Smoke sand which

This was our first lunch stop as soon as we got to Quebec. We came here for the smoke sandwiches and poutines. The sandwich itself was okay, the meat is tender but it there wasn't much flavours to it. It was missing some salt or something. The poutine was pretty good. But we find it odd that the potatoes had a stevia after taste. Not sure if that's usual. The service was pretty quick once we ordered our food. But the line to the counter can be quite long. We waited about 30 minutes before we made our order. The place itself is like a retro place. It has a good amount of seating inside and outside.

01/24/25 Smoke Meat Pete's is good company, great eats, and has an amazing atmosphere (it is a no BS place)! It's not a fancy restaurant, but has amazing food! The poutine was phenomenal, the spaghetti was amazing and the spoke meat was TO DIE FOR!! One thing to note is when their are live performances, it gets really loud so I wouldn't recommend going to Smoke Meat Pete's after 7pm with young children. Another thing to note is that there is no direct table service, so to order food you have to go to the ordering counter. Food: 5 | Service: 5 | Atmosphere: 5

Pete's platter! smoked meat Sammy, fries pickles and coleslaw

Yum yum yum yum GOOD FOOD. Best gravy I've ever had! Busy restaurant, can be intimidating when you first walk in (maybe that's just me though lol) but the food quality is SO worth it!

If you're travelling from Montreal towards Ontario on the 20 and are feeling at all peckish, stop in at Smoke Meat Pete. The smoked meat sandwiches are very good and for us, is easier to get to than Schwartz's and easier for parking as well. It is indeed a casual restaurant where you order at a window, pay, collect your drinks and go off to find a table. There's Blues playing on the audio system and a stage for a live band. Of course at 2PM on a Wednesday there's no live entertainment. The staffer taking our order was patient, friendly, and even offered to help carry some of our drinks to our table. Food arrived quickly and clearly it all had just been prepared. The smoked meat was hot and very tasty. The fries out of the fryer are dark but clearly started as fresh cut. They really tasted of potatoes and that seem rare in these time when just about everyone seems to use factory made frozen. Pickle slices and coleslaw accompany the combo special in addition to a sandwich and a fountain drink. We ordered a vac packed full piece to bring home with us. Smoke Meat Pete's was a welcome stop on the way back to Toronto from Quebec City. However, next time I'm ignoring Waze and going around the city rather than crossing at the Champlain bridge and having to inch along the 20. bon apetit

As soon as you enter, you stand in line to place your order. It's not a long wait.

If you're not a native Montrealer, you have to try smoked meat while you're in town! There are several places to have smoked meat in and around Montreal but Smoke Meat Pete's is definitely one of the more popular spots (and for good reason). Service is incredibly fast and (mostly) pleasant. It's a busy place so I wouldn't want to be too hard on the servers. I've had the smoked meat several times before and it's always amazing. My most recent experience involved me trying something new- a smoke meat pasta (it's DELICIOUS). Depending on how many people are dining, be prepared to spend a pretty penny. Just keep in mind how they pile each sandwich a mile-high with meat, and portion sizes of non-smoke meat dish are also quite large. Overall, it's a great spot for a "vacation" dinner or for grabbing a bite with friends.

Can't beat Pete's meat

I grew up in the 1980s in Montreal. Smoked Meat sandwiches are an institution. Hallowed places like Schwartz still operate but many have closed. Don't fear. The traditional Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich is still available as authentic as ever at Smoke Meat Pete's. Stop by on your way to Montreal from Ontario. This is a must try. Go on a Friday night for smoked meat and live blues. Totally Montreal experience. Can't beat Pete's meat!!!

Smoke Meat Pete was the perfect place to highlight this milestone. A relaxed, casual, cafeteria style deli, serving wonderful, lean and juicy, thick cut slices of smoked meat that were among some of the best we've had and with Pete's (Varvaro) historic background that's no surprise at all. But, that's not all the île-Perrot institution is great at. A poutine worthy of the name, some truly mouth-watering sides and delicious ribs are just more reasons to revisit. They also have a very interesting house beer : "Pete's Kick-Ass Brew" which is just that. The live blues bands complete the lively, fun atmosphere and spectucular, freindly, quick service with the kitchen busting out orders at an almost impossibly fast rate, add to an already marvellous time. This dying breed of restaurant experience is a must try and definitely worth the drive out to L'île-Perrot. You can't beat Pete's meat! (we need to go back and buy that shirt... They ran out )

Pete's Special

If you're driving in from Toronto or driving to Toronto, consider stopping by Smoke Meat Pete to grab a quick bite. It's a busy lunchtime spot, but the tables turn quick so it wasn't a long wait, plus they offered samples when in line. Pete's Special comes with a smoked meat sandwich, fries and a fountain drink. The spices in the smoked meat really come through, but it's still too salty for my taste. The sandwich is a big one and fresh fries were really good too.

Oh my goodness, this place is amazing!!! Apparently, their smoked meat is better than Schwartz's (now that's a high bar) so I was on board to test that claim. It's a rustic little place that attracts bikers and local folks alike. It's located right behind one of the original Dairy Queens and their sign is easy to see at night (see photo below). When you walk in, you'll be in a vestibule area that was created during COVID for take-out, but is now an overflow space when the restaurant gets full or the live music gets too loud. Once you go into the restaurant itself you stand in line to order and pay. They even have Spruce Beer!!!! Big selling point for us native Montrealers. I ordered their Smoked Meat Spaghetti and was not disappointed. They put lots of smoked meat in the sauce and there was enough to have for lunch the next day. My nephew and his wife had the basic smoked meat sandwich and fries - all of which was gobbled up in no time. Their fries are pretty darn good, too.

(Visited 12/9/2019.) So smoked meat is a HUGE thing here in Montréal. Schwartz's is the big name downtown, but what about other competition? Especially since Schwartz's is cash-only, I HATE cash-only places. I looked up some more places that are known for their smoked meat and I found this place. It was about a 25 minute drive out of downtown to get here, but it was totally worth it and here's why. Atmosphere/Appearance: Away from the city life seems to slow down just a bit. This place is a stand-alone restaurant with it's own private parking lot and looks like a big ol' house. It speaks to the kind of family-like experience you're going to have here. Once up the wooden steps you walk in and are greeted by the ordering counter. The menus are up above for you to gaze at before placing your order. Once your order is placed you go sit down and your food is brought to you. Like I mentioned earlier, this place is like a big house. The dining room is basically a giant living room with tables all pointing toward the stage. Yes, stage and there was a live music performance today! They have live music every Monday. That's awesome. Service: There isn't much service since you go place your order then go sit down, but everyone was very nice and I had everything I needed. Food: So I went with the "Jumbo Special" which comes with the sandwich of course, a pickle spear, coleslaw and mashed potatoes. Well, you get to choose other sides, but I chose those. Lol. Everything was very, very good and certainly worth the drive out here. Value: (All prices in $CAD.) The Jumbo Special was only $18.85 and that's a great deal for all of the food that you get for sure. In conclusion, if you're looking to not spend cash, dine in a much larger establishment, not be rushed out after eating, see live music, not hunt for a parking spot AND just feel more at home... eat here. Lol.

Great smoked meat sandwich!…read more Honestly my first thought was to compare this sandwich to the many pastrami sandwiches I've had in NYC but that would be comparing apples to oranges. Even Schwartz will tell you it's not the same product although it is very similar. Both institutions cure, spice, smoke and steam the meat but that's where the similarities end. Although I don't know for sure, I've heard the cut of meat is different. Katz uses a naval cut, which is noticeably fattier and juicy. Schwartz's smoked meat doesn't lack in fattiness but it's far less fatty and juicy. Another fact on the first bite is -the flavor. Katz's flavor profile on the pastrami is a knockout punch while Schwartz delivers a jab. Schwartz's smoked meat delivers a different flavor profile all together. That's not to say Schwartz isn't great because it's half the price on Katz essentially and you don't have to tip your slicer here. That's not to say Schwartz doesn't bring their own brand of chaos. On my way out the slicer shouted he'd serve no one until the line was straightened out to his liking. LOL. It's all good though, that line was a mess and Sometimes tourists need a stern talking to. I'd get in a straight line for sure for this sandwich! I got my sandwich from the takeout next door versus waiting for table service. The line was 20 deep at 3pm and I just didn't have the patience on a drizzling afternoon. I'd revisit for another one of these smoked meat sandwiches.

Schwartz is a small deli with a lot of history, and I love places like this where you can sit right…read moreat the counter. The service there was great, and it had that classic old-school deli atmosphere. I hadn't had a pastrami sandwich in a while, and while this one was very good, I wouldn't personally call it great. I found the meat a little dry, but adding coleslaw and a pickle definitely helped. I also tried their classic black cherry soda, which was excellent. If I'm comparing it to places like Langer's or Katz's, I'd probably rank Schwartz below both of them. I think Katz has better pastrami with more fat and a juicier texture overall, and Langer's #19 is still my favorite deli sandwich because you're getting more ingredients and flavors than just pastrami and mustard. Overall though, Schwartz is definitely worth checking out. You probably won't be blown away, but it's still a really solid experience with a lot of character.
