Safe Haven in Lake Bluff was a blessing for my child. He has high functioning autism, depression,…read moreanxiety, and executive functioning disorder. He is exceptionally intelligent and kind. The neighborhood school was not working for him. The teachers could not understand that he had difficulty in getting the information out of his brain and onto paper in the time allotted. He would be punished and ridiculed by the teachers! The bullying by his peers was relentless. I pulled him out in fourth grade. The district demanded he return. I said "Absolutely not!" After a lot of back and forth, they agreed to have him enrolled in Safe Haven. It was amazing! The class sizes were small. The teachers were very caring and attentive. His first social worker was so kind. (She eventually moved to a different school.) His second social worker was very nice, too. I watched my son finally get the help he needed to succeed. He attended Safe Haven from fifth grade through high school. He was allowed to take classes at our local high school, too. (Our high school had a very good psych case worker.) He participated on the sports, teams, too. The safety, emotional support, and nurturing helped my son achieve his potential. He graduated high school as an honor student at the local high school (meaning perfect 4.0 GPA), a National Honor Student, and an Illinois State Scholar, which means he was in the top 10% of all graduating high school seniors. He just graduated from a top rated University in May. I cannot thank Safe Haven enough for guiding and helping my son, when the local grade school district didn't care what happened to him. They like round pegs. If your child needs a small school that cares, check out Safe Haven in Lake Bluff. Remember: Illinois has a law that allows you to choose where your child can get the help they need, and your home district must pay for it.

The academic program here is so intense that even though I graduated somewhere around the bottom 1/3 of my class (I blame my ADHD and general teenage boredom), I was so well prepared that college was a total breeze by comparison. I was a student so long ago that I doubt any of the teachers I had are still here, but I found them to be mostly very supportive and of high quality. Some of them took a liking to me and were especially helpful. My suggestion to parents is to try and get your kid involved in other activities here besides just class. If they're not into sports, DHS has all kinds of clubs, youth groups, yearbook, newspaper, etc. Admissions people like seeing this stuff on your college application and it helps a lot with expanding your social circle.

All of the spaces used were up to date and had the latest technology. The library was large and was giving off very comfortable vibes. The classrooms were large and had spaces to charge your electronics. The cafeteria was large and had plenty of room for the students. There were two tournaments going on when I was there and there was enough space that neither tournament bothered the other. I highly recommend HPHS Highland Park High School!

I needed an in-state, small, private, non-affiliated school that was in both a good area and known for excellence in education. Turns out the only school that fit that criteria was Lake Forest College. At Lake Forest College, you are able to develop very close relationships with your Professors and fellow classmates. As someone who has graduate school on their radar, this is essential as letters of recommendation are not easily obtained at larger and more impersonal universities that many people are familiar with. The college has excellent internship programs for most all majors in particular, the psychology program. The practical experience acquired during these internships truly put you ahead the rest of the pack post-graduation. I highly recommend taking advantage of the internships as getting these experiences outside of Lake Forest College are very hard and not to mention rare to obtain. The best part about this place however, is the quality of education. You will learn so much here it's really unbelievable. With that said, you will also work soooo hard it's unbelieveable, making this place more of a grad-prep school than anything else. To attend here, it is a little pricey however, this school was ranked #11 for awarding financial aid in the nation. Most everyone gets some form of grant money or scholarship, which makes going here much more affordabale than what you may initially believe. Some other exciting things happening here will be the new Johnson Science Center which is expected to be completed around 2017. Johnson is being rebuilt to meet the growing demand of the ever popular Life Science majors such as Biology and Neuroscience. Speaking of which, the Neuroscience major here is truly outstanding with high placement into the field of medicine post-grad. Also, this school has an awesome Forester for Life alumni service that helps graduates find jobs, network, and revise resumes which is something a graduate like myself is very thankful for. In summation, if you are like me and would like to attend a small school offering such a huge package, Lake Forest College is for you! This is a beautiful campus. We were looking for the ice rink to see my grandson play hockey but…read moregot a bit turned around. I stopped a young man who was a student and he explained exactly turn by turn how to get to the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse which houses the rink. He was a shining example of the type of friendly, respectful and well spoken student one would hope to find here. The ice rink was state of the art and spectator seats were comfortable chairs and not the usual bleacher style seating. It was a comfortable temperature inside as well.
