Although they look quite scruffy they are lovely little shops. The cream and grey colours make them look very dated straight away but regardless the food is usually really nice. It's cheaper than Greggs but still quite pricey. The chicken bakes are 85p each which isn't bad. However I do prefer this shop when what you buy is warm as often cold the food is quite greasy. I do find the long queues annoying on a lunchtime though.

I have to say, I have some hazy halcyon childhood memories of ice-cream sundaes or coke-floats in this place, so that may perhaps colour my perceptions of it somewhat. But I've taken children recently, and their faces light up in the same way I'm sure mind did. They have 4 cafes around the town centre, but this is the one I am constantly drawn back to. Set on the edge of town proper, opposite the Haymarket bus-station and near the University (with St. James not to far either!) it just feels a little more laid-back than the town-centre branches. As soon as you go in there's a more old-school feel than your modern coffee bars, accentuated by the photos of the store through the ages and the ice-cream carts which line the walls. The clientelle tends more towards locals and shoppers, with the students seemingly not noticing this is under their noses, so there is little modern cool (affected or otherwise) here, just a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They have a good range of sanwiches, also generally available as baguettes, panini, or wraps, and a choice of hot-food including a classic all-day breakfast. There's a great selection of cakes, and the coffee is good if not the best in town. But really, its the ice-cream that draws people back here. As soon as you sit down your eye is draw to the colourful photos on the comprehensive sundae menu. Its hard to concentrate on the main course as your mind turns over the question of the inevitable desert. The choice is dizzying and inventive, with themes by flavour, or colour, or liquer. As soon as you've made your choice the inevitable question is Which will I have the next time?, as you know there'll be a next time as soon as you start eating your current choice. Like many of the best things the secret seems to be quite simple: just make great tasting ice cream. Like the classic gelati, this just tastes of what it should - freshly and vibrantly. The concept of Hey, I know what we should put in this strawberry ice cream: strawberries. Not those chemicals someone has decided make us think we're eating strawberries. As I say, simple, but all to often goes wrong, in this country at least. But not at Mark Toneys! Cones are available, for when you can't manage a whole sundae, and take-away is available on most items too. They've just opened a Subway next to this branch, and I'm hoping that doesn't draw too much food business away. But these guys have been doing this for over 100 years now - I'm sure they've seen off plenty of other pretenders in that time!

Quirky décor with a mish mash of wooden tables and chairs with some on slightly elevated positions near the window where you can soak in the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The food is fabulous! I often take advantage of the breakfast menu which is served until 2pm....the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup are highly recommended. They also offer a range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes and cakes. No WiFi frustratingly so I do have to move on if I am intending to do work for any length of time. The staff are very friendly however and I have been here so many times recently I am only one coffee away from my free drink using my stampcard! Finally don't miss out on Blake's monthly comedy night after hours and each Friday they showcase live music so don't be fooled into thinking Blake's is just a coffee house open in traditional hours!

Basically its a greasy spoon type cafe but it is family run and very enjoyable to eat here. The menu is exstensive, the staff are friendly and the food is home made, tasty and cheap. It does get busy around lunchtime everyday so you may have to wait for a table and i have been known to share a table with strangers in the past. The food is why people come because its proper meals: raost dinners, fish n chips, chops, omelettes, fry ups, pies etc all home made and freshly cooked yum x

Everything is very basic and there is nothing good or special to write home about here…read more I suppose it is ok to get a cup of tea either in or to takeaway but apart from that there is nothing special and it's no more than a run of the mill greasy spoon. Every time I have eaten here I have regretted it. Typical food is pie and chip, chips and beans etc and even then it's nothing special. If I ran a greasy spoon, I would at least get something special on the menu each day like a curry or a casserole and I also would make sure my basic food what was served in practically all of meals served would be good quality instead of chips that have been fried half a dozen times. This is all a shame as this café is in a great location.

They have a varied range of sandwiches and cakes etc which are quite good quality. The staff are lovely but seem to be a bit slow in serving customers especially at peak times during the week. Nice little cafe but a shame about the stairs.
