Sharky's - Sisig Nachos: great concept but could use more meat

Our first night in Coron brought us to Sharkey's while in town seeking out dinner…read more Sharkey's is a restaurant and bar (a.k.a restobar) that is very foreigner friendly with English speaking staff on hand. It looks small on the outside but has ample seating inside. They accommodate large groups with the option to rent out a private party room off to the right for special occasions. They have a pool table and a separate stage where they hold nightly entertainment. The overall atmosphere is lively and fun. The menu is affordable for western standards with tasty and large portions. We had plenty left over afterwards. Service is slow so keep your expectations low. You're in Coron on vacation and everything here is run on island time. Express service is simply nonexistent. Adjust your plans if you're on a tight schedule otherwise you will be disappointed. They don't have a parking lot. We were dropped off via tricycle and this was one of the few restobars open past dinner hour.

As for the food, menu is big so there's something for everyone. They have plenty of Filipino food options as well as for their international tourists (like pizza and pasta). They also have a large drink menu. Beware that these are huge servings so definitely too much food for my husband and I. We came at 7pm and it was not crowded at all. They also had a very talented live band singing and playing instruments.

Live band playing was great except it was so loud you couldn't even hear the person sitting in front of you. Since last time they finished remodeling and now have a bar, which you can't sit at but alcohol is display. STAFF DO NOT COMMUNICATE - bar only know what's going on there, waitress has no idea what is going on with our orders or the kitchen! Nor did they know what they had on hand or if things were available. Yes this place is known but - why bother? I guess only if you're going for lobster but there are many other places that will do better. Ordered a large amount of food: Food came out in the most random order soups, oysters, noodles and Shanghai near the end of dinner way through our meal the rice came after having to be flagged down 2x and still not bringing the correct order. Oysters were dry and grilled to dried tidbits, with only calamansi since we didn't want cheese. Beef steak - I have never had beefsteak that tasted like chocolate and banana ketchup. I had to spit it out. Sizzling pusit - never came out the waitress said we didn't order it when it was written on the order tab they they whited out Calamares - didn't come out and they again denied it and whited it out on the order receipt Kinilaw was good, very citrusy and didn't taste fishy. Clam soup mediocre and luke warm Garlic butter shrimp was overcooked. Sinigang mainly consisted of fat and was luke warm did not have enough tamarind base to even call it sinigang. Banana and mango shakes - carried the meal! The waitress was horrible, even when speaking in the dialect she had no idea what was going on. Seriously don't waste your time or money here.

It's also a popular tourist spot to grab a cocktail (nothing craft...think Mai Tais and Woo Woos) and a bite to eat. We had wanted to sit in the sand but the restaurant is overrun by aggressive peddlers trying to sell pearl bracelets to you. The staff does nothing to help so we ended up sitting inside to avoid them. The menu is Filipino and full of favorites. We ended up getting the adobo calamari, prawn sinigang and grilled mackarel. The mackarel was a bit burnt which was disappointing and the adobo calamari chewy. The sinigang was pretty good however. Service was very slow and the restaurant sticky. The bathrooms were squalid and had no handsoap at all (it didn't even look like they ran out...just like it never existed) which only made the whole experience worse. This is one of the most popular spots in El Nido Town which makes me question everyone's travelling preferences. So glad this was a quick visit and we ended up staying in Sibaltan instead!

The shrimp on the sizzling plate was amazing but it is a chef's special so idk if it'll be here for long. The spicy squid was also delicious and tender. Drinks were strongggg, I asked the waitress what was the strongest lol #NeedThat Doggies will come by and will tell you through telekinesis that they are hungry but if you don't mind animals, then you're fine. Anyway live music is a plus. I also had two shots of don julio Anejo so yes it was a lovely dinner. This is not open 24/7 btw so yelp needs to update their hours

Perhaps a little touristy, but refreshing nonetheless with its lazy seating some of which are swings looking out to beautiful, serene Nacpan Beach. They have eye-catching and refreshing tiki cocktails which they serve in such fun glassware. I had the "More Fun Nacpan" (330 PHP) which was a light, gin-based cocktail made with calamansi juice. This came with a fun cut-out of an orange shaped into a sun! The cocktail was of decent strength but it was most importantly yummy. For food, we ordered the "pork" sizzling sisig and, oddly enough, a Margherita Pizza. The latter seemed to be a big deal with their wood-fired oven in plain view. We actually relished this greatly and, although doughy, I rather enjoyed that extra oomph of yeasty-ness. The sisig, on the other hand, was strange. First off, it was definitely beef and they only dusted something crispy on top. I could not confirm if this was pork skin or what. They had a band playing live music during our stay; some English hits, but Tagalog as well. The best kind of stray dog was begging at our feet while we ate, so cute! You're not a dog lover if their presence bothers you! A nice little spot to relax and escape the sun for a bit. If you need a bathroom, there is one located behind this restaurant as well.

We were directed to a nipa hut for seating and offered menus immediately. No AC but we did have a fan in our hut that was helpful in circulating air in the section. We ordered one of the seafood platters, fried chicken with fries, kang kong with garlic, mushrooms, long silog, a fresh buko juice, and a few soft drinks-Coke, Sprite, bottled water. The food came out almost immediately (the long silog was the last to come out). The fried chicken (by photo had 4 pieces and fries) was only 3 pieces with fries. Pretty tasty and definitely different from fried chicken back home. The kang kong was really good, especially with extra amounts of garlic. Same with the mushrooms, although I ate around the green chiles since I don't really do spice. I did like the platter of seafood--delicious fish, 2 clams were pretty good with seasoning, 6 shrimp with garlic, and small amount of kang kong with some garlic. Honestly, the platter was more appropriate to feed 2 to even 3 people (if that). The long silog came and was as expected with the rice, egg, 2 links of longganisa and some fresh fruit. The fresh buko was huge with a lot of coconut juice and meat inside. It came with a spoon and straw to sip out juice/scoop out meat. The presentation was amazing, but I felt like you were paying more for the look and less for the food portions. Service was also a bit sporadic. They were pretty attentive up until we got the food but I feel like they were under staffed for the amount of people in the venue. Also note that you have to use a tabo for hand washing and using the toilet. No running water here. The toilets and handwash area are located at the back of the restaurant and a hand wash sink area set up more central to the restaurant When checking out at the front, we were given the option of cash or charge. If you do charge, it is a 10% service fee.

Many seating options for you to choose from: traditional tables and chairs, low tables where you can sit on the floor, or a nipa hut style booth. No aircon but the fans are sufficient in the morning or at night when it's cooler. We felt adventurous, so we tried: - Crocodile sisig - Meat was ground up, couldn't really appreciate the crocodile meat's taste and texture. It would be better if meat was cut up into chunks instead. - Bird's Nest Soup - made from nests collected locally. This was a tasty soup, similar in texture and taste to a Chinese egg drop soup. - Sizzling Garlic Kangkong - tasty - Ensaladang Lato (Seaweed salad) - think of popping boba from the sea. - Roasted chicken - ok - Lechon Kawali - hard to chew - Sinigang na isda - ok - Complimentary fish or shrimp crackers - crunchy and tasty. Friendly accommodating staff, relaxing atmosphere with piano music playing in the background, and Island cats lounging under the tables waiting for your scraps: it's a solid place to have a meal.

It has all the signs and symptoms of a tourist trap, BUT it doesn't have to come with bad food. The food here is very good. In all actuality, the food here is pretty much chef inspired. It's delicious and it's calibrated to cater to the foreign toungue. Why wouldn't you order the seafood here? Look around you! 360° of ocean water. NO JOKE! Three things that jumped out and spoke to me was the Kilawin (filipino version of cevice), sea grape salad, and the Prawns (shrimp on steroids) La Serenita style. Let's talk about the Prawns La Sirenetta. I don't know who did the sauce, but it's mouth smashingly exquisite! Strong garlicky note with creamy coconut white wine sauce is truly out of this world. The sea grapes are a local thing with a western twist. I'm used to just eating this tossed with just tomatoes. The western twist with the vinaigrette is different, but it works. The tuna chunks,,, if you like sashime, you'll love this dish. Don't bother ordering the sea grapes and the tuna chunks if you're the chicken fingers and potato sticks type of person. Trust me, your tastebuds are too ignorant for that sort of thing. We came for a late lunch just because I knew what kind of view we're dealing with. A few drinks after the meal to pass the time up until sunset is fitting for this location. La Sirenetta is definitely not just a tourist trap, it's a Landmark not to be missed here in Coron.
