This is somewhere that you feel less a diner and more a guest.
The decor is delightful farmhouse style without being twee or pretentious. It does feel pretty crowded at lunch time, but this is down to the shear numbers of people who get their sandwiches here.
At Grannies it isn't about getting A sandwich, it's about getting THE sandwich.
I used to work nearby and bought my sandwiches from them most days; nearly five years after leaving the area I went back whilst on holiday and as I walked in the guy behind the counter gave me a nod and said I'll get your usual. Now that is service.
During the same holiday I took some French relatives, who have been famously and vocally unimpressed by British eateries in the past, to the Grannies Cafe (down stairs). We ordered the sharing platters with wine for the grown-ups and fruit juice for the kids in a word they were amazed by the variety, quality and value. When the bill came my cousin just couldn't believe how little a lunch, with wine!, cost. This may have been helped a little by the £ EUR exchange rate, but they are good value for money.
Definitely worth a visit or four! read more
