My wife was looking for cool stuff to do on our drive down to Florida. She stumbled upon the Red River Gorge area (some underground kayaking to be specific). We researched places to eat in the area, and found Miguel's Pizza. It looked good and had decent reviews. The clincher was my new remote coworker (located a few hours away from this area) who confirmed "oh yeah - ANY time we go down there, we get Miguel's!). After our adventure, we scooted over to Miguel's. It's kinda different, to say the least. Big with the campers. You walk up and order, and they'll bring your pizza to you (place your transponder on the marked mat on the table so they can find you!). While we waited, we got a chance to pet a few dogs that were hanging out with their humans. Always a bonus! It's also a cool place to people-watch. The food was UH-MAZING. We got a couple different kinds of pizzas and they were all fantastic. The sausage was the crumbled kind (versus slices or chunks). WINNER! The pepperoni was tasty. The white sauce with chicken was top notch. You can't go wrong! And the prices were extremely reasonable. There was a basketball court and volleyball to entertain yourself while waiting for your food. There were showers you could pay to use as well as camping on the property. Pizzas were fabulous -- we all enjoyed what we ordered. The absolute only suggestion I would add is a self service dispenser for water. I had read in another review that it's their breakfast that really stands out. That reviewer was right- breakfast was great! They have a good amount of options, and great prices. My niece and I both got the pumpkin pancakes, with a side of bacon. For some reason, hers came with whip cream. Mine came with yogurt, fruit compote, and syrup. They did give us butter and more syrup quickly when asked. They were great pancakes, a big portion. The bacon was not fancy, but good bacon, also a good portion. We ended up coming back after the natural bridge to get pizza to go. We had a pepperoni, sausage, black olive. The pizza I found pretty average, but the sausage, and ranch were very good. They also have pizza by the slice. Miguel's has plenty of seating. You order at the counter, they give you a button for the table. Despite the button, the servers seem to just call out names. We decided to venture over to Miguel's Pizza and see what offerings they had in store. Miguel's Pizza, a favorite among hikers and climbers, offers a variety of options, including healthy choices, and has a casual, rustic atmosphere in a historic building, with both indoor and outdoor seating. You can order pizza by the slice to mix and match, or order it whole. We ordered two slices of pepperoni. The crust was thin and crispy, but still had some good chew. However, it lacked flavor and was slightly dry. The crust reminds me of a frozen, pre-made crust. The sauce was thin, slightly sweet, but lacked flavor beyond the sweetness, and the slice could have used more sauce to help bite into the crust. The cheese was light on the pizza and lacked any pull, almost as if it were from a bag at the store. The pepperoni was thin and cut into different sizes, with an adequate amount on each slice and a nice amount of grease, heat, and chew. This was enjoyable on the pizza. We also ordered a couple of Margherita slices. The crust again had a good crunch but lacked flavor. There was a nice toast on the bottom. The cheese, as before, was light on the pizza, which is fine, but no pull again. The sauce was maybe a little lighter on these slices and lacked much flavor. The tomato and basil were fresh, but there wasn't much of either on the slices, leaving the pizza bare and us wanting more toppings. Miguel's menu offers several pizza options they specialize in, a build-your-own option, and salads, pasta, soups, and sandwiches, with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There were several people taking orders & you just go up when you're ready if others are around looking/discussing what to order. You might feel rushed but take your time lol There are seats in the first room where you order, some in the back room of that & they also have a big basement (you go outside & around to access that) so don't let the first space fool you. It was our first time at the Gorge and we had to stop at the iconic Miguel's Pizza! There's a large gravel parking lot off the main road - every time we drove past it was mostly full. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night, and the parking lot was about 75% full. When you walk up, there is a large area with large picnic tables. If you walk past the first area it leads down to a larger courtyard with a basketball court, more picnic tables, and a huge camping area. You order at the counter in the main building - they have semi traditional pizzas with a twist. They come in three sizes - 2 slices, 4 slices (half pizza) and whole pizza. Everything is reasonably priced. We order two slices of cheese and pepperoni and a whole BBQ chicken pizza. The wait was about 25 minutes, which wasn't bad with the amount of people at the restaurant. The kids took off and played basketball, foosball and other yard games while we waited. The food arrived pretty fast, and the kids gobbled up the cheese and pepperoni slices. The BBQ chicken was good but a little different - there were big slices of green pepper and some cilantro throughout. Not a lot of BBQ but we managed to eat the entire thing! It was the perfect dinner after a weekend of camping - kids were entertained and the food hit the spot! We only took one picture of a lonely slice but everyone devoured it so quickly. I came by for dinner to carb-load before a backpacking trip, and their customizable pasta bowls were perfect. Of course, the pizza is the real star: I tried the BBQ Chicken, BBQ Pork, and Hawaiian slices. The BBQ Chicken might be my favorite, but honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. Prices are reasonable - about $6 for two slices, or around $10 after tax. Four slices is basically half a pizza! The atmosphere is fun and casual, with WiFi available and lots of interesting art pieces around. You'll also find their colorful and funky shirts for sale, though a little pricey ($17 for a basic short sleeve, $25 for tie-dye, $29 for a long sleeve). The shirts run small, so you might want to size up. There's a large gravel parking lot available, but it can be hard to see in the dark, so be careful pulling in! I had heard legends of Miguel's Pizza. A MUST-VISIT if you're visiting Red River Gorge. But I did not truly understand the allure. Now I do! We stopped here last weekend, and I am now a believer. The line was outside the door when we arrived around 4 p.m. on a Saturday, but it moved fast. And the biggest thing it seems to know about Miguel's is the selection. You can choose what you want from their overflowing list of toppings. Pineapple? A personal fave! Chorizo? Delicious. Anchovies? Gross but sure. Hummus? Why not! Rice? Spiral pasta? Go for it! I didn't go quite that out there, but I did get a slice (which is really two big slices) with barbecue pork and sweet potato. And it was glorious! The crust is just perfection. This was the warm slice of comfort I needed on this early fall day. My friends and I found a picnic table in Miguel's large outdoor area, and our slices were soon brought to us. I also liked their beer list and the fact that they also had an outdoor bar for when you're standing in line or eating outside. Miguel's also has camping, so you'll get a mix of outdoorsy and glamping folks while eating here. Loved my time at the Gorge. I was hesitant to go here but my buddy really wanted to come here (due to the raving reviews). I read a recurring theme of rubbery cheese, overly greasy, bad crust, etc. We went on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m. We were one of only a handful of diners when we arrived. We each ordered a pizza and it arrived in ~ 17 minutes. My salad took 30 minutes to arrive so I took it with me after eating. The ingredients seemed fresh and contrary to what others stated, it wasn't overly greasy. In fact, I would say it had less grease than most pizzas. The first few slices were pretty good. As we continued to dine, the cheese did harden, perhaps sooner than I ever experienced and towards the end of the slice, the cheese and toppings would slide off the crust, leaving a tomato sauce covered crust. Speaking of the crust, it wasn't overcooked. In fact, it was undercooked. There were spots where the dough wasn't cooked through. The staff were friendly and pleasant. We dined inside and there were a couple of flies that I had to swat away a handful of times but not as bad as I had feared (from the reviews). The pizza is $12 for cheese only and $2 per topping which is reasonable. The size isn't listed but I would guess it to be 16" (maybe slightly smaller but it seemed bigger than a 14"). The taste was a little on the bland side. I grew up in Chicago so I know what a good pizza should taste like. Having said that, I would give the pizza 6.5/10, staff 9/10, ambiance 5/10.
