About 15 miles from Marseille is a beautiful fishing village called Cassis. Is it just me or have I accidentally gone to the worst restaurant in Cassis if not all of France? After driving through Marseille, where we should have had lunch, we went to Cassis which is like a compressed Sausalito, CA. Hills, homes, hotels, restaurants, bars and boats. In Cassis, Le Perroquet stands alone, I'm sure. We arrive, six of us, but they can't figure out which 2 tables for 6 outside to seat us at. "Une table pour six s'il vous plait" How hard is that? Finally we sit. Wait, wait, wait. I grab the person who seems to know something and he is not French, speaks a little english and gets us a waiter. We order drinks. Wait, wait. Then all of a sudden it gets windy and cold and we want to move inside. This causes a minor international incident but we are seated inside. It's nice inside. They manage to get us served about a half an hour later. Not too bad. The food is a nightmare. Mussels, their special of the day, were cooked and marinated in salt the day before and then microwaved. Served dry in a large bowl with a salt solution on the bottom. They come complete with cracked shells from microwaving and beards still attached and that "special" of the day's rubbery, leather texture. The person next to me ordered a pizza with an egg. Kind of unusual if your from The U.S. but why not. The pizza was served cold and the egg is raw. Yes, not cooked. Raw. We can't find a waiter because they are outside smoking. Two others ordered mussels, another ordered "Dorado" which was a little mushy and my better half ordered a fish soup. It did not look good. She said it was but has been known to eat big fish or lamb eyes that pop in your mouth when you eat them. Note to Le Perroquet: have your wait staff stop taking smoking breaks in the middle of service and pay attention to what they are serving, like raw eggs on cold pizza and you might have a starting point to turn your sinking ship around. read more
