    Washington's Candy

Almost every state has a notable sweet treat, to call their own, like Hershey's Chocolates, from Hershey, PA, Key Lime Pies, from the Florida Keys and Hammond's Old Fashioned Sweets, from Denver, CO! Welp, my home state of WA has had one, that's been around for almost 100 YEARS! What is it, you ask..... Aplets & Cotlets ( @apletscotletsstore / @apletsandcotlets ), in Cashmere, WA! They are a form of #TurkishDelights , made with local fruits and sometimes nuts. They were mostly popular with the older crowd, but then they got a resurgence, in the last few years, with the news that they might close! Another company bought them out and revived the well-loved sweets, back to life! Now they have a new line called Fruitlets, which are a simpler and more fruit gummy like candy, a variety of chocolate covered fruits & nuts, plus a delicious array of other tasty gummies! Move over Haribo! Liberty Orchards is comin' to getcha! So, give Aplets & Cotlets a try! You'll be glad you did! #PassportToGoodEats #FollowMeOnIG

Spontaneously decided to check out this candy store and it was an awesome surprise considering I had no idea what to expect. Upon entering the person working was getting ready to start the next tour so I joined right in. It's very brief, but really interesting to see how the candy is made. The tour guide was really friendly also. After the tour I tried some free samples, looked around and grabbed some more candies to try out. The pre packaged candies are really delicious, but some of the self serve/bag yourself candies were a bit stale and hard to chew. There is an array of souvenirs for sale also as well as an affordable $1 coffee/hot cocoa area. Restrooms and a bit of seating available that looks out the windows. Definitely a neat place to check out!

    Got this for my Grandad!

Aplets and Coplets! My aunt, my uncle, and I walked past the main store (Liberty Orchards) on each of our walks through Cashmere when I was visiting them in November 2020. The last day we walked past the store on Thursday the 12th of November 2020 we walked past right as two people were walking out of the store to their vehicle with a number of purchases. Eyeing them I decided that I would make one quick stop on my way out of town and back home to Shoreline that midday. There is a parking lot off to the side of the store as well as street parking available straight in front of the store front. Notices regarding COVID-19 precautions were posted on the front door to the shop. Inside the store has its merchandise beautifully arranged in different displays. I love aplets and cotlets and can eat an 8 ounce container full of these sweet treats easily in one sitting. Trying to stay healthy during the holidays and thinking of my family I decided to purchase some of the sugar-free sweets for my Grandad. He lives in a senior home and it can be hard to get him things at times, so I got the sugar-free candies as the workers are more likely to let him have that. It wasn't too busy when I stopped. The worker at the front counter was jovial and gracious in her interactions. I even got a warm welcome when I entered the store. A cozy shop ambience adds to the all around positive shopping experience.

This is a historical landmark and gem of a place. You must stop by if passing through. These treats are such a delight and every time I eat these I always think of Edmond from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. A scene particularly in the book is when the white witch hands Edmond addition of Turkish delights and I never knew that these were based off that but I had a feeling because of how old is described and liberty Orchards even sells Turkish delights! These are great to have all year round and awesome that you're able to order and have them shipped online across the country... Especially around Christmas time! I love that they have these new Hawaiian themed ones.

Interesting factory but I was more interested in the FREE samples and the killer bargain deals!
    John R.

I'll be honest: the factory tour is nice and interesting, hearing the history is cool and all... but it's really about the FREE samples and the killer deals. Lots of products that you don't find in the stores and the big pound bags with slightly irregularly shaped pieces at bargain prices. Where else can you find this much Applets & Cotlets at such a low price? Nowhere else! So yes, very enjoyable visit, we each scarfed down a handful of free samples and left with two heavy shopping bags of goodies, about 30 pounds total. If you are in the Leavenworth or Cashmere area you MUST check this place out, Applets & Cotlets is an iconic heritage delicacy from WA state.

Iconic candy of Seattle and the Northwest for 100 years!. Quite a loss if it doesn't continue somehow...

It took only about 15 minutes from Leavenworth (including ~8 minutes to route 97) and was a great sentimental detour for me. 5* Their fruit and nut candies were given to me when I first visited Seattle almost 30 years ago along with tours of Pike Place Market and the Space Needle so I see them as iconic to the Seattle experience. Had to make a pilgrimage here after hearing they were closing on June 1st. Was relieved to hear there is a possible buyer so it's no longer June 1st. Bought a whole bunch to share just in case (and since expiration date isn't until early 2022). It's a small simple store and factory but it felt good to have been there. They have short factory tours but it had already closed for the day when we got there shortly before closing time. Loved seeing the beautiful original stove in the store. It's a tasty candy and hope it continues somehow.

The factory tour is brief but it's really cool to see how aplets and cotlets are made! Kind of a mini Wonka factory. The shop is amazing, they have a huge selection of treats so even if you don't like the signature item there is probably something for you! I bought a lot of chocolates but after sampling them after I got home and finding out they're delicious and really good quality, I wish I'd gotten even more. The Orchard Bars are amazing too and are a great deal. We stopped in since it was raining and we wanted an indoor activity, but it's awesome and we'll be back next time we're in the area no matter the weather.

100 years and counting! For those who are not familiar with the brand, Aplets are fruit gelatin-like "jelly" candy with apples, honey and walnuts and covered with powdered sugar. Cotlets are made with apricots. Ate them as a kid so was very nostalgic to see where they are made. The factory and gift shop are open and available for tours. In addition to the original recipe there are many new variations - berry, nut-free, sugar free, tropical, etc. They also sell dried fruits, nuts, chocolates, protein bars and souvenirs. Tucked away in Cashmere, WA is a gem of a fruity candy and nut store. If you are driving between Seattle and Spokane be sure to stop by and pick up a box!

This was my one and only unplanned stop this trip but after discovering this in the inn's guest directory and seeing how close we were to the Liberty Orchards Factory (15-20 minutes away in Cashmere), I had to squeeze in at least a stop by the store even though I did not have time for the factory tour. My dad is a huge fan of Liberty Orchards products requesting Fruit Festives and/or Aplets and Cotlets when available locally during the holiday season. The prices were reasonable and much cheaper than buying them at home and the variety of flavors (berry fruits, orchard fruits, tropical fruits) and options (nut-free, sugar-free, chocolate covered) include many I have never seen before. So I felt like a kid in a candy store picking up 11 boxes of 5 different varieties for under $40 that filled up my entire carry on luggage.

This place is located in downtown Cashmere. For some reason, it seems more hyped up than it actually is. The factory shop offers rather limited selection and there isn't too much to buy. After trying their samples, I was a bit underwhelmed. Most of the items were too sweet and sticky for me (kind of taste like gummy bears). I did not go on the factory tour, but I could see employees making the candies from the windows in the factory store.

Inside the store, take the tour if you can
    Nancy L.

I would have bought the entire store if it would fit in my suitcase. The bags of delicious "seconds" come in many flavors. I bought 6 flavors, now I need to get on the web site and order more

Get off the highway in Cashmere and let these signs guide you to the right place.

Ask the Community - Liberty Orchards

    Do Aplets smell like apple?

They have some apple smell since there is apple juice concentrate and apple flavor in there... but there are also other flavors as well. We don't add artificial enhancers, so it's not as strong as artificially-flavored candies can be.

Currently, they're only letting small groups of six or less inside, so you may have to wait outside for a bit. The folks inside got everybody through quickly. They have a moderate selection of some old-school candy, including some really old-school stuff that would get your grandparents excited! It also got some more modern, old stuff like big league chew. Nothing made you feel more alive than shredded I will come design to look like tobacco! A big selling point is the fact that they have Winegars ice cream as well as a number of other funky flavors. One of the kid got pop rocks ice cream, another rocky road, and another a delightful sorbet. They also have some pretty cool antique showcases that housed the candy. You definitely have to watch the kids as their favorite thing while we were there was to lean on the glass case from the 1890s. One of the best things we found were the handmade chocolates that they have that came in a number of different flavors. The rosemary with sea salt, three citrus and lavender were the favorites, no the other four or five options that they had looked very nice. It was pretty cool to be able to get high end chocolates as well as gummy candy in the shape of cheeseburgers from the same place. The prices were good and the selection with solid and fun. This is definitely a spot you should check out!

Chelan Toys & Sweets is the second place in Downtown Chelan that serves hard scoop ice cream, with the other being the ice cream parlor located in The Landing. Both of these places are within short walking distance of each other on E Woodin Ave, on opposite sides of the street. The prices at Chelan Toys & Sweets (see photo) are lower than those at The Landing, and they also make floats, flurries, shakes and dirty sodas. While the ice cream at The Landing had more of a gourmet or homemade flavor, the ice cream here was still good enough for our party, especially when it came down to the kids' tastes. Comparing our separate visits to these two establishments, we spent about $30 at The Landing and $20 at Chelan Toys & Sweets for similar orders/quantities of ice cream. Also worth mentioning: the wait lines are much shorter here than at The Landing (probably because tourists see The Landing when they first come into town, and not this place). The staff who served us was very cordial and shared their opinions on the store's most popular dirty soda (when asked), as well as let us sample a few of the cream flavors (they had 24) in advance. Bringing up The Parlor as a comparison one more time, although their ice cream was good, it came at a higher cost combined with longer lines and impersonal, "assembly line" service (with no samples). In contrast, the ice cream counter at Chelan Toys & Sweets had more menu items/options, lower prices, and a personal, "local" (not touristy) atmosphere.
