I know better now than I did back when we saw Dr. Sommers in the early 2ks. I was looking up to see if he was dead yet, but since he's not, I would like to offer this warning: This egotistical, arrogant, ignorant, man made things much worse for us. We told him our situations: I was working minimum wage, part time. My {husband} then boyfriend has a corporate job full time. He suggested we split the cost of the uncovered 'therapy'. His approach to therapy was basically to take our money and then sit us in a room to watch 70's soft core porn, episodes of him doing a spot on Geraldo Rivera (possibly from the 80's) and to meditate. He also suggested we do 'dates' where we lightly massage one another for 10 minutes each. And to get 'spicy' we could use a feather. When I complained about the treatment he was providing and that it wasn't helping, he called me a ball buster. He also told us stories of all the people he had helped, including an 'immigrant' couple he worked with couples who didn't understand that the penis goes in the vagina and he had to explain. (I'm serious) When I asked him if he could at least find some porn with women that weren't skinny, as I am larger: he said, and I'm not kidding here at all, "It's well known that men are attracted to thin women: have you tried to lose weight? Maybe this is his problem." Avoid this medical menace at all costs.

She is not above intimidating her patients, telling them repeatedly that she is "very angry" with them, and generally bullying them by speaking over them, louder and louder, until the poor patient capitulates, is her modus operendi. I would run the other way if offered an appointment with this psychiatrist. I began to dread days when I had an appointment with her. I came to believe that if she were the last therapist of any stripe in the universe, that I'd be better off talking to a soup can. In fact, my mood brightened as soon as I saw the last of her.

For years I have underachieved scholastically and professionally due to ADD. While I have always been intelligent and flexible, I have always been dogged by distractability - making it difficult for me to complete tasks and manage my time effectively. Although my natural talents have allowed me to be relatively successful in my field, I have always known that I could be so much better if I could get control of my focus. After several weeks of seeing Dr. Hoffer, I noted substantially increased focus, with the ability to sit down for several hours at a stretch working on one project, which is something that I have never been able to do before. Dr. Hoffer *is* pharmaceutically focused, so if you believe that psycho-pharmacological drugs are inherently "bad" - he may not be the doctor for you. However, I can report that under his care, I have been able to significantly increase my focus and productivity, which is positively affecting my life. I have no reason to argue with success. I would highly recommend Dr. Hoffer for people who suffer from ADD.

This man is an awful and dangerous doctor. He has been reprimanded by the Ontario College of…read morePhysicians and Surgeons and has more hearings with the College this Fall. In my case he misdiagnosed me as having ADHD and his stimulant medications worsened my actual condition. I was admitted to the hospital and told by 3 different doctors that I do not have ADHD. Hoffer has severe conditions imposed on his licence by the College and will likely have more when I report him soon.
