We usually stay in town at one of the motor lodges and frequent the local establishments for food and drink. One place we hit at least once is McGann's Pub and Wine Bar. It is run by a couple, Denny and Ellen, in what was a residence at some point. The wine bar is in the lower level with a bar and tables spread through out. There is also an outdoor patio. The owners are transplants from the Chicago area and some of the decor shows their roots (Chicago Cubs stuff, I am a White Sox fan :)). The place is very relaxing and laid back with a mixture of locals and out of towners clientele. A great place to meet people while enjoying a glass of wine or a beer. They make their own thin crust pizzas which also show their Chicago roots. Great pizza! It may take some time to get as Denny makes each pizza with love.

What really stands out here are the games, including axe throwing, shuffle board, Hammerschlagen (a nail pounding game), darts, pool, ping pong, cribbage, and probably something else that I didn't see. Their shuffle board table is one of the best I've ever played on -- full sized, smooth and fast. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but once you get zeroed in it makes for a great game. And, of course, as their name implies, the featured activity is axe throwing. Tossing a dangerous tool, trying to stick it in a wooden wall, and hitting the target for maximum points is harder than it looks. But once you get the technique mastered (even partially) it is incredibly satisfying and a lot of fun. Three stars for the bar, five four the games, four overall.

What a little find! We've past this place a million times over the years and didn't think twice…read moreabout it. This week, while doing laundry at the local place in Woodruff, I walked down the street to the closest place I could find to get some lunch. Fritz's was open.... being a bar I had my doubts.... and I walked in. First of all, no cigarett smoke. Even though I was by myself, I felt perfectly at ease sitting at the bar. I was given the food choices (no menu) and selected pound burger with pepper cheese. Accompanied of course by a glass of a local Wisconsin beer on tap. I took one bite and said to myself, what have I found! Crazy good burger. Bun was toasted and perfectly crispy. Ample amount of cheese. Onions served raw or grilled. Meat was juicy. Next time we were in town, I took my husband and he thought the same thing. A glass of draft beer and two burgers came to a total of $10. I left a $3 tip. I was that impressed. I love a smoke free bar. Nice job Wisconsin.

I'd give it a 5 but it's still a bar that serves good food. Not necessarily a family restaurant
