Last spring, he got extremely ill and tested positive for a fatal retrovirus. We thought he was a goner. The conventional vets pretty much gave up on him and told me to consider euthanasia. Finley bounced back after we put the prednisone in the trash bin and instead gave him some Acemannan "inner leaf" aloe and CBD oil from Pet Releaf. He started seeing Dr. Matthews after this (early last spring). She tested all of his food, and medicines to make sure they agree with him. She recommended a limited raw food diet, continuing with the aloe and CBD, as well as monthly acupuncture treatments. Dr. Matthews has a way of communicating with the animal, understanding their backstory and knowing what they need. It seems a little hocus pocus but you can clearly see the animal responding. She was also trained as a conventional vet. She has a lovely side-kick named Dee Dee, who does Reiki and just loves up the animals during their procedures. Dee Dee gives Finley "cookies" and places a scarf over his head so he feels secure, (and looks like a baby babushka). Finley does get very stressed from the travel so Dee Dee's relaxing and loving energy has been especially helpful. The office also provides 'acupuncture' treatments over telehealth. Don't ask me how this works, but it DOES. Since Finley started as a patient, he has been acting happy and healthy, getting into lots of mischief, "helping" around the house, and posting his latest thots to Instagram. He does have a bit of a "herx" reaction which lasts about 2-3 days after each appointment, but I assume this is a good sign.

That gives some depth and maturity to the practice as a whole. I like having the option to be seen at one of the other nearby locations if necessary in a minor emergency. The problem with my old vet is that the practice is overbooked and is now limited to only wellness care. I attended a pre-opening open house for Longmeadow Vet Clinic and was impressed that the office is well equipped and is not limited to only having simple exam rooms. My transfer to Longmeadow Vet Clinic was well rewarded recently when my elderly dog suddenly developed drooping in one eye, together with a retracted eyeball. His eye looked truly awful. My first concern was that one of the two cats I had adopted a month earlier had gone for his eye. Oddly though, my dog wasn't in any pain. I was able to book an appointment with Dr. Jost for the very next morning. Readers from this area will know what it's like to wait in the local pet emergency room for 24 hours, so I was already very favorably impressed. Dr. Jost gave my dog an extremely thorough examination that was entirely on par with what I would expect from a good human ophthalmologist. Ironically, I would not have received as good care, as promptly, and for so low a cost from my own general practitioners at Trinity Health. I will mention here that I'm a retired attorney who attended the first two years of medical school before changing to law. I had consistently performed at the center of the bell curve, but just didn't like medicine. So, I'm often critical of physicians and other health care providers, but not here. We have a terrible shortage of good general practitioners here in western/central Massachusetts. Maybe veterinarians should be allowed to treat humans.

Came here and my dog was properly diagnosed in less than an hour with the proper medications needed and tests completed. I feel very comfortable with my dog here, as we are both not of the norm (I'm covered in tats, he's a pit bull) so to walk into a place feeling welcomed and treated fairly, is rare for us. When I brought my newly adopted dachshunds to the vet I was nervous because they live up to the doxie guard dog trait--they bark at strangers. Especially my older one--he's 8 and is especially cautious around men. They barked in the waiting room, at the admin, etc. but when Dr. Tulman came in to see us--he was silent. I was amazed (and relieved). My Brownie--who sometimes forgets who my husband is, loved Dr. Tulman right away. He gave them their shots and they didn't flinch, the whole appointment went off without a hitch. As a first time dog-mom I felt very reassured about bringing my dogs to the vet.
