When I moved to RI, I found Capitol Hill Dental on Smith Street in Providence, RI through my…read moreinsurance. The office was conveniently located and walkable distance from my apartment. There is also a small parking lot in the back. When I enter the building, I go downstairs for general dentistry. There is a small waiting room with a few chairs and the hygienist will bring you back to the room when ready. I never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes before meeting the hygienist. From February 2022 to September 2024, I went to Capitol Hill Dental for all my dental visits mostly for just cleaning and exams. The front desk staff and hygienist were always very friendly and we had great conversations. My teeth came out clean and were healthy. During my visit in September 2024, the staff informed me that next month Corporate has moved the general dentistry dentist and hygienist to another office and this location was going to be closed. They offered me to make my next appointment in that other office in Johnston or Scituate or to change dental offices. I decided to look for another dentist office in Providence since it is more convenient.

The practice was sold recently to someone called Katherine Burton, who I've never seen. I have seen one of the other Dentists there, who is young and eager and seems knowledgeable. I do find the bedside manner not quite filling Dr. Barr's shoes, although I suppose that's something that comes with time. Other things have changed, too: the front desk staff, who I always liked, and I've had to trundle out to the other office in North Prov a few times because they couldn't reschedule me on South Main. None of which is a deal-killer, and I guess if I walked in the door today I wouldn't think much of it, but, I don't know, it's just the way my trust in the practice has been lowered just a bit that feels uncomfortable, somehow.

He's always training his assistants, never had the same assistant twice. One time the assistant shoved the xray thing in my mouth 6 times before moving me to another chair where the machine was actually working. Nevermind the fact that the physical office building is fairly new but it's all falling apart. I love my dentist, he's worked on my teeth for 20+ years but I have to switch. A doctor's office is only so good as the support staff.

I've seen two hygienists and would return happily to either of them. They do a thorough clean and always make sure I'm up to date on X-rays. I was extremely impressed by his incredible knowledge and attentiveness to my personal needs. On December 7, 2017 I had breast augmentation with a lift. I have never had surgery and Dr. Sullivan eased all of my anxiety. He took time right before anesthesia to comfort me once again to go over the procedure. His compassion, sensitivity and overall demeanor exemplified the qualities of the ultimate doctor. The same level of respect and caring was also consistent with his professional staff that make me feel so welcomed at every office visit. The day after the surgery Dr. Sullivan called me personally to check in and see how I was doing. While this may be a common practice for him, I felt validated by his sincerity. I even received flowers from him which helped brighten my spirits. I encountered some difficulty where by my body was rejecting the dissolvable stiches but Kim from his office was amazing with taking such good care of me. Thought a long time about leaving a review. I had my gums done about 2 years ago. This was always…read morean insecurity if mine and I finally figured out how to pay for it as insurance does not cover it. About 6-8 months after, I felt my gums hadn't looked as I wanted them to and just wasn't overall too happy with the result. So I called back and made an appt. I thought maybe my gums were growing back maybe since my teeth had looked different from the pictures I took right when I got the procedure (once it healed). To note, this was over $5,000 and I still felt guilty saying I wanted it touched up. Dr. Shapiro was nice but she told me they looked fine and charged me $50 for the appointment. I cried the whole way home. 2 years later, I'm looking into getting the procedure again with a different doc which will be another $5,000. While my experience was great the first time, I felt swept to the side when I wanted to go back even though this procedure took me forever to financially recover from. But I felt since it was my smile it mattered and I wanted to love it. Just for others who may be saving for this, make sure you advocate for yourself.

I could not make that appointment so they said they had NOTHING ELSE and they put me on a call list. How many businesses do you know that do horrible work and then don't offer to fix it? This just proves what I already thought - that he has no backbone. I like people who stand behind their work, not blame people for their shortcomings. He's probably going to treat me like I did something to cause this filling to come off because that's who he is. And he'll probably also tell me that he didn't have an appointment because I missed one cleaning or something. This dentist is weird. He takes things personally and has zero social skills. Any good review you see on here will soon be somebody who is upset. They will cancel appointments on you and not reschedule and then make you feel horrible for not coming in and seeing them. They are very disorganized and their scheduling is archaic. There is a very bizarre culture in that office and it's not centered around the patient as it should be.
