Although there are still some smaller radio stations out there attempting to fend for themselves,…read morethe majority are now part of much bigger groups. Radio Aire is no different. As part of the Bauer empire, Radio Aire has been known well throughout Leeds for many years now. Gone are the EMAP hey days and now it's at a cross roads attempting to recover a major strangle hold in the market. You'll find a good selection of new and chart based music and a decent array of presenters. Indeed, they do have the once of Radio 1 fame, JK and Joel on their flagship breakfast show, so personalities certainly aren't lacking on air. Through in loads of competitions, good news coverage and some sport too and it's another healthy option for the Leeds radio market. It's more rocky than Galaxy and more contemporary than Real so if that's your bag, you are in the right place. You can also check out their website for more news and information although I do struggle with image downloads from time to time, which is a minor black mark.

The annoyingly happy early birds would tweet on about trivial rubbish and cause me to glare over at the cheap system they were blaring from imagining if I would lose my job if it were to accidentally fall off the shelf. However, grumpy b*tch aside, their selection of 90's pop classics often had me grinning and dancing around the kitchen whilst grating cheese (how apt). Not everyone is as grumpy as me, and as far as commercial radio stations go they definitely do the job. The morning presenters are JK and Joel who were previously hosts of a show on Radio 1 and are quite knowledgeable when it comes to commercial music of the last 20 years. I just can't stand stations that repeat the same track about 100 times a day, which Radio Aire is unfortunately guilty of.

I personally, think my own CD is pretty damn fly but even I need a change and some banter to get me in the spirit of things. So if that's what I want, I lock into Galaxy. From it's early conception as Kiss FM, Galaxy has grown from strength to strength. It's brand is massive now it takes a big chunk of market share in the Leeds area. That's because it does what it says on the tin, loves music. You'll get plenty of tunage for your money as well. The DJs will make sure of that. The only downside is that the rotation policy can get a little tedious so if you plan to listen for a while, you may hear repetition and it does all become a little samey at times. They are great for getting you in the mood at a weekend though with a good selection of shows and some seriously upbeat music. I also love Simon Hirst in the morning and find their style of humour very much to my taste. It's quite a bit younger than the other options in the area and if you're scared of the facebook generation then this probably isn't for you. If you want a steady stream of foot tapping party songs and the latest chart music though, it most certainly is.

The BBC really still is a fore runner in trying to give us back some value for money and in terms of local BBC radio, Radio Leeds is up there with the best of them. Situated in one of the North's hubs of BBC land, they are proud purveyors of local information and comprehensive coverage. Whether it's news or sport, you'll usually get a good smattering of it across the board. With many commercial stations cutting back on their speech content and locally sourced programmes, you'll get live football coverage, rugby league and even gardening tips should you so need them. The news and travel is also spot on and at regular intervals so you'll mostly be at least on a par with the latest going ons if you give them a listen. The music isn't to everyone's taste and if you listen to the radio just for that it's probably not your first dial stop, but for information that really is local you'll be hard pushed to better it.
