This is a two part review. The first is strictly on the set of the restaurant. Horrible!!! Has to stand waiting for a while. The place is not set up as a restaurant but as a large room with tables. The individual who took our drink order can't take our food order. The segregation of duties is evident, but that's a bad thing. Loud carts roll around while you eat, very horrible! Of course the culture in Peru is of the slower kind, you need to understand that if you are in a hurry for the check, you need to just ask cuase they will let you sit and hang out all day and night. This place was okay but I wouldn't return for a few reasons... The plaza the restaurant is located in was in bad repair. We were greeted politely and got a seat right away. No problems until we needed to order for my son. There were no "kid friendly" items. The waitress dropped dirty silverware in my purse and got cheese on the inside of it and returned to our table with ONE paper napkin. When our food came, mine tasted like liquid smoke. We came here with a groupon. We were a little hesitant to walk in since the restaurant is located in a shady strip mall, but when you walk in, the restaurant itself is very nicely decorated. We ordered a fried fish dish with onions and tomatoes and a seafood dish. Both dishes came with white rice. Both dishes were absolutely delicious! Service was a bit slow; the prices were a little on the higher side; however, the food made up for it! My boyfriend also ordered the merengue cake, which he said was decent. I came here for a friends birthday and was WOWed by this unassuming restaurant in a strip mall. If this place was inside the loop, I'd come here pretty regularly for the great food and to take advantage of their BYOB policy. Going through their menu, the Tacu Tacu Lemon Tree immediately caught my eye. Having been to other parts of South America, I've had my fair share of this traditional beef, rice, beans and french fries dish topped with two fried eggs - Lemon Tree did not disappoint! The flavors were very unique and the beef was well seasoned and cooked properly to my order. I had a bit of my wife's Paella which was also really good. I also tried some of their ceviche. Usually, I am not a fan of Peruvian ceviche with their choices of fish and veggies (vs what i am used to at traditional tex mex joints), but, compared to what I've had at more expensive/trendy peruvian restaurants, theirs was definitely in-line if not better. I forgot to mention, that green sauce with the chips they serve is awesome. Our server was AWESOME for a large group too. He not only happily took the numerous group pictures we requested of him (inside the restaurant and out front), but also graciously split checks for us. If you want to explore different cuisines, this place is a must try. I've never seen a Peruvian restaurant in Houston before, and was excited to find this spot. That being said, I've never had Peruvian food before and have no idea whether this place is authentic. It's located in a not so great looking strip center, but the restaurant is pretty formal inside. I had a friend of mine call me and say she had a Groupon for this place and wanted male company as she did not want to be seen as a loser eating a meal alone... Being the I will try anything type person I am and a damsel has asked for my assistance . I said lets go . we showed up for lunch , and found the place was fairly empty . service was fast and prompt. I ordered the Mussels appetizer .. damn those were worth going for by itself. My main course was Paella. I love Paella and this place while not the best I have had was darn good. I've been going to Lemon Tree for years, and I'm glad to see it gradually evolve and grow into the establishment it is today. It's located in a rinky-dink strip mall next to a neighborhood bar, and is definitely the definition of "don't just a restaurant by its exterior." In other words, if there ever was a hole-in-the-wall, Lemon Tree is it. There are lots of regulars, and for good reason-- the food here is delicious. I'm partial to the lomo saltado and the arroz chaufa. The ceviche and tiradito en salsa de rocoto are also regular orders for my family and me, as is anything with huancaína. For desert, the suspiro limeño is awesome, but I've found they only have it once in a blue moon. The pastel de lúcuma is usually available, and it's delicious. The service is not fast by any means, but all of the servers are very open, friendly, and welcoming. The food is worth the wait. It's BYOB, so bring a good bottle of wine (or two), a group of friends, and enjoy! read more

WE PAID US$70 FOR 3 PEOPLE, my brother in law didnt even eat his food because "it has the taste of uncured fiver glass resin" (Pollo Saltado or as he want to call it Pollo "Insultado") I got a big plate of nothing: 4 little pieces of fish, 3 shripms (is the true, just 3) and some calamari I had Jalea Mixta, the only thing it was good was the Tacu Tacu Lemon Tree my sister got. We wanted to have some Chicha Morada... they didnt have it, Cancha... they didnt have it, Jugo de Mago... they didnt have it, all that was in the menu but they didnt have it. Expect kinda slow service but this is somewhat typical for any kind of latin american restaurant (i'm hispanic so I can say this). Here are some of the yummy food we've tried here: App: yucca balls filled with mozzarella and a delicious dipping sauce App (free): chips with sauce (we asked for more sauce three times that's how amazing it is) Entree: ceviche mixto (so fresh and flavorful) and ticu ticu lemontree (the flavors in this dish alone will keep you coming back) Dessert: meregue de licua (although i'm sure i've spelled this wrong and you will not find it on the menu, ask for this and you will not be disappointed! I expected it to be packed on a Saturday night but for a restaurant to skimp on service and the food when busy is a huge disappointment. We got our drink asap, waiter for about fifteen mins for someone to take our order n refill our chips (after we asked two different waiters for more chips) . Once our order was taken we waited longer for the food. .which I with I could say was worth the wait but it wasnr. The food had no flavor n one of our plates was cold. My first time to eat Puruvian food, and it was really good. The service was great and the food was family style. We had small kids with us and the staff was very nice and attentive. The decor is simple but cute, and it was funny that they had a DJ there (Friday night) and we left early but it appeared that there was a small dance floor, so staying would have been interesting to see if people actually dance. ;) We ate the ceviche (GOOD) and a kid type of plate (fries and sausage) and yuca for appetizer, so good. If you have any luck, they will answer the phone. But that's not the big issue here. They're just rude people. They are not cordial, they do not care about their patrons, they will be petty, etc You have countless examples to read here, as many other people have pointed out how lousy the service is. Like this one time I asked the lady if I could get my food in two different containers, she gave me a big NO, then I asked her if she could talk with the boss, as my request didn't seem unreasonable, then she comes back and just says NO CAN DO, without even an apology. See my review of the other location for more info... This location gets a half-star (well, a whole star, but I would give it 3.5) less than the other for two reasons: parking is really limited. The lot is small, and many of the spaces are marked for specific businesses. They were out of many items (in particular, drinks). Food was just as good, and here we tried a few desserts. We had the lucuma meringue, which was okay. I don't really like lucuma much, so take that opinion (but not the meringue) with a grain of salt. We also had some kind of cake roll that had dulce de leche. It was also okay. I think the cake could have been better. The atmosphere here was nice - the strip mall looks kind of crappy, so the yellow inside is like an oasis of pleasantness. Service not bad. read more

I have limited experience with Peruvian food, but the flavor just was not appetizing. "Meh. I've experienced better." A group of 6 of us came here for lunch. One of my colleagues had been there about 5 years ago and decided we all needed to try it. The flavors were muddled. It seemed like the sauces had been mixed and sat in a fridge for too long. There were flavors that just didn't seem right. Maybe my sauce sat next to a boiled egg tray and another sauce without a good cover in the fridge together for days and took on each other's flavors? I don't know. It was odd. I did not like the sauce and the sauce was the only part of the meal with any sort of distinguishable flavor. The rest was freakishly bland. I had shrimp, but they didn't taste like shrimp. Maybe freezer-burned shrimp? My plate was a large quantity, but I did not want to take the rest of it home. Nobody at the table seemed excited. We were all so quiet while we shoveled down our food that my friend asked "So, do you like it?" and everybody did the fake "Oh... yea!" The deserts looked great, but I didn't try one. Maybe it's the cuisine that I'm not digging, but it just wasn't all that good. Three of us at the table got one of the fish dishes and they were all virtually the same - some fried fish filets with a different sauced poured on top. The appetizers were actually pretty good, though. The dried corn was fun (kind of like unseasoned corn-nuts) and the ceviche (it's an entre, but we got it as an appetizer) was actually quite good. Had lunch with a group today and really enjoyed this place. The good: We had the ceviche, shrimp saltado and paella. All of these dishes were good portions and quite flavorful. Also had the tres leches which was one of the best Ive ever had. I would recommend every dish we had. The (not so) bad: The restaurant is a little hidden in a strip mall and parking is limited. Also they don't have a spicy sauce (pepper sauce or tabasco or anything) which I think every place should have. Lastly the décor was a bit odd: white table cloths and dirty ceilings- I don't get it.
