After reading the great reviews and looking through the portfolios I decided to stop by and check it out before booking. I was extremely lucky that my artist/owner (Turk) was able to give me a consultation right then and book an appointment for me the next morning. Everything from the moment you walk in was excellent. The shop manager was very helpful, polite and attentive, the shop was very clean. Turk was very easy to work with as he was doing a freehand design for me. The conversation and interactions with the staff made everything very comfortable which helped in keeping the tattoo process moving along very well. Turk, the shop owner and head tattoo artist is the coolest dude ever. Of course, he's also ridiculously talented. He's super reasonable, down to earth, interesting and just a good guy. I'd go back just to sit in the chair with him for a couple hours. I got a 3/4 sleeve with him and I love it. He's a wizard with the machine. He had a super rough sketch and did all the insane work detail on-arm, on-the-fly. Don't let this scare you. Trust him and let him do what he does best. read more

Found LHB through a friend in the motorcycle world and could not be more impressed with the process and end result of an Adam Turk/LHB tattoo. I've been getting tattooed for the last 16 years and Turk is only the second tattoo artist to lay ink to my skin. The shop is more of an art gallery than a tattoo studio and is clean and well kept. LHB just had another art show ("Horror Business") and all the art was still prominently displayed on the walls in the waiting and lounge area. Cleanest, most professional and customer friendly tattoo shop I've ever been to. Turk tattooed my husband while I waited. He was friendly to both of us, did an awesome tattoo and made us feel comfortable. We had a great experience. Also, I was really happy to see how clean the place was. I've had to use restrooms at other shops that are horrible. LHB has an extremely clean work environment and the bathroom is actually spotless! I just got a new tattoo from Turk, owner of and artist at Left Hand Black. I am so amazed and pleased with it! Many years ago, I got a small tattoo on my arm. It wasn't the greatest, but it served its purpose at the time. Over the years I have grown unhappy with it's imperfections, and felt it was time to do something about it. I wanted a tattoo that I would be proud to have- not a cover-up, but rather incorporating what already existed into something larger/better. I interviewed several artists over the past year in my local area (firm supporter of local businesses!), and I found my way to Turk/LHB. He was not intimated to work around another artist's work, and he understood my desire of what had to stay, what had to go, and how I wanted the new additional tattoo to fix the previous execution with which I wasn't happy. The wait time was worth it! He reviewed drawings with me, then drew designs on my arm directly (no tracing paper or copies), and we edited it together and collaboratively. Then we got started, and about 6 hrs later I'm a new man. During the process, he was very pleasant to be with- we conversed about music, movies, current events, family. His inking style is gentle, and I swear I didn't flinch once. Very clean, very professional. Everyone in the shop was jovial and welcoming, and Brandon provided great staff support. I was in town for the holidays and decided to get my family tattoos for Xmas. I had scheduled an appointment with Chris, however, he was able to get us in a week earlier due to a cancellation. The shop is in a nice location, super clean and professional, and is probably the coolest studio I've ever been in (the decor is really awesome!) You can tell the owners take great pride in it. The staff was helpful, super friendly, and had a great sense of humor... making the 5 hours we were there highly entertaining. Just pure awesome. Chris worked fast and did an incredible job on our tattoos. He instantly made us feel comfortable and was incredibly easy to work with and talk to. The whole experience was one awesome day to remember. Instead of signing me up and taking my money they politely said they could either a) try to match or b) have to suggest I go elsewhere. I first learned of Left Hand Black when a few of their artists were doing free flash tattoos at the Game of Thrones Experience during San Diego Comic Con a few years back. It was a Saturday and I was like the 20th person out of 25 in line. It was short line compared to the non-tattoo line, but the wait was long. Initially thought that the tattoos were like spray on or something temporary. Found out otherwise after asking one of the people running event, and it took me a long minute before deciding I would stick out. I was also relieved to be informed that the artists were also doing all the cleaning and sanitation after each tattoo, which accounted for the long wait. Fast forward about five hours and I'm finally in. Really impressed with the professional conduct of the artists, especially the guy doing my Stark sigil. I wouldn't have been surprised if he was burnt out from doing all these tats back to back, but he was chill and answered all my questions, even going into how they got tapped for this weekend gig. After the experience, I resolved to hit their studio up the next time I would get a tattoo again. Fast forward a year later, I finally hit the shop with a design, and I got Chris for my tattooer. My design only had lines, but he did well and so I got another one from him later in the year, also my own design, just linework, but he did well again. The tattoo was extremely detailed, so some things were missed, but he had me come back and took care of it, completing the piece. I try to show them both off whenever possible. Now, I know haven't really utilized his full skill and creativity as an artist, but I have trouble letting go of creative control and it takes a lot for me to trust anybody. That being said though, the next tattoo idea I go in for, I'm definitely willing to consult with him on. A big step for me, so big ups to Chris, his skills and professionalism. Every generation has its great men or women: Socrates, Michaelangelo, Beethoven, Babe Ruth, Sigorney Weaver...the list goes on. If you are lucky enough to marvel at the greatness and bask in their celestial glow then you have truly lead a blessed life! I recently had such a serendipitious encounter with one such savant. As i entered the shop i first laid eyes on John and remarked at his incredible bone structure: one of god's own prototypes i suspect! Next i noticed his hair flowing as the mane of Arion! By god what a marvelous creature to behold! His voice was the sound of a siren"s: luring me to a watery grave with her divine sonnet. I must admit I trembled as he outstretched his hand to greet me, but after i gazed upon his saintly blue eyes, I was put at ease. I noted the scents of honeysuckle and myrrh but as i beheld those sweet, cobalt eyes: I swear by Oden's Raven I did witness this man change shape to a winged horse! I can't tell you how difficult it is to give this gift to the race only 5 stars, while if it were up to me, I would hand him all the stars in universe and embrace him till the end of days! Today I went in for a tattoo by Chris dykes, and am more than thrilled with the results. I am super shy and awkward and normally feel really uncomfortable around tattoo artists but he and everyone else in the shop were so nice and professional. I'm also super picky and made him redraw my idea twice (I was such a pill!) and in the end got something totally different and he was patient and understanding and did an awesome job on my piece. In the past I've not had the best luck with feeling satisfied with my tattoos (felt like the artist just said like "ya I know what you want" then gave me something totally different) and I feel like I can come here and feel confident I'll be walking out happy with what I received. I've been getting tattooed for over twenty years, and have spent many, many hours in tattoo shops over the last ten years. I've been tattooed in different shops throughout the states and while none can be considered seedy (it's up to you to pick a clean shop) Left Hand Black by far outshines all of the places I've been too. It's in a cool little neighborhood, tree lined streets and small houses. A couple nearby dining options, even a convienence store for an ATM if you come unprepared. But, all that is just a bonus to the shop itself. Beautifully put together, it is part art gallery, part curio and relic museum and all cool. Great care was put into the decor and the art on the walls is constantly changing for the regularly conducted art shows. This shop oozes with the fibe you want when you're looking for a top otch tattoo experience. High tech booking and research/reference equipment is used (Apple equipment for scheduling and time keeping) and the place is the cleanest shop I've ever been in. Period. That deserves another statement - this place is THE CLEANEST SHOP I've ever been to. Customer service is outstanding, none of the sometimes annoying tattoo tough guy antics or creepy dudes checking out girls getting tattooed. Just professional artists plying their craft. I've been three times (four if you count an initial consult) and the shop has been as pulse ant each and every time. And get this, I received a reminder phone call from shop personnel one week prior to each of my appointments. I can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

I'm not sure why I haven't left a review about this awesome place when I got my tattoo. I used to live down the street from this place, and went there in one of their first months that they opened. I wanted to get my wedding date tattooed on my wrist, as well as a small tattoo on my pinky finger. When I arrived, I had a consultation, and they advised me to not get the pinky tattoo. I'm grateful that they were honest about how it will fade and look like crap after a few years. So, we proceeded to do just the wrist tattoo. Needless to say, two years later- I still love how it turned out and couldn't have asked for a better piece of meaningful art on my body. The quality is awesome and the lines are straight and clean. I went with my girlfriend to LHB and spent all day getting tattooed by Turk. She got her 2nd forearm piece by Turk started and I was getting a cross that I got when I was 18 fixed. This cross means the world to me. It is 2 1/2 feet long, down my back and says, "Mom love always" (my mom is still alive, she just mean a lot to me). I got this when I 18 years old. My mom was away on business trip when I went and got it done and when she came back home the first time she saw it she cried. So after ten years of abuse it was looking a little faded. It was about time that I fixed it back to its proper look and completed the piece. When I got up from the table and I saw what he had done, it was like I was 18 again and seeing for the first time. I always liked the way that it came out the first time, but when I saw what Turk did I saw what I always had dreamed of in my head. I cant wait to go back and get it finished and colored in. Thank you very much Turk, you made me feel great. My Mom cried again the first time she saw the picture of your work. I will see you soon to get some more work done read more

Like others have said, this is not the stereotypical tattoo joint. Don't expect to find photocopied images of standard tattoos hanging for your choice on the wall nor sketchy looking dudes smoking cigarettes out front. Left Hand Black is immaculately clean and friendly, and while you're waiting for your custom tattoo you can browse the art gallery and collection of oddities in the lobby. Turk created a personalized tattoo from the description I gave him that was even more beautiful than I imagined. He is a true artist and one of the most stand up guys I've ever met! I wish there was a way to give LHB more than 5 stars. read more

This shop is hands down the most awesome shop in San Diego. The LHBLK tattoo crew are all amazing artists. The man that did my tattoo was Turk. Turk makes that tattoo fun and easy. He is a great artist and runs the shop very well. My tattoo took 3 sessions in total. To have this man tattoo you is well worth the wait. He is very popular and very busy so be sure to book several months ahead of time if there is a desired time you wish to be tattooed. He is a fantastic artist and is really great at helping the client hone in on what exactly they really want. My first idea that I came to him with was very vague and he gave it his best effort see if we could make something out of it, but even I agreed, that it was just not a great idea and needed much refinement. The next idea I came to him with was much more concise and thought out. I told him what I was looking to get and he said that he loved the idea and was very excited to get started on it. The tattoo in the end came out beautifully and I am so thankful that he was able to make my idea look incredibly bad ass! I plan on going back and getting many of my tattoos done there. They definitely make you like you feel like you are one of the crew there due to its fun energy and laid-backness. They are all very hard workers though! Each tattooer is incredibly talented. Very friendly and easy to talk to and will help take care you as a client. I love this shop and I will be back soon! DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME! I brought a picture to Turk at the end of December. He said he could do the tattoo and scheduled an appointment for the middle of February. I even stopped by the shop two weeks before to see if he had any sketches, but he didn't. I've been looking forward to this day for a while and then 3 hours before my appointment I get a call, not from Turk but from one of the workers at the shop saying that Turk "doesn't want to do the tattoo anymore". NO, he didn't reschedule, he flat out refused to do the tattoo anymore. He said that Turk started some sketches "last night" and he didn't come up with anything that fit his style and what I wanted. I asked if I could at least look at some of the sketches to decide maybe I'd still like it and the response back was "Sketches are for the sketch book. No one can see them but the artist." I found this very unprofessional, not only to not contact me personally to explain the situation, but also to give me no notice whatsoever about him not desiring to do the tattoo. I WASTED 2 months waiting to get this tattoo and all I get in return was a 2 minute conversation with one of the worker who could agree that it was a pretty crappy thing to do but could give no solution to the situation. The solution was "Yeah I know it sucks...Sorry." I would NOT recommend this shop AT ALL unless you are fine with risking the artist ditching you on the day of your appointment. read more
