I took a cuckoo clock here to get an estimate for repair. The clock worked but would occasionally…read morestop running so it likely just needed to be oiled or adjusted. An older gentleman took the clock and told me to come back in twenty minutes. Exactly twenty minutes later I went back to the store and I asked him what the story was. He took one look at me and the expensive handbag I carry and said "$450." I was shocked. I asked him what was wrong with the clock. He was unable to provide me with an explanation other than "the guts need to be replaced." This is not an antique clock that is a 100 years old. It is a German Hubert Herr clock that was purchased brand new, eight years ago. Anyone that works on clocks that knows what they are doing will be skilled in taking the clock apart and only replacing what is necessary. Because the clock was running and he failed to provide me with any sort of explanation as to what was wrong and why the price was $450, I felt he assessed me as a person who has unlimited means and therefore was likely to pay the $450 without further scrutiny. The clock cost $400 eight years ago, brand new, when I purchased it. For what he wanted to charge me I could purchase a brand new clock from Hubert Herr in Germany! Upon taking the clock back home, I did not see any signs of the dust on the clock top being very disturbed from handling and examination. I question whether this man even opened up the clock at all! He also did not remove the weights from the bags I had put them in, which tells me he did not hang up the clock and test it, either. The bottom line is that I felt this person saw this as an opportunity to take advantage of a woman and there is no way I would take anything to this business for repair!
