We've been wanting to come to the crab fest for years and finally made it up in 2025. They have a…read morenice outdoor setup with lots of vendors and big tents for the main event (the food!). Thought the prices were outrageous - I believe I paid $72 for 1 dinner! That gets you a crab, a corn cob, and slaw. Crab was good, as was the corn. Slaw was terrible - no flavor. We also got food from other vendors in the tent, including mexican (it was ok) and a couple small crab cakes that came with a flavorless slaw (not worth it for $22!). Afterwards, we were still hungry and wandered around town to get more food. We also took advantage of the weekend's free entry to the marine life center, which was awesome and our kids had a great time. I don't think we'll be back simply because the cost is too high for what you get and we weren't blown away by the food itself.

And honestly, Sequim does this switch better than almost anywhere. One minute you're side-eyeing bison that look like they've seen too much civilization, and the next you're wandering a certified organic lavender farm tucked into the rain shadow of the Olympics, where the sky feels like it's been turned up to "HD saturation." Jardin du Soleil especially leans into that pastoral reset button: rows of purple stretching out under that big Olympic Peninsula light, goats and chickens doing their indifferent farm philosopher thing, and then the full dessert arc--lavender lemonade into lavender ice cream like the place is committed to you leaving slightly fragrant and emotionally recalibrated. It's also one of those rare "free 99" experiences where the admission price is basically just your willingness to slow your internal clock for a while. The real currency there is sun exposure, quiet footsteps through the rows, and the faint hum of bees working overtime. Sequim in general feels like it's built on contrasts like this--wild edge of the Olympic Peninsula on one side, and then suddenly you're in this cultivated, almost Provençal pocket where everything is trying very hard (and successfully) to be calm. If Olympic Game Farm is chaos theater, Jardin du Soleil is intermission with lavender ice cream.

You had to look up and down every few steps to not miss something. I found it cool that they also had inspirational signs as well as ones asking questions, inviting guests to think about deeper things. Some items apparently are designed to decay with the forest. Not all items had signs to describe the art or even give it a title. You just had to roll with it.

I was reading my Frommer's guidebook to look for things to do around Port Angeles and it mentioned this place. I'm not the biggest fan of contemporary art, but this was amazing and FREE! We only spent a couple of minutes inside the fine arts center, because the outdoor sculpture garden was out of this world. Nestled under a canopy of trees were all sorts of modern sculpture, a lot of it whimsical, hanging from the trees, suspended in the air, and blending into the environment. It was everywhere and you almost felt like you were on a scavenger hunt. What a fantastic way to introduce my kids to art. We all had a blast wandering around the woods looking for the next discovery. My favorite sculpture was the collection of sweaters on a hillside (see photo).

A Memorable Stop at Camaraderie Cellars While exploring the…read morePacific Northwest in our electric car, my wife and I found ourselves in need of a charge. We were in the area to visit Olympic National Park and our car navigated us to Camaraderie Cellars as they have a charger on their premises -- and that's where the incredible hospitality began. As we pulled in, the owner came out to greet us. We waved, got out of the car, and introduced ourselves. We shared a bit about our journey -- a retirement road trip from St. Louis through the western United States, visiting as many national parks as we could along the way. For many weeks, we had been sleeping in our EV, embracing the freedom of the open road. Don, the owner, welcomed us with genuine warmth. He told us about the history of the winery and gave us a personal tour of the beautiful grounds. The place had a peaceful charm, and the curated snacks they offer pair perfectly with their wines. After hearing our story, Don said, "I have an idea. It's getting late -- and since you haven't had dinner yet -- why don't you go enjoy a great meal at a nearby restaurant called Yodelin Broth. It's healthy, delicious, and close by. Then, come back here. I'll show you around some more, and you can charge your car while you sleep. In the morning, you'll be fully charged and ready to take in all the beauty of Olympic National Park in the daylight." At first, my wife was understandably cautious. These days, you never know -- we had never been to Washington before, and Don was a complete stranger. But something about his kindness felt truly sincere. While having dinner, we talked it over. Was this too good to be true? Was it safe? My gut told me Don was genuine, and I'm so glad we trusted that instinct. When we returned, he met us in the tasting room and continued to share stories, letting us sample some of his excellent wine. We spent a relaxing hour chatting, then headed out to our car for a peaceful night's sleep. The next morning, we woke up to a fully charged vehicle, ready to explore the wonders of Olympic National Park. Of all the breathtaking places we've seen on this trip, our unexpected stop at Camaraderie Cellars remains one of the most unforgettable. If we ever return to Washington, we will absolutely visit Don and his wife Vicki again, the incredible owners of Camaraderie Cellars. Their kindness and hospitality were truly unmatched -- a shining example of the goodness still out there in the world. Camaraderie Cellars: Hospitality at its finest.
