Do I dare post a review of this seemingly locals-only joint well-protected from Yelping tourists in…read morethe mountains above Evian...
I was brought to Le Relais de la Chevrette by locals, family actually, and if it were not for them, I would not have endured the snowy night and the small roads to come to what was promised to be "the best fondue of my life." But the reservation was made days in advance, and I'm a sucker for anyone making the mention of cheese and/or wine, so snow we endured and drive we did. And man-oh-man was it worth it!
Raclette, fondue, and meats - seared table-side - as far as the eye can see and nose can smell. Oh yeah, you will be smelling of cheese when you leave this place - hair, sweaters, everything. This isn't the type of place you come if you want to be keeping appearances on a date. I mean, you're shoveling piles of molten cheese into your mouth as quickly as you can spear a cube of bread.
Aside from the cheese and the meat (and the more cheese), the service is great - friendly, attentive (shout out to my NYC friend who overheard my American accent across the sea of native Frenchmen), and ambiance is as you would expect in an overcrowded, overheated alpine cheese hall (I mean that in the most lovingly way possible).
