Dog owners beware! A couple weeks ago we were about to head out the door for a little weekend outing and my other half really wanted to include our dog too. "Well that changes things..." We found this park on the Yelp app and as the dog was anxious to get out of the car, we stopped. It looked like a nice little park with walking paths, etc. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=UkkDL84lw3OrfbWb41XihQ There are a number of difference entrances around the park, but we entered the park near this large pergola(?) and cute statue of a little boy playing in the ocean. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=lyN0WLSNXdi_UOEQJ4zqmQ https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=-a1zpVQJued5uacGs7BWhQ It turns out there's a lot more to this 15 acre park than meets the eye. Not only is it a nice park with walking paths and benches to relax on and enjoy nature, but it's also a "natural disinfection and treatment plant", capable of handling up to 2.6 million gallons of storm water runoff per day! The naturally cleaned storm water is then used for irrigation within the park. How very cool! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=htIrZK09J3XL98GbJ3POQQ https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=3vfQ7XxM8vEW_edYpTzMYw https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=LNBrjMJm4-VN-WRJCDxulw https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=OyMo80KCRykilFh92oJN_w While walking around the park we encountered a number of mosaic statues representing the variety of wildlife which can be found in and around the park. Awesome! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=IZsqhyNiCIh8CQAY83-RHg https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=OZtX9lKgAUaxJuPMj7aVew https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=0XUTjmp6pH0XqBnp8PpNaA https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=lXJ9m9rtaLjHBT2rzSmhqw We also discovered this statue of a surfer, I assume so we don't forget we're in Malibu? https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=Cu6a8E4FETOSWc-cnhIyeA UNFORTUNATELY there is also a downside to this park, or at least there was for our dog. Yes it's beautiful, relaxing, environmentally friendly, etc, however, it's NOT a good place to bring your dog! About a week after visiting this lovely park, we discovered a blood sucking tick on my pupster! Then the next day after a VERY careful and thorough inspection, we found ANOTHER tick that was VERY fat! EWW GROSS!!! OVERALL: OK, so I've had my dog for 5+ years and this is the FIRST time he has EVER had ANY ticks! I was going to give only 2 stars because of this, but as this beautiful park is a well thought out natural water treatment plant for storm water runoff and a natural space for a variety of wild life, I'll generously bump it up to 3 stars.

This park is very lonnnnng...plenty of walkways, and wildlife statues. Dirt/sand-paved trails to walk or jog. I can see kids having fun here, and even dogs. Clean and right in the heart of Malibu! If you don't want to walk/jog along the beach, then this place is for you.

A very nice, simple park with a walking trail along the opposite side of PCH. There is a nice simple path that you can take to the outdoor mall/plaza and some cute decorations along the way. They have large animal sculputures along the path of snakes, lions etc. There is a pond in the middle of the park you can view, but nothing major to see. There is an outdoor seating area and plenty of signs to read that explain the habitat around you. It's not the green type of park you may be used to. Lots of shrubbery and water friendly plants. Overall, nothing special that I would visit specifically and take tourists to see.

Legacy Park Project, emcompasses 15 acres of coveted open space and serves as the centerpiece of Malibu's commitment to improve water quality and environment. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=dK4GkEgDcCN4yinCTGwhNA#dK4GkEgDcCN4yinCTGwhNA Typically, at most parks you expect to find large areas of grass, picnic benches, a playgound; this has none of the above. Legacy Park is landscaped beautifully with plants and flowering shurbs. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=dK4GkEgDcCN4yinCTGwhNA#ld9u_5nrePTCUamkQ4auHA http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=dK4GkEgDcCN4yinCTGwhNA#oD9LfodXdn0Y5mT7di_Hlg The pathways are named after local areas as-Coastal Bluffs & Malibu Creek with park benches along the way Large mosaic sculptures stand throughout the park of depicting Malibu's coastal habitat- Red Tailed Hawk, Wolf, Owl, Rattlesnake and Lizard. There's one piece of art that looks different from the rest-that is washed looking "Surfer" statue- http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/legacy-park-malibu?select=NRemnXGiq1w-SSHVnF53Ew#NRemnXGiq1w-SSHVnF53Ew Parking is free and there always plenty of it, except during Malibu Farmers Market (Sundays,10:00am - 3:00pm) Legacy Park neighbors Malibu Library and Malibu Country Mart http://www.yelp.com/biz/malibu-country-mart-malibu

Nicely done little deserty-looking park right next to the Malibu Country Mart. You feel like you're in the desert. it's a nice short walk for joey, landscaped with desert brush type stuff. There is some sculpture, nice touch, and a seating area at the entrance.

The Legacy Park Project is a multi million dollar, many year struggle, completed by the City of Malibu and private donors. Today what stands is 17 acres of flowering plants and shrubs with walking paths through-out. Beautiful, large statues of local animals dot the landscape marking each of the 5 habitats that are represented in this area of Malibu. There are also benches along the paths, a large pond in the middle of the park and concrete structures to sit with a semi protective awning over them. Dogs are allowed in leash and its a great place to take them. The neat thing about this park is that it is designed to filter storm water before it drains into the Malibu Lagoon and then Surfrider Beach. But the city really missed out on the opportunity to have this same system filter sewer water coming from the local Malibu Country Mart as well. I don't know for sure how well the storm water system really works are the Malibu Lagoon is still polluted. Another missed opportunity is the Education Center that they like to advertise. The are plaques throughout the park that explain each of the 5 habitats-bluffs, lagoon, creek, ocean and coastal prairie and examples of the animals and plants that live there. But there is no interactive piece to this exhibit. They could have included so many more educational materials, even an actual center that could host school groups and have dedicated programs with designed curriculum about habitat, storm water, stewardship, ecology. All the vegetation is still young. The trees are still help up by stakes and do not yet provide shade. The water level is often low and there is no running water to be heard. I have not seen any real animals depicted as living in any of the habitats. The only wildlife I've seen is ground squirrels, ducks and an egret. I'm glad this park is there instead of a parking lot, condos, more shops or even a dirt field. I just feel many opportunities were missed here. I look forward to the future of this park when vegetation is established, animals move in, water flows freely and children are educated about their environment.

It's a loop hike, and we preferred doing it clockwise. This way, the climb felt more gradual at first and gave us those rewarding canyon-top views with the canyon on one side and the ocean on the other. There's also a little waterfall and a lively stream running through the trail (we went in July, and the water was still flowing nicely). Be prepared--the ascent can be quite steep in parts, but the payoff at the top makes it all worth it. Facilities are only available at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. Dogs are allowed, but they should be kept on a leash. Parking is a bit tricky. The lot only seems to hold about 30 ish cars. I would say on the moderate / hard side.

The creek, little waterfalls (especially after rain), and the ruins tucked into the canyon make the walk interesting without feeling crowded or overwhelming. What I love most is how peaceful it feels. You get ocean air drifting in, birds everywhere, and just enough shade to make it comfortable even on warmer days. It's perfect for a relaxed hike, a slow morning walk, or taking out-of-town friends who want something scenic without a hardcore climb. Parking can fill up, especially on weekends, but once you're on the trail it's totally worth it. If you're looking for a mellow hike with history, nature, and classic Malibu vibes, Solstice Canyon is a solid choice.

So I hopped on Yelp to find a new spot that looked away from the city, and this was perfect. It was quiet and beautiful, and its simplicity was very engaging for my kids 5-8years. My husband walked on the paths for a bit and I enjoyed a spot in the sunshine as the majority of the park was shady and a bit chilly! The park and trail is tucked into a neighborhood. The only thing confusing to me was the parking lot. There was two marked spots--one for handicapped and one next to it which said 'no parking' on the ground but there was no sign on the wall in front of the spot. It seemed odd and unnecessary. Why can't people park here in the only other marked spot? Is this parking lot only for people with handicaps? Where is anyone else supposed to park--the curb on the other side that's not marked and not deep enough to be out of the way of someone backing out of the handicapped spot? Other than that, and the dirty bathroom which had what looked like a poop smear on the floor and a pile of liners and crumpled TP blocking the bowl of the women's toilet, this was a great spot to be.

We've all heard of PTSD…read more... You know, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But have you heard of PDSB?? (I'll break this one down in a bit) Well, if you've read any of my other reviews of the picturesque beaches in Southern California, your PTSD of "here we go again, another review about white sandy beaches, moderate temp. waters and picture perfect sunsets" by Lance L. just might kick in. But bear with me, because this review, you're definitely not gonna want to skip. So what is PDSB you ask? Well Point Dume State Beach of course! Yes, one of Malibu's finest & for good reason too! Sure, when everyone thinks about beaches in Malibu... For those with families, It's usually Zuma Beach, but that's where EVERYBODY goes and because of this, it's ALWAYS packed! And of course, there's where all the surfers go.... Surfrider Beach, hence the name! But Surfrider is for hangin' 10 and you just might get a big stare down by the locals. But Point Dume State Beach or PDSB as I know you will now refer to it is about to be your new favorite. Here's why: A pay lot which sounds like it sucks to have to pay just to go to the beach, but the minimal cost ($6-$15 depending the season) is worth it. The lot is literally parallel to the beach and once you park, you are right on the sand! In addition, Point Dume State Beach, although smaller than Zuma is pretty decent because it's not as well known about so you will definitely find a place to plant that umbrella and set up your beach towel to watch the kids play, throw a football around or work on your tan lines. As far as Safety, Not only is lifeguard towers right on the sand, but a lifeguard headquarters office is also onsite, so if something goes south, help is very nearby. Point Dume State Beach does have fairly maintained, public restrooms that's are serviced regularly by the beaches and harbors maintenance team as well as a few porta-potties onsite for use. The beaches themselves are clean and do not have a lot of trash, debris or tar like some of the beaches that I've been to up North on the Ventura County Side (Oxnard & Ventura beaches). And the best part, some of the best sunsets you can catch on this part of the coastline. Besides the actual beach, you can actually hike from the beach side itself up the Point Dume hiking trail to get an even better view or jump off the cliff if you dare. But.... Please, Please, Just make sure you are a solid swimmer if you are a real swimmer thrill seeker as the water near the cliff is rocky and the currents are very unforgiving. There are always calls for service where Lifeguards, Firefighters and the Sheriff's department are on scene performing rescues, but unfortunately, sometimes are unsuccessful and people have tragically drowned. So maybe leave the Olympic style diving into the Big Blue to the pros. And now that you probably have actual PTSD from me telling you how you could actually die if you aren't careful.... Maybe just shake it off and get some PDSB instead and enjoy the Best of Malibu from the safety of your seat right on the sand! "Life's a Beach, Enjoy it!"

We parked on the PCH passed Malibu Seafood (watch where you park, cops are serious in this area, they were hunting to give tickets to people when we went!). We walked into Malibu Seafood parking lot, there is a sign and you start a hike. You can check various trails, we stayed on the main path, which is tight and there is vegetation on both sides, so long pants are important as is sunscreen and water due to lack of shade. There weren't too many people, the views are incredible, the Pacific ocean shines in the horizon and Malibu coastline is gorgeous. We saw a few hawks flying above. It's way out by Trancas and just a quick drive up into the canyon from the Vintage Grocer, another store I love! So you can pop in at the vintage grocer and grab some snacks for yourself or after you get finished with the dog park you can swing down there and stop at one of the restaurants. I know Kristy's is located in the center now as well as the brewery. The location of the dog park is impressively scenic as far as dog parks go. There are canyon and ocean views. The restrooms are generally pretty clean; they've never been filthy even though they are ranger maintained public facilities. There's a really cute little kids playground that has the squishy ground, which feels so nice to walk on and then of course the gigantic soccer field. There's plenty of free parking and it's never been crowded. I have had some negative dog encounters here because it is so quiet people will sometimes bring less than fully socialized dogs here. So you have to be cautious and monitor your dog if they're not in the park alone. But that's any dog park. And as a dog owner, we owe it to our pups to monitor them. There's no cell phone service here at least for me with AT&T, but I do love the ocean views. It's really a great dog park. The picnic table is in the shade always helps us beat the heat. And although my dog doesn't jump over the little rails or going to the red tunnel, he loves that there's chaparral on the hill that he can go pee and sniff, and he loves all the trees in the park and the positioned rocks within the park. I've never experienced such ungrounded rudeness before to the point where the other ranger seemed almost apologetic in the stead of Graceyn's behavior. I understand everyone has a bad day or long shift but this was beyond that so i highly do not recommend this place for the horrible communication and service experience.
