My husband scheduled a handgun safety class for us and our two daughters for our family date. Prior to the class the idea of handling a gun or even owning one made me (and our girls) very nervous. However after the class we all felt 10 times more comfortable. The instructor was very engaging, knowledgeable, and his assistant ;) was very helpful and friendly. Although we had another student in our class they both were very attentive and ensured that they answered all of our questions. My daughter and I participated in the firearms training class. Antoine was/is very engaging and very knowledgeable. He provided a back story on his experience as a safety officer as well as some very enlightening stories he has had. Very professional. We all took our safety test (we all passed) He provided the class with a variety of hand guns(unloaded) and we were able to handle and get a feel for them. Antoine explained in detail the proper way to handle a firearm as well as explaining about each firearm we held. Due to the pandemic we were not able to go to a live range BUT we did some "dry firing" and used an interactive program that had a variety of targets options. VERY FUN! I was honestly rather nervous to take this class because I had never so much as seen a real gun (apart from on the belts of police officers) let alone held one, but figured it is always good to be prepared. No more than 30 seconds into the class, I was instantly at ease and felt that I was in the best and most professional training program imaginable. The classroom portion of the class is informative (real life anecdotes of Antoine's time with the Oakland PD/relevant cases from SJ forces, etc.) and general gun safety. At one point Antoine explained a case where someone was breaking into a house - had broken through all but the chain in the door, and pretend you're inside with your gun.Antoine is on the other side of the door pretending to break in. (And he's a BIG dude.) 'When do you shoot? Do you shoot now?' Then Antoine pretends to break through the chain and walk towards us. "Do you shoot now?" The class and I are all, "Um, no. Um, Can I shoot you in the leg?" Needless to say, it quickly put us in the setting of how confusing and scary it must to have to make a decision like that in the real world. We learned in CA, someone must be approaching you with the intent to do grave bodily harm even after they've broken into your home, before you can legally shoot a gun in self defense. Then Antoine takes out the guns (lets you peek inside to make sure they are empty for yourself) and slowly introduces you to holding, preparing a gun for loading, loading, aiming, firing, and discharging the magazine. Then you're off to the range, which is a bit like Cheers as Antoine greets everyone (by now you're thoroughly 110% positive he's a great, great guy) and you put on your ear/eye protection, and he teaches you how to load a magazine with bullets (naive me assumed magazines all came loaded like that you just popped them in :)) and then he stands behind you while you shoot at targets at 30, 15, and 10 feet. I left feeling as though if I ever needed to unload a gun to make a situation safe, or God forbid shoot one to protect my loved ones, I was in a much more prepared place. I grew up in small town NW Iowa and a hunting culture, most pheasants and ducks. The local Isaak Walton League and Ducks Unlimited continue to be popular and I still enjoy keeping up with many of my home town friends that way in the Fall. However, I have never joined them on the hunt, as my Mom's directive of no guns or motorcycles continues to be a strong influence on me. It's safe to say that gun safety an politics have "evolved" since my Hawkeye State days. As such, many of my friends have taken the word "infringed" literally to heart and pretty much ignored the "well regulated" part of the 2nd Amendment. Others like me would just like to make better sense of this latest round of "public execution" madness and chart a reasonable path forward. So why not take a Gun Safety Course and get that perspective? A recent Groupon from Fisher Executive Protection offered me a chance to take NRA First Steps Class. Taking and passing this class (including a few live rounds at the Range) is the baseline requirement for legally buying a handgun. Here are the positives: - Our instructor had the right law enforcement bonafides and street cred to make his points. Hence, the role plays, presentations, and questions were practical and sensible. - Gun Control politics were left at the door and I appreciated getting the details about California requirements vs. other parts of the Country, and where certain parts of the system sometimes come up short. - At the end of the Day, I was left with the impression that the Fisher course covered the right bases towards training an individual to be a responsible and law abiding hand gun owner. However.... I did not join my class at the Range. That is because I did not feel safe going any further. The Instructor's hands on method and style did not instill confidence that I could safely discharge a fire arm, even after repeated practice. And as soon as I confirmed that to myself, I left and didn't look back. Maybe on a different day with a different instructor, I would come to a different conclusion. And I wish that I too could write a stellar review similar to the others on this page. I'm certainly glad I made the effort and appreciate the quality product that Fisher Executive Protection offers. My wife and I signed up for the First Step program. The classroom portion of the class was very informative. Antoine, the instructor, played out scenarios to show us how the law works. This instilled knowledge of the laws in an easy to understand method, rather than just lecturing about what's legal and what's not. Before going to the range, he gave us hands on experience of safely handling, slide operation, loading/unloading, and aiming a variety of pistols. This instilled the confidence my wife and I needed to safely shoot at the range. Once we got to the indoor range, my wife got a little nervous due to all the loud gun shots. I'll admit it was a little intimidating. I've shot guns outdoors, but inside is super loud. Antoine was very sympathetic and allowed her time to adjust to the loud environment. He was extremely helpful with adjusting our stance and aided with my trigger finger positioning issues. By the end of the night my wife was smiling and shot better than I did. I've been to the shooting range a few times before to try a shotgun, a semi, and a revolver, but I've never been comfortable with any of them. After coming across a LS deal ($45 deal), my bf & I decided to take Antoine's class because (as much as I would like to stay ignorant), guns are everywhere and it's important to understand how to disarm one and handle one if there is a situation. I also became more inspired after reading 1Q84 and the Millenium series (Girl with Played with Fire). I would read one of those to get you pumped up! The class itself was 3 hours: We were primed with the handgun safety booklet before the class, and the class went over the safety protocols again in a video. We then learned how to break down, clean, and assemble a gun - the most interesting part of the class for me. &we learn the difference between how each gun feels, how to properly hold one, mistakes people commonly make, and gun 'locking' mechanisms. Once the class was over, it was a 15 min drive to the shooting range where we spent about 45 mins with a pistol and our target. This is not the kind of range where you can rent guns -the class provided the guns (which are the same ones you learned with). Parking and class times: Since this is in downtown Oakland where meters are everywhere, I would recommend doing it on a Sunday when parking is free. Also they only offer classes from 8am-12pm, and 2pm-6pm on Sat and Sun, but you need to rsvp about 2 weeks in advance since the timeslots fill up fast. read more

If you've ever imagined what it would be like to shoot a 9MM handgun without injuring yourself or someone else, then the Fisher Executive Protection course is for you! The founder of the training program, Antoine Fisher, is a retired Oakland Police officer so his knowledge, skills, and credibility make him a great teacher. The first class meeting took place in an office building in downtown Oakland, complete with student desks, whiteboard, and gun safety movies. Midway through the class, we took a required handgun safety test which was comprised of 30 questions. After successfully passing this test with flying colors, we moved on to the real reason everyone comes to this class...handling the guns! Antoine brought out a small suitcase of his personal guns (unloaded of course) and each person in the class gets to touch and feel each gun. Antoine goes over all the features of a typical gun including how to hold it, safety mechanisms, how to cock it, and then of course how to pull the trigger. After holding each gun, Antoine individually asks everyone which gun feels the best and then assigns that pistol to you. We get up and move to the next room to do some standing drills where he shows us the proper shooting stance including how our feet and arms should be positioned, how to load the magazines into the gun, and how to safely hold the gun. He then moves on to showing us how to aim at imaginary targets on the wall and then pull the trigger (these guns are unloaded of course). After Antoine feels confident the class has mastered the basic techniques, its time for some actual shooting practice. We all meet at a gun range in San Leandro and are given ear protection, eye protection, and a target (all included in the price of the class). We happened to go on a Tuesday which is apparently ladies night. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were more women shooting there than men. The place was packed and everyone looked to be having a great time. After having our shooting lane assigned to us, we carefully treaded over a sea of empty shell casings on the way to our lane. We each took turns on the shooting lane with Antoine right there with us, while the other class members safely watched from just behind the safety line. I was feeling nervous and excited about my turn to shoot. When it was my turn to shoot, Antoine was very helpful in telling me how to improve my shot and about telling me what I was doing wrong. Antoine is the perfect teacher. He is patient, funny, an overall great guy to be around, and most importantly knowledgeable about everything related to guns and gun safety. Back in school I was always picked last for basketball. But now I can shoot a zombie in the forehead left-handed at 25 yards. Keep that in mind when you're choosing your team for the zombie apocalypse. How would I know that? I took a zombie-themed handgun safety course, naturally. Personally, I do not believe in the right of an individual to own a handgun, regardless of the current Supreme Court's interpretation of a "well regulated militia." But I'm not going to march in the streets about it, or pry one from your cold, dead hand. I'm simply not going to buy one. But if the world does go to hell in a hand basket, be it Red Dawn, World War Z, or The Big One, handling a gun safely might be like the life skills they taught you in elementary school-patience, sharing, coughing into your elbow-but for the end of the world. The timing was perfect. I'd just finished watching season 2 of The Walking Dead, and as my friend Haleemon said, I ain't goin' out like that. I signed up through Zozi, a local adventure experiences site. The course, offered by Fisher Executive Protection, was taught by a super-mellow Gulf War veteran named Adrian. After about two hours of lecture, a ridiculously easy exam, and hands-on practice with an unloaded handgun, we hit the range. Adrian led the plain vanilla students through the commands we had all drilled: Starting Position! Ready Position! Set! Fire! They popped off 20 rounds and called it a day. But not us zombie killers. As the last bastion of the human race we had two commands: On "Surrender!" we faced our instructor with empty hands raised. On "Threat!" we put aside our differences as humans. Spinning downrange, we loaded the magazine into our semi-automatic pistol, dropped the slide, and stared down the sites at our zombie target. We gently squeezed the trigger, never slapping, making each shot count. We shot two-handed with both dominant and weak hands, and single-handed with each hand, because you never know what injuries you might sustain in Zombieland. Forty rounds in all with a Glock 19, and then the pièce de résistance: Two shotgun rounds. Upon firing, one young woman in my group screamed, "OH F**K!" which, technically, could have gotten us killed if another shooter had turned towards the noise, but it was excusable. The kick from the .50 caliber slug was... impressive. My response was a more Keanu Reeves-like "Whoa." The course was an illuminating experience, and made for an excellent opportunity to talk to my kids about handgun safety. Unlike in "Fido," that means if they see a gun, they stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult. Basically the same principles as when confronted by a flasher. It solidified my resolve not to have a gun in my house. That's simply too much deadly force, especially with kids around. I'm still scared to death of guns, which was part of the reason I wanted to take the course. It freaks me out standing behind a cop at Starbucks, knowing that he could kill me instantly with his service revolver, if he wanted to. Of course he doesn't want to, but a criminal might. Now in that situation maybe I'd see a muzzle and a hammer and a grip instead of a mysterious death-dealing relic, and maybe I'd maintain enough composure to survive. And if the undead come knocking? First of all, Antoine Fisher is a marketing genius, and I thank him for it. My husband signed us both up for the fun-sounding Zombie Apocalypse course. I've handled firearms, but not with any particular pleasure, so his course was just what I needed. It was a bargain to a comparable and unthemed (thus presumably duller) pistol & shotgun safety & handling and basic tactical practice course, which I probably would never have signed up for. We started in a modest classroom in downtown Oakland learning about California law, pistol safety, and proper handling, with a round of hands-on dry fire training. The other students ranged broadly in experience and age, and the instructor, Adrian, was supportive for all levels. Most of the students were there for handgun training course, and after they left to do some range practice with Adrian, Antoine Fisher came in to show us how to load and use a shotgun, and go over the timed tactical trial we were going to do. (After all, you'd better be able to shoot down those zombies both from near and far, fast, and even when you're down.) Then we went to the San Leandro Gun Range, where I did the best shooting I've ever done in my life. I put two shotgun slugs right into a zombie's head, which was very satisfying. During the timed trial, my gun (my own) kept jamming, and Antoine helped me clear it quickly. I didn't make my time, but I did learn how to clear a jam safely, which is another valuable skill. Finally, he loaned me his Glock to finish off the zombie, because my gun just wasn't working right. So we had a great time, and I'm much more comfortable handling guns than I was (and I shoot better, too, thanks!) Oh, and the training also helped break some bad habits I hadn't realized I'd had. I highly highly recommend the Zombie Apocalypse for a fun experience and/or date. Everything is provided, so you don't have to bring your own guns or ammo. The only reason I'm taking it down my one star is that the range masters at the San Leandro Gun Range don't make safety the priority it should be. To our horror, during the cease fire, as we were walking back up from the outdoor field range after hanging up our zombie targets, the one guy not in our group was totally ignoring the cease fire (i.e. put down your weapons, safe them, and stay a foot back) and was loading up his long gun while we were in the field of fire. OMFG! The range masters didn't even seem to notice until they called the cease fire over, and then only told him not to do that again over the intercom. Anyway, I hope Fisher Executive makes enough profit to build their own range, or brings their training course to the South Bay, where the range masters care about safety as much as they do, and where people also dislike zombies. read more

A good basic class for an intro to gun ownership. Was very helpful for my wife - helped her feel more comfortable. Did find some of the answers that were given to students questions were not totally up to date or accurate. But some of those details are always being revised by the DOJ and require constant monitoring. If a person is interested in more in-depth knowledge of ownership and legalities - take a CCP (concealed carry permit) class. A California CCP permit is basically not obtainable by a normal citizen - but there are local Utah and Florida CCP classes that will provide you with extensive knowledge and issue you permits usable in roughly 35 states. They are just not valid in CA. read more

My SO and I each bought the $95 Yelp deal for a $180 course (still available as of today) and highly recommend it for anyone who's thinking of buying a handgun and isn't already highly knowledgeable. (And video games don't count - I kick ass at blowing away zombies in House of the Dead, but I aint so accurate yet with a real handgun.) A couple of weeks ago, we took a four-hour class. The first part of the evening session, taught in classroom format by Antoine in downtown Oakland, provided effective basic safety information (and prepared us for the State of CA Handgun Safety Certificate test) and ran us through the basics of handling a pistol and magazine. (I was surprised that, out of nine students, seven were female.) The next part of the evening was spent at a gun range in San Leandro (we provided our own transportation), where we shot 20 rounds each under close supervision by Antoine. [I did pretty well and brought my paper target home to put in my window to warn away would-be burglars. :) ] Tonight, Antoine took my SO and me back to the range (this part not applicable for those who paid for the $59 or $65 class that was offered through Groupon and Google Offers), and we got to go through many more rounds during various drills over a two+ hour period. This session was extremely effective, with Antoine observing us and providing individual tips and cautions. We both really appreciated his teaching style -- informative but personable. He definitely knows his way around firearms as well as the law (was on the force for 13 years before starting his consulting company). read more

I took the Fisher Executive Protection Training class and what can I say...I'm officially MI6, James Bond you know what I mean! No really, I wish someday in my dreams I'll be in that type of shooting caliber. Antione's Fisher Executive Protection Training is a great class for beginners like myself. We started with the typical classroom style course and then took the HSC test. Of course I passed it with a 100% score, yea! We also talked a lot about Home Invasions and what happens if you are involved. How should you protect your family and yourself in a home invasion. Then we got our hands on the actual pistols and there were several to chose from. The whole entire course was focused on gun safety. How to correctly use a pistol, lock it, and store it in your home. Once he felt that we understood how to operate a pistol safely we then went to the range for some action! The second day we went directly to the range and Antione performed a refresher course before we entered the range. Then we learned more about how to shoot accurately with a pistol. He had several rounds of activities that I found very fun shooting at the range. I won't disclose these so you can find out yourself! By the end of the night my arms were pretty tired but my aim improved significantly. Overall I highly recommend this course if you are thinking of protecting yourself and your family. It's pretty crucial to learn about the safety and handling of a pistol at all times. I think I might even start learning about competition shooting now that I'm comfortable with a loaded handgun in my hand! read more

Class was co-taught by Antoine Fisher (he of Fisher Executive Protection fame) and a former marine/gun range worker named Adrian. I took the class with five other people. The experience of the other students ranged from "never fired a gun" to "owns a gun" which can be a difficult dynamic for a teacher. Teach to the highest level, the lowest level, or something in between? Both instructors were absolutely top notch, but in different ways. Antoine was a bit more jovial. Adrian was a bit more straight forward and factual. But they were both very responsive to questions and managed to work in a large amount of individual instruction. Classroom instruction focused the vast majority on developing safety habits, a great approach before handing loaded firearms to a group of notices. A small portion of the classroom lessons went over home defense scenarios, and these were tastefully approached from strategic, legal, and moral standpoints. Very responsible. Then to the range. Each student gets 20 rounds in a highly structured environment. Then the class is over, unless students wanted to buy more rounds and keep shooting (and to try some of the other provided pistols). Surprised surprise, everyone did. The instruction continued, and once students seemed to master the basics of safety, Adrian began offering advice on marksmanship. I carpooled to the range with two of the first-time shooters in the class (a mid-20s son and his dad). On the way over, they were nervous about shooting for the first time and unsure about ever owning a firearm. On the drive back afterwards, they respected firearms without having irrational fear of them. Not bad, eh? read more

Totally solid training...Antoine Fisher is a great instructor, clearly has a lot of experience with firearms. His background and personal experience provides for great anecdotes, which informed my understanding of how to safely operate a pistol. As a novice, the course made handling and discharging a semi-automatic pistol a safe and enjoyable process. The first portion of the class was all safety related, never boring, and seemed to be constantly relayed back to a practical usage understanding. As the class progressed we were all taught how to properly handle, and utilize the mechanics of the guns. I loved that there was an array of different semis to learn with, as it gave me an opportunity to see the commonalities and small ways different manufacturers configure safeties, slide springs, magazine releases, etc. Mr. Fisher, is super-personable, and patient, he worked with everyone individually, but never had any of us just standing around, there was always something to keep us occupied or engaged, totally worth every bit of the Yelp Deal I paid for it! Each attendee got ample time handling an unloaded gun - including a display of how to clean a weapon - and then received several rounds of ammunition to fire under supervised conditions at a range. We spent time in the classroom and learned how to safely handle weapons, took the handgun safety test, and practiced our skills at the range. I bought one of the daily deal coupon (either Groupon or LivingSocial), and even thought I shot handguns before I wanted a refresher course. Scheduling was easy, and they were quite flexible. I had to use it by the end of 2012, but I didn't see any openings in 2012 in their online scheduling site. I called and the old lady was more than happy to accomodate. Most of time was spent on working with unloaded gun inside - how to load magazine and hold the gun. They were patient and helped anyone who seemed to be having problems. We had enough practice and by the time we went to the range, most people were comfortable handling the guns. I think it was a really good way to learn - practice a lot with unloaded gun first. Now for missing one star (4 out of 5). Parking really sucked at both practice place (in downtown Oakland) and the gun range. They only had one Beretta and rest of them were Glocks. Beretta happened to jam all the time, which seemed to indicate they didn't clean it often or beforehand. Other than those small negatives, everything was great. Fun and informative class. Heard of it through LivingSocial. Mr. Fisher is a perfect instructor. Polite, on time, funny, energetic, patient, knowledgeable, and informative. He let me choose from half a dozen guns for the perfect fit and was patient with my, "Do I shoot with left hand or right hand?" confusion (I'm left-handed but right-armed). I really loved how this class was hands on and how we got to go practice shooting at the range. I liked the reload drills and the back and forth moving target too. Purchased a Groupon from them and they exceeded my expectations above and beyond! The receptionist, Dee, is not only very helpful but funny too, and my instructor Adrian had a wealth of experience knowledge to share and made sure we learned what needed to be learned. I never met Mr. Fisher personally, but I've heard good things. Everyone was very professional. I actually had prior experience with a gun, but it had been a few years and never formally had practice. This class was worth every penny - Adrian shared basic knowledge about the structure and function of guns, and not only showed us the right was to hold and discharge a gun, but the wrong ways too. He also bestowed knowledge of the law and when it is and is not appropriate to possess/use a gun. Lastly, I appreciated having repeated drills using unloaded guns before actually going to the shooting range. All in all, worth every penny! read more

I recently took the Gun Safety 4 hour training class. I got a deal from Living Social. I found the instructor and his assistant were both very informative. I did not feel intimated in asking questions even iff the questions seemed trivial or serious. (and I ask plenty). I got the answers that I was looking for. I purchased this deal via Groupon and I must say IT WAS WORTH IT!!! I have participated in several "gun training classes" and this one was by far the BEST!! The instructor was Antoine Fisher and he gave a wealth of knowledge to me as well as the other 12 people in the class. He provided real life legal cases (Colorado shooting, Sandy Hook and more). This class was like an intro to gun law, civilian police etiquette, and more!!!!! Regardless of the price, IT IS WORTH every penny!!!! read more
