We are furnishing a new home from scratch and are spending tens of thousands of dollars on…read morefurniture, but this store won't get a single buck from us. My wife and I walked in this afternoon looking specifically for a dining room set and a wooden rocker but no one offered to help us. We spent about half an hour poking around on our own but couldn't get anyone to help. We're in our mid-fifties and very upper middle class and, I would think, are exactly the kind of customers they would like to have. I guess not. Many Kansas City furniture stores have gone out of business since Nebraska Furniture Mart came to town, but if Traditions fails, it has nothing to do with the competition.

There are millions of furniture stores and billions of furniture inside of them - and it's enough…read moreto paralyze a girl from decorating her own damn room with so many options her head explodes! So let me make it simple. Traditions Furniture is a great stop of you like the following: 1. WOOD. Hearty woods, dark and rustic and moody. I knew a few families growing up that decorated around wood and their homes smelled like this store, with a little hint of bacon - strange but I promise it's dead-on. TF doesn't offer any light woods, nothing to brighten a room - it all looks amazing in candle light, VERY cozy and warm surroundings. 2. Nothing modern. Nothing. It's not too feminine with the abundance of leather goods and rigidly shaped lamps. There is no silver, chrome, simple, mod anything. 3. Cheap art reproductions. The paintings were large and well-framed (possibly by the many framing shops around the Santa Fe neighborhood - there is an ungodly amount of them). But among the monolithic pieces, nothing I saw was over $400, and most of it was between $100 and $200. And these are statement wall-hangings here - so their prices are surprisingly affordable if you are looking to accessorize the home. 4. Lamps. Also affordable, and plenty to chose from, was their collection of table lamps, most of which were low-lighting and tasteful, classic pieces. I found a few African-inspired and Victorian style lamps I thought were interesting and for only $25 to $50! AND they offer a coupon at the door that cuts the price of one home accessory item by 25% until after December 1st - so jump on it. 5. Traditional Christmas decorations. They had huge wall hangings with phrases like, "Hearts come home for Christmas" and "Your husband just called and he said you could by anything," (how dark ages is that last quote?!) They also had tons of those collectible Santa dolls some women like so much around this time. You know - I would love this place more if it were a little more Comfort Sofa and a little less "this is the men's smoking room."

I felt a little guilty wandering in there with no intention to buy a new model kitchen for my home…read more(I'm sorry, but what 20 year old can do that in this lifetime?! Some I'm sure, but no one I want to know...) I live for model kitchen stores (like Kitchens by Kleweno is Westport) but my visits are no less sincere than a little girl playing dress up. I clearly can't afford a dazzling silver modern Manhattan kitchen - but in Kansas I can look at a few and dream can't I? I was greeted by an older man who showered me with thick kitchen design magazines (thanks for the coffee table reads) and then he told me I could take a look around. I appreciated how he gave me space to wander - not like those damn Hallmark women that would rather claw onto your shoulder and be carried with you through the store like a black-feathered crow. I couldn't steal a stove or anything, so there honestly was no need to 'keep an eye on the kid.' And for the next twenty minutes, in the lull of the elevator music, I drifted from kitchen set to kitchen set - each one invoking a different emotion in me, a different story told. The first kitchen was like the playboy's serious no-frills kitchen complete with hard stainless steel appliances, dark wooded cabinetry and even darker tiled walls - it was masterfully designed - but I'm not a playboy (I thought it was funny how they added little frills like the SKYY vodka and martini glasses filled with crystal - it was so me - kidding). Other kitchens were more Johnson County-approved, with softer woods and cabinetry, spring greens and fall oranges and colorful vases and plate-ware. Once I had looked through the eight or nine sets they had built (the owner I had talked to in the entry and his wife), I looked through a large collection of posters they had printed out describing the work they do and it sounded so interesting - all of the broadened design that they incorporate. Of course, I thought - in Kansas? How surprisingly forward of this place...they do kind of fool you with a title like "Classic Kitchens" because that's only the half of it. I looked through their work of contemporary and metropolitan kitchens as well as American and European traditional kitchens. Kitchens for beach homes with waterfront views and kitchens for a wine connoisseur and hundreds more I will not bore you to write about - but it was fascinating to look though. When I asked the man if he had a pamphlet about the different styles I might take home with me - he pulled out an actual book and told me it would cost $5. I thought it was a joke and laughed - but he was serious and felt bad about sticking me with a cost, so instead he gave me more free magazines to take home. Sweet, sweet man! So, I left with his wife's business card - and falsely made him believe I would discuss 'my homes kitchen redecoration' with my father - LIES (I'm awful) but otherwise just too poor to walk into a store like that. To be fair, CK offers two lines of design - one higher end and one less expensive option - and both still too much for me. Some day...sigh.

The colors seem like they'll be great but after all the work of getting them on the walls you hate them. That's me. And then I live with it until I feel like painting again (which can be years). When I was finally fed up with my repeated failures I contacted Ann to come check out my rooms and make some color and rug suggestions that would be in harmony with the furniture I own. I can say, without hesitation, that Ann's suggestions were spot-on. I painted my living room, dining room and hallway based on the color suggestions she made and have been happy with them for over a year now. Additionally, Ann helped me obtain rugs for my two largest rooms. This was another huge help for me as I had shopped both online and at some of the local stores and was unsuccessful at finding the perfect rugs for my rooms. I believe Ann prices her services based on the time she spends. This may be different for other types of projects but I found her prices reasonable for the work she delivered. I am a happy customer.
