Key103 is a quality radio station. Cool is what its not, but damn fun is what it is. Located on…read moreCastle Quay between Deansgate and Castlefield, Key103 is linked to MagicFM, whose Manchester branch is right next door. As well as classic r'n'b tunes and all the latest chart hits, Key103 also specialize in football. As they pride themselves on being Manchester's real local radio station, they always air both the Manchester United and the Manchester City games. They do this through their link with Magic, by airing one game on each channel, if they're playing at the same time. Located in a picturesque setting on the canal just across a bridge from the famous Dukes92 and BarCa, Key103 base is also worth a visit. Its next to a nice bar, called Lava, which is lesser known but in my opinion better than Dukes on a rainy day.

Key 103 is almost exactly like Real Radio. It's poppy, it's loud, it's happy and it's Real's worst…read moreenemy in the competition stakes. Come on, GMG and Bauer hate each other, we media-savvy geeks all know this. It runs so deep that radio jobhunters even leave Bauer and GMG stations anonymous on their CVs. I know this. Talk about going over to the dark side... Formerly Piccadilly Radio, it was born in 1974 and became the Key we know in 1988. It broadcasts in Manchester but covers pretty much the entire North West, as I found out on my coach trip from Liverpool Airport to Manchester. You'll get what's in the charts, that's for sure, with the occasional tacky classic thrown in for good measure. Not what I'd personally choose to tune into, but hey, if everybody looked the same, we'd all get tired of looking at each other. Wait, that doesn't quite work...

I personally, think my own CD is pretty damn fly but even I need a change and some banter to get me in the spirit of things. So if that's what I want, I lock into Galaxy. From it's early conception as Kiss FM, Galaxy has grown from strength to strength. It's brand is massive now it takes a big chunk of market share in the Leeds area. That's because it does what it says on the tin, loves music. You'll get plenty of tunage for your money as well. The DJs will make sure of that. The only downside is that the rotation policy can get a little tedious so if you plan to listen for a while, you may hear repetition and it does all become a little samey at times. They are great for getting you in the mood at a weekend though with a good selection of shows and some seriously upbeat music. I also love Simon Hirst in the morning and find their style of humour very much to my taste. It's quite a bit younger than the other options in the area and if you're scared of the facebook generation then this probably isn't for you. If you want a steady stream of foot tapping party songs and the latest chart music though, it most certainly is.

Came from out of town to see a concert here me other night. Spent a few hours in the cafe…read morebeforehand. The security guards at the concert were really nice, for the most part. I noticed one of them got irrationally aggressive at the end of the concert. The singer threw his shirt into the audience at the end of his set, and a few people had a grip on it and were tugging at it. It didn't seem too violent until the security guard jumped in. Other than that, I felt they did a good job protecting the artist and band while being respectful of the crowd. Before the concert started, I even noticed them watching YouTube videos of previous concerts from the same band so they could get an idea of what to expect... I was impressed by that. The cafe was OK. Seats were comfortable, but seemed worn out. I enjoyed the big windows that looked over the ice rink. Wifi isn't free; it costs £1 a day. Bathrooms... Wash closets... Toilets... Whatever... were clean and in good repair. I found the man working at the cafe during the day to be disrespectful. There was no meat served that day, at the request of the artist. Instead of explaining this to the customers that someone missed ALL of the posted signs about this in a decent way, he complained and made it clear how he found it ridiculous of the artist to request that , and sounded mocking. It got irritating hearing him make the same remarks to everyone. The two women working at the merch table were really nice and had bubbly personalities. The stage was pretty high; i'd guess it is about 7'... Maybe 7.5'. The barrier had to be further back than usual so the front row would be able to see.

But I am pleased to say, the gig was fantastic (Queen!!) and the venue definitely played its part by delivering an electric atmosphere. Handy bar at the back of the standing area, means you don't miss any action while getting your drink!
