Staggeringly delicious scones and ploughman's…read more Our family of four recently had a late breakfast here that featured - no joke - the best scones we had in a scone filled tour of Great Britain from Dover to Edinburgh through London and the castles of Northumberland. Both they and the ploughman's were so good that we ended up eating lunch here as well. And while the soup, salad, and sandwiches we had for lunch weren't quite up to the same level they were still mighty tasty. My only nit (and it is a small one) is that though the coffee was reasonably tasty the sharp contrast between my smallish cup of joe and my wife's enormous pot of tea was more than a little dispiriting.

The staff were very friendly and made a fuss of me for my birthday, which was very appreciated! I had the Victoria Sponge cake, which was vegan-friendly and delicious! The servings were *very* generous! The rest of my group enjoyed their cake as well as flavoured hot chocolates. Beautiful, charming and delicious. The owner drops off a little timer with every pot so you don't overbrew your tea. The scones were delicious. But really, the crowning achievement was the hot chocolate. The owner told us her friend owns Coquet Chocolate and she buys these hot chocolate "sticks" from her. Unfortunately, she doesn't sell them, so I don't know if we'll ever have amazing hot chocolate like that again, but it's like an upside down popsicle of chocolate that she melts in warm milk and it's AAAHHHMAAAAAAAZIIINNNNGGGG. The only downside was that they didn't serve soup after a certain hour and we were quite hungry and there weren't any sandwiches either, so it's not really a lunch place. My Mum went for the lamb and goats cheese burger that was divine! The lamb was cooked to perfection with it being pink in the middle and served with a yummy mint yogurt dip and sun-dried tomatoes. I was stuck between the club sandwich and BBQ pulled pork open sandwich. On recommendation I went for the pork, which was served, on sourdough toast with melted Monterey cheese - heaven! I was having food-envy looking at the lamb burger but was not in anyway disappointed with my pork. Finishing off our meal with the Parlour's specialty - ice creams all round! I have a new found love for the homemade lemon meringue cone... There is so many flavours including apple pie and the originals too - its an ice cream lovers heaven! A really well done place, with layout and set up. Sometimes tea shops along the high way have a whole room full of junk they are trying to sell to you and then cramped sitting. But not here I think I saw a few cute things for sale but mostly they were focused on their food and I was told famous ice cream! Well done for keeping the place about whats most important... the food! Friendly service and tasty treats. It was a bit slow because they were super packed and under staff. The waiter apologised for the wait and said someone had called in ill! I can only rate it on the cake and coffee because I didn't eat anything there but I imagine it would be good .

Which is nice since the only part of Howick Hall open to visitors is the Earl Grey Teahouse. Children under 16 (accompanied by adults) are free which is also nice. Unfortunately, the food and service simply did not measure up. The Earl Grey tea itself was tasty - as were the egg salad and watercress sandwiches. Sadly, there were no cucumber sandwiches and the carrot/curry chicken sandwiches were just OK (if a little weird). But the scones and cakes were staggeringly disappointing - bone dry and way too sweet they were basically inedible. It isn't often that we leave scones or cakes behind - even crumbs - but we left most of ours on this day. As for the service, though it was never made clear the teahouse seemed to work on the theory that everyone is your server. Which in a well run restaurant is great. But here, 'everyone is your server' meant that 'no one is your server'.

In my opinion, good value for money and well worth a visit if you are in the area. There are seats outside as well, if you want to take in the country air or have a cigarette.
