Took the train out of Helsinki airport the other day and it was a quick and easy experience. Signage is clear from the terminal to get to the trains. There are a couple very deep escalators to go down into the train station. Payment is made via the app. There are also payment islands in the middle of the train station. Payment can also be made by tapping the card reader once on board after selecting the zones and the quantity of tickets. The train into the city is 4,3 Euros with no airport surcharge unlike other cities and takes 38 minutes to get into the city centre. read more

Like all too many cities, the airport is located a good distance from the downtown center. Helsinki is one of those cities. But like some of the better ones, there is a nice, simple, easy system to get you between the two! Getting from the arrivals hall to the train station is a bit of a walk but it's well lit, it's smooth, and there is plenty of signage so that you can be sure that you're going the right way. Easy handicapped access with escalators and elevators down to the platform level. At the platform, there are a couple of helpers but I'm an old pro at these things and I was easily able to work out the cost for the ticket and purchase it with a €20 note. After taking out the €5 for the ticket, I now have 15 €1 coins. What I have since learned is that there's an app - HSL - and you can purchase your ticket on the app, saving you 50 cents and tons of hassle. This is the train station that takes you from the Helsinki Airport, which is technically in Vantaa, about 30 miles north of Helsinki. It's much cheaper to take the train into town rather than a Taxi. Finland doesn't have ride hailing apps like Lyft or Uber. The trains run frequently, and are spacious and clean. There's even a restroom on board the trains, that was also hygienic. The Helsinki Airport Train Station is sooo far from the airport! The entrance is between Terminal 1 and 2. Either way, you're going to have to walk. It's a long, long walk from the terminal down a gently sloping ramp, where you have to take two elevators or escalators down to get to the platform. The platform walls have huge murals that are quite beautiful and dramatic. There is inadequate seating though- not many benches around- just people leaning against the station walls. Some benches after such a long walk would've been appreciated. The walkways and the platform were well labeled, brightly lit, safe and clean. It was just a long walk- and when you're hauling so much luggage that you look like a refugee, it's a difficult haul. They forbid using the airport luggage handcarts at the entrance, so you're on your own to haul everything. The platform is so far away from the airport terminals, that they need a train to take you to the train station! read more

It's brilliant that the Helsinki Vantaa airport now has a train connection to the Helsinki central station - but beware that (currently?) the walk between the airport and train station is certainly not a few hundred metres like the signs states but more like a 2 km walk outdoors. If you have a lot of luggage that is pretty inconvenient. Once you reach the train station (which is very modern and fresh) you should know that the walk is far from over, you have to go down 5 (!) escalators, unless you opt for the elevator. And then walk in a long long long culvert before you finally reach the platform. The comfortable ride into the city takes about 45 minutes and costs around 10 euros (Nov 2015). The ticket machine on the platform didn't work - and why it's only one machine and situated at the far end of the platform is a mystery! - and never mind about the digital signs in the train windows that says 'ticket sales' resp 'no ticket sales' because the train staff sells tickets. Unlike the train to and from Arlanda airport in Stockholm this train also works as a commuter train ring line so be prepared for a lot of stops along the way. But still, a train ride is a really convenient and comfortable way to travel to and from airport and city centre. Even if the long walk to get there is less so. read more

The train station at Helsinki airport is really a welcome addition to airports transport options. The easy connection to central Helsinki is a really great improvement from the oft delayed buses and expensive (and often lacking in numbers) taxis. The entrance is conveniently located in between T1 and T2 (so no need to walk outside any longer) and while escalators are jot fully operational the elevators are fairly fast. The station is clean and neat and the trains modern and spacious. I also really appreciate that it is possible to use the local travel cards so a cheap option to get into town. read more
