I would recommend Learning Rx - Fairfax to anyone. From a very early age, I could tell that there just was not something right with how long it took my son to process information and his lack of logic and reasoning skills. As he grew older, these deficits became more apparent and more concerning. When we found Learning Rx and read the literature about the science behind the program and observed how they trained the individuals, we were willing to invest in the possibility that this might make a life changing difference for him.
From the beginning, the director and staff were extremely warm and accommodating which made my son look forward to attending his sessions, so much so, that by the end of his program it was very difficult for him to realize his program was complete. The brain training program was extremely challenging. My other sons, husband, and I even sat in on a few sessions to gain a greater understanding of what he was doing. None of us could believe how difficult the tasks were and how well he could do them. Just like physical therapy retrains a weak muscle and pushes the patient just enough to make progress so Learning Rx targets certain portions of the brain just enough to gain a little more ground. Even though my son was tired from school each day, he wanted to do his best at the "games" and please his trainer so he worked hard. He was motivated by the improvement he could see he was making in his training each day.
I was skeptical about the gains that could be made and whether the center might try to make them appear better than they truly were. I was anxious to see the reevaluation results but thought that perhaps what I might see along the way might be even more telling. Like the program says, we did not see much change until after the first half of the program. The most striking change our son witnessed at school was the drastic improvement in his reading speed. He went from make 20-30% on timed reading comprehension tests to 90-100% on the same type of tests that had by that time increased in difficulty. Because his processing speed had improved so drastically, he was able to read the passages and answer all the questions. At home, we noticed he was completing his homework faster as well as communicating more fluently with less drag time in his conversation. He was able to process what other people said in a timely fashion rather than always being one to two steps behind in the conversation. His confidence grew in more ways than one.
Besides many other improvements we personally witnessed, the reevaluation report confirmed that he had indeed made significant improvements in all the targeted areas, some being greater gains than had been predicted. His graduation from the program was an emotional celebration of his perseverance. His trainers, three brothers, father and I read letters of admiration for all he had accomplished through the many months of his brain training program. It felt almost as monumental as a high school graduation in many ways.
We still go by and visit our friends at Learning Rx. I encourage you to at least get evaluated and see what the needs may be and whether the Learning Rx program might be a good fit. The investment we made in our son has certainly been life changing. read more
