Second time I've been there, first time I had to seek out help. Second visit yesterday and I was followed around by an employee, suggesting I was up to something vs not being very familiar with the store and browsing aisles. Staff was less than friendly. I will never go there again. read more

Good liquor store. Great beer selection. Helpful and friendly staff. Perfect place to pick up a sixer and a shot after work, a tall boy for the train into the city, or a finer bottle on the way to a dinner party or birthday. They do parties and deliver kegs. read more

With other options so close by, I would never put up with the poor treatment I received here again. I asked for a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau (it's July, and yes I know its released in November) and was told I was basically out of my mind to think it was available after autumn by all the staff (and a customer felt free to chime in as well.) It's cool not to carry something, to be out of stock but to treat me like crap for asking was just not necessary. Ironically my husband found a bottle at Seven Seas in Stamford the next day -- so much for it being preposterous to get it in July. Anyway, its a small, dark place that seems to only appreciate their long-term customers. If you are reading reviews that is probably not you -- so don't go in, you will not be welcome and god forbid you are a woman. If you are a pretentious jerk you might love it. The place right down the road in the same strip of Noroton Heights shopping is very friendly and a nice environment - cheaper too. read more

I've been MUCH, MUCH happier with Leary's than the "place down the street" that one reviewer referred to. In fact, it's not even close how much differently I have been treated by the two establishments. I would say that, to me, Leary's is strictly a place I go to buy wine (I think that's what they want to cater to mostly anyway) and I've been impressed with their selection, knowledge, and pricing. They have some decent beer to choose from if you are in a pinch, and same with the hard liquor, but I'd recommend them for wine. read more

Finally lost my patience with this place. Not going back. They're frequently out of items. Last time they told me "no one in the area has any", tried to talk me into a substitute, but I found what I wanted at the next store I checked. A month ago, they recommended some specialty beer for a house guest which I bought, and now today they were giving me a hard time for returning the bottles. First the guy told me they don't accept them. When I pointed out I had bought them there, he then said they weren't rinsed. I told him I had rinsed every one of them myself. Then he asked me if I was going to buy something and I said yes. He told me "we'll work something out" in a nasty tone. What does that mean? They sold me this specialty beer and I can't return the bottles anywhere else and they're giving me a hard time about it? The laughable thing is that I did try to return them in a bunch of machines first because I knew they were going to give me a hard time. Why should I shop at a place I dread going into? I have a friend who won't shop there for the same reason. Now I get it. It's such a hassle to do business there. read more

I disagree with the above negative review. I can't say that it didn't happen, but it is probably an aberration. I've found the sales personnel in Leary's to be both friendly and helpful, and they're very decently knowledgeable. The store reflects its clientele, meaning that it can cater to both very deep-pocketed and less. There's a generally good selection in virtually all categories. read more
