Pumphreys have been roasting coffee beans in Newcastle since 1750. Although the roasting rooms (and factory shop) are now out Blaydon way they continue to offer wonderfully fresh coffee in the heart of the town, with their stall in the Grainger Market.
They are situated near the Clayton Street end, about half-way along (near Mark Toneys, not too far from the cheese shop, sort of behind 'The Black Garter' - oh just follow your nose, trust me you won't miss it ;)
They offer an amazing range of 30+ freshly roasted coffees, and sell as beans or grind to your requirements, from 100g samplers to by-the-kilo sacks for the committed insomniac-wannabe. I've always found the staff to be knowledgable and helpful in recommending a coffee to your taste, or letting you take a smell of the beans beforehand (but then its always fun to experiment too :)
There are a huge range of options from mild, to flavoursome, to dark, to the should-carry-a-health-warning Turkish espresso, covering organic, fairtrade, decaff and flavoured along the way. Truly something for every coffee lover!
And for those whose coffee-love veers toward obsession they're with you every step of the way with a comprehensive array of paraphenalia from cappuccino and latte cups, to milk thermometers and frothing jugs, to flavoured syrups, and all the way up to cafetieres and espresso machines.
Even those who seek a little more variety are catered for, with a range of gourmet and speciality leaf teas, including herbal and tisanes. Plus,to round it all off, they have some great authentic biscotti (or flavoured coffee-beans if you just gotta push that caffeine fix higher!).
Can't recommend enough for an authentic fresh coffee experience! read more
