I've heard it said before that if you want home cookin', then eat at home. I normally subscribe to…read morethis belief. It's one reason I don't go out for breakfast ~ I can make a pretty good breakfast at home. No use paying someone to do something I can do. So, going into Jackson's restaurant, a mom and pop restaurant specializing in home cooked style food, I had my doubts. Walking up to what resembled a school cafeteria lunch line only furthered my doubts. And, seeing the sheer number of different options sitting out behind the glass window only furthered my suspicions. Look, I was wrong. The food here is really good. The service is super friendly and helpful. I was so overwhelmed by all the choices I just told the lady behind the glass counter to pick me something. She obliged with a kindness that made me think she knew me somehow. She chose the chicken and dumplings, beef stew, apples, and two different types of corn bread. Now, I thought initially, and she even admitted, that the chicken and dumplings/beef stew mix was a little unorthodox, but that they were both so good I had to try them. Both were fantastic. The apples were awesome. I liked both types of corn bread. When I got up to leave, she called me over to the counter and said that since it was my first time there, I'd get a free dessert. You all, I was too full to even try. The food here is both tasty and filling. I was in Richmond for a conference at Eastern Kentucky University. So it was really convenient to stop by. But I'd say that even if you're remotely close, it's worth a visit. Don't, as I did, judge a book by its cover.

It is wonderful that this buisness was able to offer this to the community. I had their Nonna's Italiano, which is served on a ciabetta sand roll, Genoo salami, sweet coppa, proscuito, provole, topped off with an Italian Vinaigrette. It is served with fresh fruit and animal crackers. My wife had the Mae Elizabeth Salda also served with the Italian vinaigrette, consisted of salad greens, sweet onions, peppers, baby tomatos cumcber, carrots, ham, turkey, topped with provolone. The Lavender lemonade is a excellent combination. The service was oustanding and they are very attentive to the needs of the customers. Will return again.

The food is fresh and flavorful. The local patrons make you feel welcome as well. Glad we found this spot!

What has happened to this restaurant?…read more This used to be our favorite steakhouse to visit, and we would drive a good distance to get here. The service has been on a steady decline for about a year, and our most recent visit was the most disappointing so far. The rolls were overbaked and dry, and they came out dark brown with no shine from butter on top. We didn't even finish the basket, and the small plates had uneaten rolls. The salad bar was stocked and clean, but the ranch dressing was watered down, and some items, like the chickpeas, looked a little off. The service was the biggest issue. Our server was surprisingly disrespectful. I wanted a small portion with no leftovers and planned to order a kid's meal, since there is an option to eat as an adult meal for an additional three dollars which would be a good addition to the $9.99 salad bar which usually leaves me too full for a regular entree. Instead of simply taking the order, I was given a lecture about how there was no point in "gaming the system" because I would end up spending just as much for less food. I even explained that I wanted to pay the extra charge and was not trying to avoid anything. The rest of our table ordered ribs and ribeyes, so we were not exactly trying to cut corners. It felt more like she wanted to push us into ordering more for the sake of a larger tip, especially since we were also pressured to order appetizers and desserts. Because of the awkward experience, we ordered less and tipped less than usual. The manager did stop by our table, but when we gave a lukewarm response, he did not seem very interested. We are people who never complain, ever, but eating out is expensive, and there is a basic level of service and quality we expect for the money spent. Between the rolls, the service, and the fact that this is not our first disappointing visit in recent weeks, we will not be returning until we hear that things have improved. (To add perspective, we ate at a different steakhouse the day before which was very slow due to new hires being trained, but we had no complaints whatsoever because the staff was friendly and the food was delicious.)

We will never waste our money here again. Service was awful, appetizer burned, both duck and steak were overcooked. My meal was supposed to come with asparagus that was no where to found. When I inquired about the side, I was told that the asparagus was ground up in the half dollar size polenta cake. SERIOUSLY?? Duck portion was less than 4 ounces (mostly fat). . $45 for a tiny filet. These folks are trying to play at being a real restaurant when all they're really doing is robbing people blind with sub par food and service. One person covering 5 (yes, 5 WHOLE tables). Even on an incredibly slow night service was awful. I don't know about anybody else out there, but I don't have $200 to throw away on BS restaurants. Especially disappointing on your anniversary. Let we not forget the wines, no brands listed, that tasted like watered down crap. The only reason their Facebook says 100% recommended is because they delete any reviews that say otherwise, Trust me and skip this one. Go to Carsons, Corto Limo or Guiseppes for amazing food and service. Guess I should have ordered the hamburger. Live and learn.

After a nice day of hiking in Red River Gorge, seeing Natural Bridge, taking the sky lift, and…read morealmost falling several times, the Fat Man and his wife were feeling a little tired and hungry. We decided to venture over to Miguel's Pizza and see what offerings they had in store. Miguel's Pizza, a favorite among hikers and climbers, offers a variety of options, including healthy choices, and has a casual, rustic atmosphere in a historic building, with both indoor and outdoor seating. You can order pizza by the slice to mix and match, or order it whole. We ordered two slices of pepperoni. The crust was thin and crispy, but still had some good chew. However, it lacked flavor and was slightly dry. The crust reminds me of a frozen, pre-made crust. The sauce was thin, slightly sweet, but lacked flavor beyond the sweetness, and the slice could have used more sauce to help bite into the crust. The cheese was light on the pizza and lacked any pull, almost as if it were from a bag at the store. The pepperoni was thin and cut into different sizes, with an adequate amount on each slice and a nice amount of grease, heat, and chew. This was enjoyable on the pizza. We also ordered a couple of Margherita slices. The crust again had a good crunch but lacked flavor. There was a nice toast on the bottom. The cheese, as before, was light on the pizza, which is fine, but no pull again. The sauce was maybe a little lighter on these slices and lacked much flavor. The tomato and basil were fresh, but there wasn't much of either on the slices, leaving the pizza bare and us wanting more toppings. Miguel's menu offers several pizza options they specialize in, a build-your-own option, and salads, pasta, soups, and sandwiches, with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also offer beer and wine options with soft drinks. The Fat Man says that Miguel's Pizza is NOT Fat Man Approved.
