rather thick and chunky. Also a generous slice of tasty bread. We also got a bowl of the Ghanaian chicken soup which was fabulous!! This "museum cafe" is quietly operation at a whole different level. The salads are lush and tasty. My Cobb Salad was large complete with all the goodies. Lickety Split was overall a great experience. When ordering at the inside station, I found the food to be healthy and generous. Over a few days at MassMoca, I ordered a chicken stew with bread, quiche and salad, and two excellent yogurt/granola parfaits. My food came in a reasonable amount of time and was well prepared and healthy. There seemed to be two additional Lickety-Split outposts on the campus during the weekend I was there. There was a LS window on the way to one of the main stages, and a LS tent set up for one of the bigger concerts. I found both of these spots confusing, with long wait times. To be fair, the people working these spots seemed newish and were confused themselves. Even so, i'm not going to hold any of that against the overall solid fare they offer to the guests of MassMoca! read more

Nice little cafe inside Mass MoCA. Sandwiches, salads, soups, other things. Quick service after we ordered, but there wasn't much of a rush on a Wednesday. BLT on rye not quite like others I've had in that it wasn't a huge gut buster. Good bread, good greens and the right amount of bacon. Perfect for pre-museum fuel! If you're looking for an inexpensive, quick bite, consider this cafe before you pay more at Gramercy, which is located in the building as you enter the grounds. read more

A splash of soy milk shouldn't cost $0.85!!! Unheard of. I asked for an ice coffee and a little soy milk (a splash) and they were going to charge me $0.85 and I had a fit! I can see being charged for soy if I had gotten a latte or something where a cup full was being used (though $0.85 is an outrageous price for the soy tax, typically it's $0.50 at most places; I'm sorry are we at an airport?) but NO ONE charges for soy milk if you are just using a splash for an ice coffee. The two young women said they had to charge me because the manager makes them charge for all soy usage, and I refused. After saying it was ridiculous and no one else does that, they back down and let me have a little soy with no extra charge. That's how it should have been from the beginning. Also the coffee wasn't very good and for a "cool, hip" kind of cafe it played off to be, I was disappointed by the lack of vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. I'm not sure why, but so far, museum food has consistently been good. I'm not sure why I'm always so skeptical, but...the Met has good food, the MOMA has a fantastic cafeteria, and...and...the MASS MoCA can be added to that list, too. This little cafe is perfect for a pre- or post-walk-around snack, and prices are totally affordable, especially for, well, a museum, which would normally jack prices up. Nope! Everyone at my table was excessively pleased with their food. One of my friends got some sort of Senegal chicken soup that he said was delightful (if I remember correctly, it was only around $3.50, too). My other friend got a hummus wrap with chips (around $6.95) that had piles of hummus, avocado, and lettuce. She was in heaven. I got the mushroom quiche, which ran pretty small for $4, but was tasty nonetheless. They actually messed up my order, but fixed it almost immediately. Yay, customer service! This place also serves up a satisfactory espresso with a nice, thick foam. I recommend! Also worth noting, if you have kids, I'm sure they will love the ice cream they serve there. There's also plenty of space to sit and stare out the windows. This place really is great! read more

The food is tolerable. The order taking and delivery system is seriously deficient. You line up to a single station, order and get a number on a stick. We were 3 people. One third of the order came out, with no tableware, so I got up and found some plastic ware. After another 10 minutes, the runner came out with most of the other two orders, this time with stainless tableware. Management and training would be a good idea here. read more

This is a nice museum cafe for coffee and small bites. The atmosphere is beautiful, especially on Sunday with free live music over brunch time. Bakery goods are really good, as well as salads and soups, but I personally got really disappointed by the sandwiches. Bread is smooshy, and it breaks in your hands while you are trying to eat your sandwich. Just get their amazing muffin and cookies! Last, ice coffee got serve in a common plastic glass, with no top. I ordered an espresso and a cookies & cream in regular cups. Both were too sweet and had an artificial elasticity to it as though it were a piece of chewing gum. While eating the espresso, there was a misplaced crunchy piece of ice cream that made me immediately throw it in the garbage. To top it all off, the young woman working at the stand was extremely rude, giving annoyed looks and clearly showed she would rather spend her time chatting with her friend. Great place for lunch! I had the turkey, brie, and avocado sandwich and it was super good. The place was busy when I went by the service was quick. It is in the Mass MOCA museum, so it's very convenient. We had the Vermont goat cheese salad and the Cobb salad, both of which were good. It took a while to get the salads, but you can't beat the convenience. Recommended. read more

Just finished another lunch at Lickety Split. Unfortunately, we probably won't return on our next trip to Mass Moca. There were only a few people who were there when we arrived but we still waited over 25 minutes for our kids peanut butter sandwich, a salad, and a chicken caesar wrap. We saw many employees working at the time so we were surprised by how long it took. Luckily, the food was pretty good, per usual. I really enjoy the goat cheese salad and the candied walnuts on it taste amazing. The portions are generous as well. What really bothered me, however, was the fact that we watched numerous people go to the secondary register and get ice cream, but then when my toddler wanted to get just a kiddie cone we waited over five minutes while multiple employees walked by and ignored us, only to have one finally come over to us and tell us that they were too busy and that if we wanted ice cream we now had to wait in the now very long food ordering line to literally get one scoop of ice cream that would've taken one minute to complete the entire transaction. At least put a sign up if you're going to close a register so people with young children aren't waiting around, only to be disappointed. After an already too long lunch with a lot of waiting we obviously weren't going to wait another fifteen minutes in line to order one scoop of ice cream and wait for knows how long to actually receive it. read more

The slow eater I was with (who ordered a sandwich and a bowl of soup) ordered after me and still finished everything before I even received my food despite me checking in with the kitchen to make sure they hadn't forgotten about me (they said they didn't).
