We chose foie gras, for me, the goat cheese salad for my wife, followed by filet mignon, which was pork , not beef, but in a sauce with sliced apples on a bed of fried potatoes "paillasson sauce and cider and mushrooms." Had I looked more closely I could have ordered the Prime Rib of beef instead, but our meal was delicious anyway. The service was much friendlier than my last trip to France, 50 years ago, but that was not at this restaurant.

The ones we ordered off the menu were tasty with a large portion of fries. The fries are classic English chips, solid in that regard. In summary, the burger and fries were solid, tasty and filling. But I found the charming grace of this joint to be the operator. He was special. I recommend to anyone looking for a quick, informal, inexpensive burger meal.

The only exit was through an archway into a tiny park. On the far side of that was a road across the stream which runs through the town. It was at that point that we found Le Garde Manger. We were all hungry and tired, their menu looked appealing, so we asked for a table. This restaurant is part of a small hotel on this corner, it seemed. They probably had indoor seating, but it was a nice evening and we took a table under an umbrella on the patio. It was fairly crowded. It seemed popular with both tourists and locals, as we hear both English and French and nearby tables. I think our dishes included an omelet, a sandwich, and a salad. I had the salad, which was more of a plain vegetable variety. The menu listed one that included 'gizzards' (which apparently is a regional favorite here) but I opted to go gizzard-free. Everyone enjoyed their food. It was a very pleasant dining experience in the heart of the historic area of Bayeux. I'd consider returning here if I were in the area.
