I've been stopping by this Cuban cafeteria almost every morning on my way to work for the past four…read moreyears. At this point, the staff knows my order before I even get to the counter, which says a lot about how often I'm here and how much I enjoy the place. In my opinion, they serve the best Cuban tostada in Southwest Florida. The Cuban bread is exactly how it should be--not overly soft or spongy--and toasted to the perfect golden crisp. Pair that with a large café con leche, and you've got the perfect start to the day. Every now and then I'll add a couple of ham croquetas, and they never disappoint. Over the years I've worked my way through much of their hot food selection, including the congri rice, yuca, fried plantains, pork chunks, ropa vieja, and Cuban tamales. Every dish has been consistently flavorful and satisfying. I've even ordered large catering platters for holidays and family events, and they've always been a hit. Needless to say, this is one of my go-to spots. Great food, friendly people, and consistent quality keep me coming back week after week. And I almost forgot--the chicharrones are absolutely FIRE. If they're available, do yourself a favor and grab some.

1 STAR -- Absolutely Terrible Customer Service…read more I would give ZERO stars if I could. This was one of the most disappointing and inconsiderate experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. I called La Delicias ahead of time specifically to confirm their hours because I wanted to make sure we could come in and eat. I was told they were open until 7:00 PM. We arrived at approximately 6:15 PM -- nearly 45 minutes before their posted closing time -- expecting to sit down and have dinner. Instead, we were told, "Sorry, you cannot eat here because we close at 7:00 and we need time to clean." Seriously? If you don't allow customers to sit down and eat at 6:15 PM, then YOU ARE NOT OPEN UNTIL 7:00 PM. Change your hours to reflect the actual time you stop serving customers. I even explained to the woman that I had called ahead before coming and specifically asked about their closing time. I told her, "I called an hour ahead of time. You told me you close at 7:00. It's 6:15, and I'm here, and I can't even sit down and eat?" There was absolutely no empathy, no attempt to accommodate us, and no concern whatsoever that we had made the effort to call ahead and come there based on the information they gave us. I completely understand that employees need time to clean and close the restaurant. But you don't start turning customers away nearly an hour before your advertised closing time and expect people to be okay with it. If you need that much time to clean, then your business hours should say that you close at 6:15 PM. This wasn't about expecting special treatment. It was about basic honesty, reasonable customer service, and respecting people's time. We drove there expecting to have dinner, only to be turned away while they were still technically open. Extremely disappointing. Extremely inconsiderate. I will not be returning, and based on this experience, I cannot recommend La Delicias to anyone.

I blew into South Florida on a late flight, the kind that leaves your back stiff and your stomach…read moregrowling. By the time I checked into the hotel, the kitchen had closed up shop tighter than a bank vault after hours. A cabbie, the talkative type, said there was a Cuban café that might do the trick the next day. Said it with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing where to find a good plate when the city's asleep. I made a mental note. Next morning, after a half-hearted attempt at the hotel gym--arm day, always arm day--I followed my gut and my informant's lead straight to San Luis Café. Rolled in around 2 o'clock, give or take. The place was dead quiet, like the calm before a storm. The cook and the waitress were huddled near the door, deep in conversation. Didn't flinch when I walked in. I took a seat near the window, the kind of spot where a man can keep an eye on both the dining room and the street. Outside, the sky was turning the color of bruises, lightning slicing it open like a knife. Inside, it was another world--clean, calm, dry. The kind of joint that doesn't try too hard. Cuban flags draped the walls, old travel posters from Havana watching me like ghosts from another time. I ordered the ropa vieja, figured it was the safe bet. Comes with two sides. I went with black beans, white rice, and threw in some tostones for good measure. What can I say? I like a little crispiness with the storm. The food came quick. Hot, flavorful, and with enough heart to make you forget you're eating alone. The shredded beef was a touch salty, but nothing a can of Diet Coke couldn't handle. The beans were mild, just like I remembered from my last trip through Little Havana. Cuban comfort food--understated, steady, familiar. The plantains, though--that's where they got me. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, like a dame with a secret. Forget fries. These things could win wars. The waitress, friendly but not overbearing, checked in just enough to remind me I hadn't disappeared completely. When I was ready to vanish back into the wet streets, I paid at the counter and grabbed a medianoche to go. A little something for later, when the night got quiet and the city got loud. All in all? A satisfying, no-frills meal that didn't shake me down for more than it was worth. If you ever find yourself in that part of town with an empty stomach and a need for shelter, San Luis Café's a safe bet. Just make sure you get the plantains.

We asked for water but was given bottles which we didn't ask for. The next guy who walked in, they gave a cup of water. Pretty annoying. Also, unless they charge $3 for a water bottle, then they def over charged us. $10 pan con bistec $13 ropa vieja $3 corquetta's $6 two desserts $32. 2 bottles of waters and bill was $41.12 hmmm before the credit card fee of 4% that they don't advertise. Walking in the restaurant smells marvelous..... not a spicy smell, but more a blend of savory. The table had white paper and was decorated for Valentine's Day !! Nice touch. First time for us.... They were not very crowded for lunch and we were seated right away. Victor approached us to take our drink order. What a friendly, nice guy. I ordered the Red Sangria, ($15.00) in a big wine glass which was very tasty. I then ordered the Pulpo Al Olivo from the "starters" menu, with a side of Tostones. (Which was Octopus, sliced avocado & a terrific Kalamata Olive cream sauce. The octopus was tender and piled on slices of avocado. They didn't skim on the avocado at all. Wasn't sure why the club crackers were added to the plate. I pushed them aside at first, but then used them as they were intended..... OMG..... the crackers added a slight buttery, savory taste to compliment the Kalamata sauce. And, it was extremely tasty and plentiful. Definitely would order this again !!! My husband ordered Tallarin Huancaina Con Savana de Lomo. My best interpretation was ~ skirt steak on pasta with a spicy cream sauce !! He LOVED it !! We asked.... they provided !! We were able to buy a 16oz jar of the delicious Huanciana sauce to take home. YES...... YES..... highly recommended and we will be back again !!!

A great way to start your meal! Wife ordered her favorite Peruvian dish, Lomo Saltado. She loved how the beef was cooked and the seasoning is perfect. I ordered the grilled octopus. It was tender and flavorful. This is a culinary experience you must try! The presentation for both dishes are colorful and artistic. In fact, I ate the flower as Nicholas told us it is edible! A Well-designed bar is fully stocked and a pool table is available to provide a little relaxation. Went in for an early dinner. We were seated by the Windows booth. We started with a Patria Y Vida - an excellent mix of Rum with Ganadine, Rum with Curacao and Coconut Rum - a perfect trifecta color presentation for a frozen drink! Wife ordered a small portion of Spicy Rice - rice with shrimp, chicken, and beef mixed with Jalapeno with slices of avocado and fried plantains. She asked and tell the chef, "Take it easy with Jalapeno." Well, it was done exactly to her liking. Amazing! One happy lady here! I opted with a Seafood stew or soup (Sopa de Mares). It has crab legs, crayfishes, clams, mussels, shrimps, calamari, and a small filet of fish (which I cannot identified!). It mixed with several vegetables, the flavor from the seafood is unmistakable well balanced here. A few slices of toasted Cuban bread went well. We did not have any dessert. May be on our next visit!
