You had to look up and down every few steps to not miss something. I found it cool that they also had inspirational signs as well as ones asking questions, inviting guests to think about deeper things. Some items apparently are designed to decay with the forest. Not all items had signs to describe the art or even give it a title. You just had to roll with it.

I was reading my Frommer's guidebook to look for things to do around Port Angeles and it mentioned this place. I'm not the biggest fan of contemporary art, but this was amazing and FREE! We only spent a couple of minutes inside the fine arts center, because the outdoor sculpture garden was out of this world. Nestled under a canopy of trees were all sorts of modern sculpture, a lot of it whimsical, hanging from the trees, suspended in the air, and blending into the environment. It was everywhere and you almost felt like you were on a scavenger hunt. What a fantastic way to introduce my kids to art. We all had a blast wandering around the woods looking for the next discovery. My favorite sculpture was the collection of sweaters on a hillside (see photo).

I spent about an hour here and it was really cool that they had themed areas. I will say that a lot of families come here with children, so that felt a little bit overstimulating at times. If you come here, try to come during off hours maybe to try and get a more quiet experience.

Well worth the nominal price of admission if you are on holiday with your kids.

They also had that 60-pounds scary ahh animatronic "Chuckesme" doll that they got rid of after one feature lolol ... they even had the werewolf cardboard stand-in that they used to cgi over for Jacob and the other werewolves featured in the movies. Something that I thought was super neat was that they used white mannequins to signify human, and grey mannequins to represent the non-human characters. There truly is not much at this museum, but they worked with what they got and made the appearance still gave me in awe. In order to go here, u need to sign in for a 15-minute time slot with the staff person at the front of the location. Come by a couple of minutes before so that you could reserve a spot. They only let 10 people total per time slot, but it is free admission! There are also a bunch of filming locations nearby by walking distance that you can check out while you wait to go into this museum. They brief you on how it will work for your museum visit, but the staff was soooo sweet. Making sure that each visitor understood the history and significance of everything and everyone featured in this museum. Increases your appreciation for the art, even if you are not a fan of the franchise, like myself. Staff is so passionate about their job that you cannot help but want to learn more about it. Lovely Pacific Northwestern indigenous art, a remarkably professional and interesting exhibit inside of local flora and fauna (including a live tank of baby salmon, which you can find adult-size in the rivers around town); friendly person manning the desk and a cafe and gift shop that are not open every day so watch out for that. We stumbled upon this hidden gem while looking for Christmas lights at the Railroad Bridge Park as…read moreit's located in the same complex - what a find!! It was closed at night when we first visited but it looked so interesting that we had to come back the next day to check it out and am so glad we did! It's surprisingly large inside with a very interesting little exhibit room which is like a nature museum - full of information and displays on all the nature and wildlife of the surrounding Dungeness River ecosystem. They're all about education and conservation here so you know how much I loved that! One of my favorite things was their display of rain gauges giving you a visual example of the staggering differences in rainfall amounts around the area - mind blowing how much rain some of these places get! They partner with the local Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society and the National Audubon Society. They offer all sorts of nature and wildlife programs, field trips and conferences, as well as birding walks and other tours. The center has a gift shop and a satellite stand from Hurricane Coffee. We tried their Happy Camper (a blackberry mocha) and their Dark Raspberry Mocha and we couldn't resist the freshly made Blueberry Coffee Cake displayed - everything was delicious! They have quite a few benches and picnic tables outside, as well as a lovely bird garden that was just teeming with local species. They even have a "bird blind" viewing area inside where you can watch in secret so as not to scare the birds - it was awesome! They have plenty of clean restrooms and a huge parking lot so there's room for everyone. The GPS brings you right to the river center - but you may get confused bc it looks like you're driving through a remote rural neighborhood- but just trust it bc it's at the end of the road lol! Once you're finished exploring the river center, be sure to pop out back and explore the historic railroad bridge over the beautiful and huge Dungeness River!! So worth it!
