If I could rate this place a ZERO, I would ... I aqaordered the ham and cheese sandwich, which was supposed to have lettuce and swiss cheese... it had ham and mayo only. It was like $15! The fries was $6 and barely covered the bottom of the container, and were overdone, quite brown. I mentioned these things to the attendant and he said the sandwich came from the company that way, and that is the portion size... any issue I had, he had no apology, but some excuse... thefood was terrible!! Bread stale, fries over done, he refused to heat my sandwich was damn near frozen. The attendant was pretty unprofessional ... I only suffered through this ordeal because the place was right next to my gate and boarding was in 15 mins. If I had time I would have just cut my losses and gone elsewhere.

Late afternoon at the airport, was running out of options for food as places were closing up (but why?). Thankfully this outpost was still open and did not have a long line either. Unfortunately the grill was down for the day (why), so they only really had fries, poutine, or the smoked meat sandwich. Settled on the Poutine ($14) - a giant bowl of fresh fries, gravy, curds, and chopped meat. Fries are cooked well and the meat had flavor; gravy and curds weren't as fresh (though it is airline food). Glad this place decided to stay open, since there wasn't much else around on a Sunday. Hopefully get to visit their actual location at some point.

    Smoked Meat Sandwich - $11.95

For those that miss out on Schwartz, Lester's Deli Express is an airport option that offers an opportunity to try both the Montreal dishes of smoked meat sandwich or poutine. Be warned though, this is an airport location and Lester's is nowhere as near an institution as Schwartz and there's a reason why. My order: Smoked Meat Sandwich - $11.95. I opted for the sandwich only and added a deli pickle and it was close to the meal price that included both the pickle and French fries. While 7 ounces of meat is served and the presentation is similar to Schwartz (overfilled sandwich with small pieces of rye bread) the truth is in the meat quality. While Schwartz was a heavenly mix of Pastrami and beefy smoked meat, Lester's deli tasted like a cross between smoked meat and low grade baloney. If you don't have time to go to the real thing, this is (sadly) one of Montreal Airport's passable eateries but don't expect a divine experience. Lester's accepts credit cards including Amex.

I should have stayed away from this, I didn't think it would be that big. About the size of 3 extra large orders of fries, covered with a cup of smoked meat, a cup of mozzarella, and a 2 cups of gravy. Good, but I always have to clean off my plate. The smoked meat and gravy was good, next time I will get the smoked meat sandwich without the fries (and gravy) $20.38 CAD. Yes I ate it all

Great smoked meat sandwich!…read more Honestly my first thought was to compare this sandwich to the many pastrami sandwiches I've had in NYC but that would be comparing apples to oranges. Even Schwartz will tell you it's not the same product although it is very similar. Both institutions cure, spice, smoke and steam the meat but that's where the similarities end. Although I don't know for sure, I've heard the cut of meat is different. Katz uses a naval cut, which is noticeably fattier and juicy. Schwartz's smoked meat doesn't lack in fattiness but it's far less fatty and juicy. Another fact on the first bite is -the flavor. Katz's flavor profile on the pastrami is a knockout punch while Schwartz delivers a jab. Schwartz's smoked meat delivers a different flavor profile all together. That's not to say Schwartz isn't great because it's half the price on Katz essentially and you don't have to tip your slicer here. That's not to say Schwartz doesn't bring their own brand of chaos. On my way out the slicer shouted he'd serve no one until the line was straightened out to his liking. LOL. It's all good though, that line was a mess and Sometimes tourists need a stern talking to. I'd get in a straight line for sure for this sandwich! I got my sandwich from the takeout next door versus waiting for table service. The line was 20 deep at 3pm and I just didn't have the patience on a drizzling afternoon. I'd revisit for another one of these smoked meat sandwiches.

Their smoked meat sandwich is next level. And while I only had a few places of comparison in Montreal, it was bar none the best smoked meat in Montreal. I dare say they are the Katz's of Montreal. I gotta say, it was a bit of a trek to get here. My wife dropped me off and drove around while I went to get my order. Let me just say, going at 10pm on a Monday night probably played in my favor. Still being that late on a Monday in March, this place was still busy. I could have gotten a table if I was dining in, but that was not my plan. I ran in to grab some take out, and I have to say, in the time it took me to turn around and pay for my sandwich, my sandwich was all ready to go. The anticipation built as we drove back to hotel with my smoked meat sandwich. When I opened it up, I can't say I was overwhelmed by the size of it, but after that first bite, I was hooked. This was the best bite I had on my whole trip, and I am now cursing myself for only getting one sandwich. We almost went back the next morning, but we had to be on the road, so alas, this one sandwich was all we got. OVERALL - if you don't go, it is truly your loss. I would probably try the poutine with the smoked meats on a return trip, to get the full, Montreal experience. CELEBRITY RATING - Ryan Gosling

Same kind of setup when you walk in: order at the counter, grab a seat, and they bring your food over. Super easy. Prices are pretty standard for smoked meat sandwiches around $13, and for two of us it came to about $50 (everything is mostly à la carte unless you go for a trio, similar to Pete's). The vibe is great fun decor, loads of Marilyn Monroe, and the staff were really nice and welcoming. Food-wise, everything hit the spot overall and I'd definitely go back. Only thing for me was the poutine -- I wasn't fully sold on the cheese they use. Also noticed the coleslaw portion was a bit small (and I've seen others mention that too). Still, solid West Island spot if you're craving smoked meat and want to switch it up from the usual places.

You cn settle for low budget diners and have-all restaurants that go cheap and offer Lesters which tastes, feels, and looks like it was injected with formaldehyde or you can experience smoked meat the way it was supposed to be. Montreal offers no shortage of classic smoked meat joints. Delibees is one that really stands out. Leave Schwartzs for the tourists. If you want insanely good meat that doesnt require you to wait an hour in line around the block, then check out this hidden diamond in the rough in the Valois Village in Pointe Claire. This place has two locations connected each other: a dingy dive bar (not the good kind) and the diner side. Food is the same but youre better off entering the deli. This meat is unbelievable: juicy, tender, and full of flavour. Ive yet to have a bad experience at this place. While another unnamed west island smoked meat hub has gotten progressively more expensive over the years with a slight downtrend in quality to accompany it, Delibees has managed to hold its own. Every Montrealer, especially west islanders, owe it to themselves to try this place out.

Arguably, the most famous smoked meat spot in the city is Schwartz's - and indeed when we were walking past it there was a huge line of people waiting to get in. Smoked meat wasn't on the top of my list, as I could easily go to a Jewish Deli in NYC - but we were on a food tour and this was one of the stops. That being said, I was looking forward to checking out the meats. Lester's is located in Outremont, which is also the home to Montreal's Hasidic Jewish community. The place gave off old school vibes - walking in we were greeted by the deli counter with tables scattered throughout the dining room. The decor was charming and casual with touches of kitsch on the walls without being tacky. There is a good variety of classic deli dishes, though we went classic and got the smoked meat with rye, pickles, and mustard. There was enough for each of us to make one sandwich, so that's what we did. This was honestly better than I expected - the meat was juicy and tender, the bread was soft yet was able to withstand being part of a sandwich, and the pickles were super flavorful. Special shoutout to the mustard - we were told they make their own which I felt was a really special touch. Service was good, and overall this was an unexpected highlight of my food tour. Jewish deli food is not something I usually gravitate towards, but this was some of the best I've had - it's well worth making a trip here.

Fastest service ever!…read more I think they were in a hurry to close LOL. I ordered 2 Wilensky specials, one with cheddar and the other with swiss. Literally between the time I handed over my money and the cashier turned around to make change from the register behind her, my order was ready and bagged in front of me before I got my change back. I had nothing else to do but walk out and find a place to eat. I was literally in the store for less than 2 minutes! Now the Wilensky is salami, bologna, and your choice of cheese on a roll (that reminds me of an english muffin) with yellow mustard. Simple but absolutely delicious! I've had bologna sandwiches before but never thought to add salami which adds a little spice. That bun was super pillowy and just eased right on down after taking a bite. I generally hate yellow mustard but this wasn't overbearing smear. Each Wilensky was like $5 each and incredibly satisfying. The first steps through the door, it was as if I time travelled directly to 1930s, old weird looking slender poles with round wooden seats, wood cabinetry, and short countertops. There's also another sign to say no tipping and any money leftover after settling the bill goes to charity, how wonderfully generous that is. Regarding the promptness of my food, I did show up 10 minutes before closing and the prompt service was expected as everyone has places to be and places to go after work. I totally enjoyed the no nonsense effort.
