For those who have read my previous review I have upped my rating to a fantastic four stars…read more.. I went in on a busy Monday lunch time to have around a 5 minute wait in a small que - this place is quaint inside so always seems packed but serve is quick. Last time I was here I opted for the panini but this time I gave one of their jacket potatoes a go. Deciding to go for a topping of tuna and cheese I was asked if I wanted the cheese on before or after (nice touch), if I wanted the side salad (lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers) and also the addition of a slaw when asked. Made with purple cabbage it was a tasty touch. Paying 3.80 it was a steal when I saw the sheer amount of food I got for my money! I didn't eat for the rest of the day! Why didn't I give it 5* - no option for baked beans?! Definitely a staple for any jacket potato....

A lovely friendly deli-style sandwich shop right opposite Florita's, not far from Central Station…read moreand the Bigg Market. There is always a good choice of fresh ingredients, and some interesting mixes of filling. My favourite is sweet chilli chicken with peanut butter :-) Yummmmm... They also do wraps, salad boxes and Ciabatta toasties (I had pastrami and swiss with jalapeno and sweet chilli dressing today, that'll keep the cold at bay! Woo! They do proper coffee and a reward card, and some nice cakes savouries like bhajis and cumberland sausage sandwich. I had soup and a bun a couple of weeks back, which was very warming. Today it was parsnip, carrot and apple I believe! Interesting! The place is rather "compact and bijou" though, but there is space in the window on the red and chrome stools to shelter from the rain. The decor is American/Italian diner in feel, with chalk boards, and there is often music playing. The team behind the counter are very smiley and friendly, and Duncan, Kevin and Sophie will quickly recognise you when you go back, and welcome you like old friends, unlike the miserable pond life at Subway! Apparently they do outside catering too, although I haven't seen what that consists of. The web site is http://www.thehippohouse.com

    Kracklin - Porchetta

One of my Canadian friends just informed the rest of the group exuberantly that she found a place…read morethat serves poutine! I am not a poutine connoisseur, but the menu revealed lots of enticing sandwiches, many of which have an American deli look to them, so my husband and I ventured off to investigate for lunch one Saturday. Love the look of this new place - big menu on the wall, enticing displays of porchetta and other meats, as well as yummy homemade sweet things on display. We ordered at the front, and then our food was brought out to us at a communal table. We shared a salt beef sandwich, which tasted a lot like those back in my home country. Bread wasn't as good as a proper American deli, but the flavor of the pickle and the mustard adding a tang to the corned beef (aka salt beef) was so familiar. The meat was really tender and felt fresh, not heavy and oppressive as these big sandwiches can seem. We got a side of kracklin with apple jam - this is, of course, pork rinds (fried skin/fat). It's crunchy like a bag of crisps, but tastes like pork, which is weird, but also kind of delicious. My husband wasn't a massive fan, but I like all things salty and crispy, and thought the apple jam alongside was fantastic. We met one of my friends there by total coincidence, who got the poutine, and said it needed more cheese. She was impressed that they actually managed to find cheese curds, as they don't seem to exist in the UK, but they get them from a local dairy. Win! One of the owners said she was surprised and excited by how well the business was going, and hoping to expand the menu even more soon - right now it's just a couple of sandwiches and sides, albeit very creative ones that you can't get anywhere else. A welcome change from the usual boring sandwich shops you find everywhere, we'll be back for sure!

Poutine should have a thick, rich gravy and the cheese curds should not be cold. The french fries were OK I guess but I want something more for my money than just OK.
