The real problem for me was despite the fact there were quite a few people working there on a not very busy weekday no one offered me one minute of salesmanship or assistance. No one said hello when I walked in. No one asked me if I needed help. A bunch of wanna be hipsters roamed lethargically about the store doing who knows what. Not much. I tried on a top. I liked it so went to to the register to purchase it. Nary a greeting was uttered by the lackluster guy at the register. And after paying more than I should have in retrospect for the top, this lamebrain took it from the tousled heap he had made of it on the counter and deposited said "heap" into the bag. Oh...he asked me first if I wanted a bag. I had a tiny purse with me and nothing else. Yes, I want a bag even though in your eyes you want to make me out as a wasteful person hence your question because in this day and age no one should want a bag...ever. I am not going to walk out of there with a shirt slung over my bare arm. "Just give me a freaking bag", I wanted to yell. My husband thought I should return the overpriced top after such crappy service but that meant I would have had to spend more time in this awful store. After the payment transaction and before leaving the counter, I took my too expensive top out of the bag and proceeded to fold it properly as should have been done to begin with. Wanna be hipster dude said: "I would have done that for you!" Well, dude, why didn't you? Don't bother with this store. Ugh.

The selection of clothing is always changing in the store. I pop in about once a month to see what is new and I'm always amazed at the selection. The owner picks out every item in the store and she only carries brands that she personally believes in. Everyone that works there is very personable and helpful! If you follow them on social media you will see that they have seasonal sales. This is great because it is impossible to get Darn Tough socks on sale (unless you shop at Nomads)! So having a branch here in Portland is great--and take note that not only do they have great sales, but there's a seconds/repurposed area toward the back (and sometimes special displays) with items from the brand that are being re/upcycled, all of which cost less than regular price. What's even better is how local the vibe is in the store, and how well connected they are with the wider community of makers. Along with the brand's products the store carries little locally made gifts: everything from jewelry to soap to playing cards and chocolates. There's no set selection, but you'll always find little collections of items for sale around the store. And this weekend Toad & Co. hosted a holiday makers' market in the large back warehouse room, which was awesome! This brought in a bunch of Maine makers selling pottery, coffee, jewelry, leather goods, knitwear, cards, books, candles . . . basically I got most of my Christmas shopping done here! I love that Toad & Co. is sponsoring something like this and really connecting with the community--definitely the kind of business I want to support.

Aside from their clothing, both locations (Biddeford store as well) have many odds and ends, including jewelry that is made by smaller companies, some home goods like blankets, pillows and decorations; hats, shoes and belts, stationary, a few baby clothing items and some good gift items. Staff is helpful and there are many that go out of their way to make your experience shopping a good one. Clothing is also online on their website. This spot is not to be missed.
