I've been following these guys on FB and IG for a while. I have also heard good testimonials from…read moreothers who have taken courses with OpTempo so of course my curious self went through their website to see if there were any classes that worked with my schedule. I took an Intermediate Pistol Course earlier this month with Matt and Ben leading the class -- both were phenomenal instructors. Each instructor had their own philosophy and methodology with handling and tactics. I appreciate that they also brought their "real world" experiences into our group discussions. Since the instructors have LE and Military backgrounds, better perspectives and examples are shared with the class which is an added bonus for those who are learning new concepts or strategies. The course I took was at Field Sports Park on the border of South San Jose and Morgan Hill. We had a private section of the park which worked nicely for our intimate class size of 10. The class started at 9am and ran a little bit past 3pm. We completed drills as a class and did some additional work in smaller group sizes of 1:5. I enjoyed the session so much that I signed up for 1:1 instruction for a new weapon I just purchased. Signing up is easy. Just browse through the course offerings on the website, select and pay for the course you want to take (check for prerequisites), and Adriana (I believe she's the Operations Manager) will respond to you promptly with all the details you need. By the way, Adriana has been an absolute pleasure to work with -- she's responsive and really great with answering questions. Overall, there's a pretty awesome team running this business. I would highly recommend for beginner shooters, skilled shooters, expert shooters, and every skill level in between!

His expertise, patience, and ability to adjust training for individual skill levels made the experience exceptional. The supportive and inclusive learning environment he created was invaluable. I highly recommend OpTempo and look forward to more courses. Thank you, Ben, and the entire team!

I've been patronizing this range for YEARS and I hope it never closes down. We are desperately in…read moreneed of ranges here in the Bay Area & in the last number of years many have closed (RIP: TargetMasters, Lake Chabot Range and Guns, Fishing & other stuff). That said, they have various ranges to shoot clay pigeons, on the lower area of the range. On the upper range they have a rifle / pistol range. They do offer memberships, which of course affords you cheaper range dues. I believe regular range dues are $30 and for military (active duty / reserve / guard) it is $15 The outdoor rifle range goes to 100 yards max, with mounts for your target every 25 yards out to 100. Each shooting bench has a spotting scope, where you can zoom into your target to track progress. They ONLY allow shooting from the seated position on this part of the range; no off hand or prone shooting allowed. The courses of fire are about 24mins; with clearly defined & painfully obvious cease-fire periods. NO rapid fire is allowed, so don't expect to come here & be able to mag dump. There is a pistol range area to the left of where I fire my rifles. They very much scrutinize safety, so LISTEN to the Range Safety Officers. Stand BEHIND the red line during cease fire periods. It's almost to the point of being FUDDs, but I cannot / will not throw shade at them for running a disciplined, safe, orderly range. The ONLY issue I ever had there - I showed a lady (white lady, in her late 30s - early 40s) my military ID. She says "The discount is for ACTIVE duty only". (That's incorrect the entire 20+yrs I was in the reserves, they always honored the military pricing). So I had to edify for her that I am *actively* serving in the reserves. 100% of businesses that I patronize that offer "military rates" don't stop and say "Wait, you're a reservist - that's not military enough" Service is service, full stop. Once I verified / explained things, then she honored the pricing in question. That was a one-time issue and it totally was NOT malicious, I think it was more of a knowledge/training issue. Anyhow, it's a good range - Great way to decompress, clear your head, focus upon what you're doing. A day at the range, working on the fundamentals of marksmanship & safe hunting rifle / shotgun use is ALWAYS a win in my book!! Come spend the day out there with me, I assure your it's a grand ole time!!

Recently went here with my wife hoping to introduce her to firearms for the first time…read more Unfortunately, it ended up being a pretty awful experience. At the range, one of the range officers on duty decided to use our rather expensive range time ($30 an hour/person) to give my wife an unsolicited lesson in how to handle a gun. For context, prior to going, I went through the trouble of prepping my wife for the range, teaching her how to handle the gun safely via dry fire practice. I tried communicating this to the range officer, but he insisted on giving my wife the lesson anyway. He spent half of our shooting session giving her an awkward, overly hands-on, borderline physically intrusive, lesson, getting closer than necessary. By the time he was finished, we would only be able to shoot a few rounds before the next cease fire was announced. The range master himself that day would make pretty belittling comments to me, often insisting I should do things a certain way that I felt were closer to arbitrary preferences than actual objective rules. For example, he told me I should move my target up to the 7 yard line (it was originally at the 10 yard line) because my groups weren't as tight as he thought they should be. All in all, we had a pretty terrible experience with this place and will almost certainly not be coming back.

A lot of the emphasis is on body movement and awareness. That means a lot of tumbling and agility exercises mixed in with self defense and karate. There's usually a competition for each session. The variety of the competitions - sumo, rope swing, dodgeball, freeze, belt grab, etc - is an example of how well rounded the entire program is. One of the truly great things about Elite is that kids are taught to instruct other kids. Every kid that stays long enough eventually becomes a sensei. Our six year old son started teaching about six months in. We love this! What better way to teach kids leadership, confidence, respect, social skills and more. All of this is to the credit of the great sensei that runs Elite. Sensei John is calm, upbeat, unflappable and definitely one of a kind. He talks to children with enthusiasm and treats them like more than "just a kid". As such, he gets the attention of his students without a loud voice or strong commands. The kids all want to do well for him and for themselves. It should be noted that if you're looking for a tough, strict and very regimented karate environment, this might not be the place for you. Your child will learn a lot at Elite but it's not going to be through military-style training you see at other schools. I could go on and on and on. Our son loves this place. We have the highest amount of respect for Sensei John. You must check it out for yourself!
