I was a little reluctant to come try them but I figured it's nice to have an option for takeout on dishes you usually make yourself without the prep or cleanup. The reviews were good so my husband and I came for an early dinner. The place was packed, the line was going out the door and the scents were very tantalizing. The lady that was running the production line was a force, yelling out orders with such enthusiasm and energy creating that New York style atmosphere that the restaurant is named after. Her name is Marina and she's absolutely a vibe - found out she's the owner! You get a selection of two meats or one fish, two sides, soup and a drink. I ordered a fried chicken meatball, pirog with chicken and potato, potato pirogy, with saurkraut salad. Everything tasted exactly as it should, flavorful and cooked correctly. I'm Russian/Ukrainian/Jewish so trust me, I'd know what each dish "should" taste like! Glad I found my new place that I can trust catering to my family to, and passing it off as my own jk. Not really though.

We came at an awkward hour between lunch and dinner and were able to get seated right away. I got the tuna poke bowl, which I enjoyed. My husband got the Monday special of all you can eat fish and chips. Our waiter underestimated him and didn't think he would be able to get a second helping. Nonsense, and he could've gotten a third if he really wanted to! We capped it off with some key lime pie. Not the best I've ever had but definitely enjoyable. The atmosphere is beautifully coastal with plenty of natural light. The staff was lively, friendly, and helpful. Definitely check them out!

We both ordered the special beef pho, I ordered with double meat. It came with a plate of veggies/toppings. We shared the dumplings which were really good. We also had the flan for dessert and the 5 layer dessert (was it 7 layers? I can't remember) which has jellies, cream, shaved ice, sweet beans of two types and gelatin. It was not too sweet, difficult and messy to eat, and nothing I've ever had before. I would say it's a locals kinda thing. It's good but I would not order it again. The flan was as expected- smooth and delicious. I didn't finish my soup. They packed it up perfect with the veggies/toppings on the side and the broth separate from the meat. The container was spill proof. Lots of parking. Bathrooms were clean. Restaurant is busy and could be a little cleaner but it has an open, casual atmosphere.

Sam's Subs in Port Charlotte -- A True Mom-and-Pop Gem!…read more Sam's Subs is one of those quaint, locally owned food spots that you're so happy to discover! They serve high-quality sandwiches, homemade soups, delicious baked cookies, brownies, and cheesecake. We stopped in for cold sandwiches and were pleasantly surprised to find that French fries or fried mushrooms were available as side options. And let me tell you... everything was delicious! The fries were crispy, hot, made fresh, and the meat was a hearty portion. What made our visit even more special was getting to meet the owner and enjoy a personal visit while we dined. You can truly feel the pride and care that goes into this little shop. And one detail that really stood out to me: the walls are dedicated to the true heroes who wear dog tags. It adds such a meaningful and heartfelt touch to the atmosphere. I highly recommend stopping by Sam's Subs if you're in Port Charlotte! I'll definitely be back to try some of their other subs and club sandwiches. And yes... a special order for extra-crispy bacon on my club sandwich? Absolutely! Great food, great people, and a place with heart.
