I have known about Alberto Crane since I started training NHB back in 1999. He is as legit as they come. He has been competing in BJJ and MMA since the 90's, well before most people jumped on the band wagon. Besides being a superb competitor, he is an even better instructor. He is great at communicating the small details most people miss out on, and has an encyclopedia-like knowledge of mixed martial arts. The staff at Gracie Barra Burbank are just as wonderful, with kids, adults, and women only programs headed by a variety of instructors. They have recently expanded, and now have 3 large mat areas, a boxing ring, a cage, a weight room, locker rooms, showers, and a dedicated area for an after school program for kids. Overall, it is a great place to bring your family to enjoy the benefits of martial arts. If you are in the area, definitely check this place out! read more

I cannot say loudly enough how nice and accommodating everyone is here. Even though I have ZERO martial arts experience everyone made me feel welcome and as if I belonged. I took the offer of the free class and was really nervous since I have no experience whatsoever. The instructor and some of the students with experience helped me understand the steps and get me comfortable. They even showed me some arm bar moves and me and some of the girls got a bit silly. First off I'll say I highly respect everything about this gym. Their beliefs, how they conduct business, their staff, and students. I've been to MMA/BJJ/MuayThai gyms all over the US. I loved all but one in that time. Legacy is definitely top 3. While they conduct as a business, they still approach the students/customer like a person. I've only left that place better than when I came in. When I initially started, I was broken(disabled veteran). The baby steps I've taken to heal along the way with the training allowed my body to heal faster. I'm still very much broken, but I can walk again, i can do things without being in crippling pain. I can sleep without waking up 12 times a night. So if you're a fighter, this is a great place to grow, if you're broken/fat/inexperienced, this is a great place to heal and develop. Being a UFC fan I had always thought that it would be fun to learn BJJ. Walking through the door I wasn't sure what to expect but was greeted with all smiles. I had an outfit for Judo that i could also use for BJJ. But if I didn't have one they did have a rental. The class was very well organized. Starts out with warm ups then self defense and drilling and last "rolling" which is usually using something that you learned during class. Such as escapes for side control or mount. Main point is how friendly everyone is. I've never experienced any kind of ego or judgement. Everyone is friendly and ready to help. New members are always welcomed. I went here for about a month before I posted this review. But after a month i can say for sure that this is a quality gym. I have practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) before and can safely say that this is the place to be if you want to learn, get in shape, and have a blast in a clean academic environment. I had heard of Gracie Barra before and had the opportunity to check out the Burbank location and after I spoke to one of the coaches it was evident that they could provide both kids and adult classes with plenty of partners to chose from. Depth in class is really nice as you can always find someone your size to roll with, trust me when I say smaller schools don't have this asset. Saw the 37 days free and decided to give it a try. I was interested in the Jiu Jitsu training. Lance instructed me that I would have to start w a Intro to MMA class. I did and it was alot of fun. At the end of class is when they tell you about the deals. He shows me the different payment plans, tells me I can only come twice a week, and that I need to start w the 6 month Intro to MMA program before I can do the Jiu Jitsu. Spending $175/month or $750 up front for the 6 months, I would need to think about. Lance then starts to put the pressure on you. "This will not be available for you next time". Very rude! Thats when I walked out. They try to steer you into programs. Did all the children I saw practicing Jiu Jitsu begin with the $750 intro to MMA class? My review is specifically re: the kid classes. First, u should know some facts if u are interested in your child joining: 1) It's a $125 per month if u do month to month for 2 classes per week. I know they have a better deal if you commit and pay for 6 months or a year. I didn't want to do that being that I wanted to see if we like it. Your child can attend any "basics" class any day of the week and you can make up classes in case you can't make it twice in one week. 2) $50 reg. fee? 3) Uniform is another $100-$150 4) If u want to cancel (month to month), u have to give a month's notice. So if your child doesn't like it or if you don't, u are stuck paying for another month. Pros: -Office staff is very friendly and approachable -I met some great families who take their kids and love it -Professor Matthew is AMAZING (con: he's only there on Sundays). He has a great way of getting the kids to listen even if he's by himself with 20 kids. He teaches from the very basics of correct form to do squats/pushups, ect. He doesn't allow any half-assing or fooling around yet he's funny and playful with the kids. I enjoy watching him teach the kids because I actually learn from how he teaches. I really wish he was there more, but he's at another business the rest of the week in Encino. If we lived closed to Encino, I'd go to where he teaches full-time. -The facility is clean -They provide a free class to try. My daughter, 4 years old at the time, didn't want to give it a try. I asked if we could try a couple more before we committed and Tanner allowed us to. Cons: Considering that upfront we paid $325, our expectations were very high. So when we did our free classes, I noticed the day and night difference in teaching styles between the main Professor and Professor Matthew. I wish I knew then, before signing up, that Professor Matthew was only there on Sundays because I wouldn't have signed up my daughter. While the main Professor is friendly/approachable and fun with the kids, I don't like that the majority of the kids don't know how to do pushups/squats/jumping jacks which is part of the warm up. Most of the kids are putting lil' effort into the warm up and the Bow. They have to Bow when they get on/off the mat, Bow at the Professors and the masters on the wall. The kids slap their sides but barely fold fwd. The main Professor & the assistants don't correct them. Why? Because their Bows are the same. While I know they're there to do Ju-Jitsu, I feel that warm-up is a good way of having kids demonstrate respect/discipline and learning correct form. I take my daughter there not only to learn BJJ, but to be disciplined in her physical activity. From the start, it irritated me that the main Professor & the assistant would stand in the corner chit chatting while he had the kids warm up. My daughter didn't know how to do some of the warm up activities. I had to get up and ask him if he could teach her. Once in a while, they walk around to check their form and make sure that they're all doing it, but the majority of the time they are simply standing in a corner talking during warm up. If the Professor is by himself, he spends the warm up time filling out the attendance cards....again not focusing much on form. I realize I sound like I'm making a big deal about the warm-up, but my point is that what I do see is min. effort (incl. my child) and lack of discipline/correction with the basics ....it doesn't leave me a good impression in seeing that my daughter is progressing. When the Professor is teaching technique I don't know, he pairs them up to have the kids do it. Most of the kids don't seem like they know what they are doing and some fool around yet he and his assistant don't walk around more to make sure THEY ALL are doing the correct technique. Again, I'm comparing to what I do see Professor Matthew do. The Sunday classes are not small so class size doesn't matter. I get the impression that the Professor focuses more on the kids that may have more experience. I noticed this from day one and we stuck it out for 3 months to see if things would change. I'm disappointed because I really wanted to stick with BJJ in Burbank. We invested a lot for what I felt were average classes except the Sunday classes with Professor Matthew. If my daughter loved it, we'd stick it out but she's dreaded going from the beginning. She likes the professors and I can tell she has fun while she's there, but not enough to look forward to it. She's pretty active in gymnastics, swim, soccer, was formally in Tae Kwan Do (we pulled her out to do this), and this is the first time she expresses "dreadfulness" to go to a class. I think that was the biggest sign for us. I met a mom who has been there for a year and is pulling her kids out for the same reasons once her contract is up and is going to Professor Matthew's location. I will say though that the majority of the families do enjoy it there. read more

I have only seen this company bring their summer camp to the park and I did not like what I had seen. There was ONE counselor interacting with the kids, but two of the counselors were cuddling while watching the kids. The young boy had his arm around his girlfriend while playing on his phone. There's a time and a place for that. Instead of interacting with the kids, the young counselors were treating it as if they were on a date by cuddling! Not impressed by the company based on that alone. Whether the actual classes themselves are good, I have no clue, but wouldn't try them based on my observations of their interaction, or lack of, with the camp. read more

Awesome place! This review is specifically for the jiu jitsu classes. Classes are well run. You will have fun while you learn. Techniques are explained with enough detail and you are given a lot of time to drill and really learn everything so that you can apply it. This is not the case with all schools, some feel too rushed and by the end of the class you won't remember exactly how to do what you just learned. You are also given time to do drills and roll (spar) in every class. This is done in a safe manner and is enjoyable. The gym itself is very nice and well laid out. There is a very welcoming vibe. All the instructors and students are interested in helping you learn and become better. You will develop increased all around fitness, respect and confidence when you train here. They have classes for adults, kids and women only classes. Pricing is fair and cheaper than another school I went to. You also get unlimited classes per month which is nice. The owner Alberto Crane (who also teaches some of the classes) is a Jiu Jitsu legend and a very nice guy. I am very happy with this school. Take a free class and I'm sure you'll be hooked. In addition to the above, the school also has Muay Thai classes and a few fitness programs as well as a gym where you can workout outside of classes. read more

I trained here for almost a year and I would continue to train as long as I could if I didn't have to move. The facility is huge and there are more than enough classes to fit my schedule. But what really makes this school are the instructors. Alberto and his team are all awesome and I really enjoyed my time there. Eight months ago my husband and I were looking for a martial art to put our 5 year old son in. We checked out a few schools until coming to Gracie Barra Burbank. I knew instantly that this was the place. The dojo has a very positive energy. The people are so nice and I've learned that they all think of each other as brothers. It's like one big family. The coaches are great with all the kids. They are very nice and caring, but also put in the right amount of discipline that the kids don't treat class like a play time. They train and learn to do Jiu-Jitsu moves. I ask my son everyday if he wants to go to Jiu-Jitsu today and he always says yes. It's hard to get him out of there when it's over. Even my younger son who doesn't do Jui-Jitsu just yet wants to go everyday. We all love it. read more

I have been training privately here for about a year with Professor Matthew Polino who is a black belt. I had been looking for private training for some time and couldn't find the right enviornment until i called Legacy. Professor Alberto Crane called me right back and asked what I was looking for and recommended Matthew as my private instructor. It has been one of the best things i have ever done for myself. First off the facility is one of the cleanest and friendliest you will find. Very familial place and Alberto is always a gentlemen and knows everyone. Professor Matthew is a natural teacher. I have practiced some form of martial art most of my life and have had some great teachers but Matthew is the best. He keeps it fun and interesting but most importantly he keeps me from getting injured while i'm getting up to speed. I started not knowing anything while my little boy had also began classes as i wanted him to see me do it - hoping it would motivate him. I would always drive past legacy when one day I finally decided to walk in and sign up. I wanted to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because I always was interested in it and I also wanted to find something I would enjoy and get in shape at the same time. Honestly it was the best decision I have made in a long time, since being there I have lost 38lbs and am in the best shape of my life. I have gained a great deal of confidence in myself and have became a much more positive person thanks to all the amazing instructors and students who teach me day in and day out to keep going and not giving up. What a great place!!! Fabulous!! I just started here and let me tell you. I have been to a lot of places that ran the gambit from the cobra kai sensei to real nice guy but too small and not enough technique to what the hell is this, but her at Gracie Barra jiu jitsu and MMA everyone is so nice, wonderful, and excellent training. The black belts are great, you never get anything below brown as instructor, the sparring is good and at the right pace, not lets go at 100% and see if we can kill you. the mats are clean and not filthy, the change is clean, and this place does not I repeat does not smell like a sweat sock, and they tell to clean your kimono. They also have MMA, Muay Thai, and fitness class for strength and conditioning which I am gonna take so I can compete in no gi competitions. Great place highly recommend it. read more

I was driving into Burger King of all places when I noticed a sandwich board for an all womens bootcamp outside of a gym I'd never seen before. I looked it up and found rave reviews and a busy Facebook page for the Tough Girl Bootcamp program. The first week is free, and I was hooked! Once I signed up I also received a full physical assessment and nutrition counseling. I'm not naturally active, and hate traditional gyms, but I love it here! I love the evening classes with some morning and weekend options. The trainers are fantastic, and I am already feeling better and seeing results. One thing I actually like is that they don't offer an option to pay per class. You end up with a core group of women, some who have been coming for years. There is a real camaraderie and support system built in. I have two weddings to attend next month, but I'm sure I'll be attending long after! read more

The atmosphere is perfect for training or even getting a really good workout and having fun while doing it! The coaches are so friendly, yet tough. Since you're there to work your mind and body, that's exactly what you do! Using the yelp deal was simple and easy, and that's definitely because of the admin team!!! They were so nice and ready to help me with every question! They had so much patience and gave a great deal of attention to every one of us there! I'm one of those people who's always a bit hesitant when buying things online, but this is definitely one I would and actually have recommended to a friend! (We're starting together next week). My boys, ages 8 and 5, tried Tae Kwon Do and hated it but after one Jiu Jitsu class they were hooked. About the business I can say it's wonderful. I'm a black belt, former MMA fighter, and owner of my own gym down in Miami. I've known Alberto Crane via the tournament circuit and a year or so ago he stopped by my school in Miami and rolled with the guys. He was in town for about a week - super humble black belt, was cool enough to teach guys on the mat as if he were in his own gym, and was an all around great guy.
