The building is beautiful. There are computers available for use, and the self-check out is very handy. The location is also very nice for the surrounding neighborhood. The Leesville Community Library is very close to the local school, so it makes it a hub for many children and teens. So if you were looking for quiet, this place is not for you. But if you need a library to hang out at after school, this place is for you.
For the half hour that I was there today, I didn't find any books that really interested me (there selection is actually rather small compaired to some of the other libraries in the area). I also found the noise level to be, well, suprising for a library. My biggest turn off though was the staff. Apparently they all seem to be used to being "glorified babysitters" being so close to the school, because they treat everyone like small children.
If you were hoping to have a snack while you study, don't come here. They do not allow any kind of food or drink in the library. If this doesn't bother you, great. If it does, be warned. This is actually a point of serious concern for the staff. I witnessed on of the librarians stop helping two adults find what they needed to chastise to girls studying quietly and doing homework because they had soda cans. So clearly the "no food and drink" rule is a priority.
I also witnessed a young man politely request to borrow a calculator from the help desk. The librarian clearly was untrusting and feared loosing their precious dollar store calculator, because she grilled him regarding what he had to give her as "collateral" so she could make sure wouldn't steal it. She asked specifically for a cell phone (if he had one of those why would he need the calculator), car keys (kid was clearly too young to drive), ipod (I wouldn't hand my ipod over either), driver's license, etc. When he responded no to each of those things, the librarian clearly upset rolled her eyes and remarked "Just make sure you bring it back." So. If you forget your calculator, please make sure you bring the appropriate ransom items with you to borrow one.
Overall, I was very unimpressed with the staff's attitude. I understand that they probably work around young people most of the time, and that creates a certain mentality to handle that, but in general I found most of the staff pretentious, and for lack of a better word, snooty.
So if you are looking for a local library, and this one doesn't really seem to be for you (I know it isn't for me) and don't mind the drive a few minutes down the road, the Cameron Village location is excellent (and close to colleges so the selection is more geared towards adults), the Duraleigh location is just minutes away, and while small is again geared towards a more adult crowd, and my personal favorite is the West Regional Library (which is also located near a school, but they are all friendly there, and they have a VERY LARGE selection of books for everyone). read more
