I'm hooked. And it only took a single weeknight visit to this small family-run restaurant…read more Don Raffas is unassuming from the outside, with pretty much a bright and plain interior. It's comfy and clean like the living room that my grandmother never allowed kids in, and my guess is everyone there is family. Service here is prompt and friendly with attention to detail. The food though ... delicioso! First, the salsa passes every test in my funky salsa rule book. It's a cilantro-laced medium-thin ruby red bowl of spicy deliciousness that's served cold. (I'm sure they'd warm it if that's your thing.) This place also has some serious queso action, and I'm pretty sure that it was mixed with chiles, onions, and cilantro -- then warmed through and brought to the table. The warm crispy tortilla chips served as the perfect vessels for inhaling both of these wonderful sauces. As is usually the case, I ordered a bean, lettuce, and cheese tostada to go with my meal. Topped with the wonderful salsa, it was very satisfying. Perhaps I'll ask for a few avocado slices during a future visit. If you've read any of my Tex-Mex restaurant reviews, you know that my inaugural visit usually includes tamales or cheese enchiladas, or both. I opted for the tamale dinner this go-around and was pleased. If you're old school and remember El Chico or Monterrey House, this dinner reminded me so much of their versions. Institutional, but in a good way, with firm masa and moist filling (not sure whether it was beef or pork). The rice and refried beans were fairly standard but good. My wife ordered the chicken and beef fajitas with corn tortillas instead of the traditional flour. (The corn tortillas are homemade.) I took a nibble and gave a thumbs up. She, on the other hand, gave two thumbs up and made sure to get a to-go box for leftovers. -- It's worthy of mention that this place offers plenty of authentic Mexican dishes, including homemade menudo. Don Raffas is hardly the neon-busy Tex-Mex joint that you might find in a mall parking lot or along a busy freeway. They don't wear uniforms, and the TV was on a Spanish-language channel the whole time we were there. The service and food are legit ... genuine. And the prices aren't reflective of a restaurant that's paying a band or five years of payments to a palapas company. It's simply a local joint with delicious food, cold beer, and wonderful service. If you like eating local, you'll love Don Raffas. I know we do.

Didn't expect to find some of the best crawfish at a Mexican restaurant, but here we are…read more Perfectly seasoned, spicy with just the right kick, and soaked in flavor down to the last bite. The crawfish were fresh, juicy, and easy to peel (which matters if you know, you know). Whatever blend of spices they're using--keep doing that! And somehow it gets even better paired with a cold margarita and chips & salsa on the side. The mix of bold Cajun flavor with a laid-back Mexican restaurant vibe just works. Service was great, Lucia was our server, we sat on the bar patio and the atmosphere was a vibe Our food came out quick and hot! Definitely one of those hidden gem spots you don't expect but end up craving later. 10/10... would absolutely go back for another round

It has always been our go-to spot for great food and excellent service, so naturally, we chose it again to celebrate a special evening with our daughter. Unfortunately, this visit didn't live up to the experiences we've had in the past. From the moment we arrived, our waitress seemed disengaged and not very attentive. When we asked if our daughter's drink could be made a little special--with a cherry and a fun glass--it felt like an inconvenience rather than a simple request. The food was still delicious, which we appreciate, but we've noticed portions have gradually become smaller over the years while prices continue to rise. More disappointing, though, was the service, which fell short of what we've come to expect from a place that has meant so much to us. It's genuinely sad to see what feels like a slow decline in one of our longtime favorite spots.

**This is a 3.5 star review, which means I really liked the joint.**…read more I've been seeing this restaurant for more than six years since it sits right across a side street from a pizza place that we frequent. It's divey, and there wasn't much to entice my patronage until a recent conversation on social media. So, my wife and I went there on a Saturday for lunch. Though the restaurant is spic and span, it definitely served as someone's home at some point. Still, there is plenty of dining area with the typical restaurant accoutrements. The restrooms, albeit dated, are clean; the soap and paper towels are plenty. Service here? Outstanding. Our server was a young man who was talking to an older lady behind the bar at the time of our arrival. As we placed our order, she slipped away to the kitchen. This is definitely a mom & pop operation. The salsa here is served cold, and that's a wonderful thing. Ours was a bit on the spicy side ... laden with onion and cilantro. It was wonderful. The complimentary chips weren't hot, but they were thin and crispy (and we emptied our basket very quickly). My wife tends to order a la carte, and the chicken flautas appealed to her most during this visit. They were crispy and tender. Well seasoned. Excellent. As with any Tex-Mex or Mex joint, I tend to start out with the variety platter. I was disappointed that none on the menu offered me options of cheese enchiladas, but I grew up on the beef version, so it wasn't a big deal. First, the beef enchilada here is really good. Al dente corn tortilla and nicely seasoned ground beef. The tamale was run-of-the-mill and something that I probably wouldn't order again here, despite that I'm a tamale junkie. The retried beans were fine ... rice was a little to soft for my tongue, but the flavor is outstanding. Anthony's take credit cards and they offer soft drinks (in bottles), beer and wine. I could tell that they take pride in what they do, and I'm a fan.
