Single best vegetarian restaurant I've been to in my life. I went to two different locations…read morebecause I couldn't believe it was so good. A buffet with fifty or so super fresh offerings at a great price. They say they're the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. Maybe. I'd check China and India.

Yelp Review 2026 #64:…read more I'm not vegetarian and definitely not vegan. But I will dabble with the veg from time to time. Hiltl is popular for being the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world. Here's information I will share that I wish was available before planning to come here. You must make a reservation for lunch/ dinner because that's when they're busy. Breakfast is for walk-ins and they don't do reservations. Hop on their website and be sure you're on the right location because they have several within a 2-mile radius...some on the same street. I went here to try their breakfast buffet. I wasn't sure how busy they got for breakfast so, I got here at 6:30am because I got the wrong information online! They open at 7am. Different locations have different hours. Check their website for actual hours and don't trust review site information because it's wrong! They're not busy for breakfast at all. There's 2 ways to do their buffet. You can pay a fixed price and fill your plate multiple times or go and fill your plate once and pay based on the weight of your food - you get free bread. I did the pay-by-weight option. I have a whole day of eating planned so, I wasn't about to fill up for breakfast. When they opened at 7am, they were still putting the food out one by one. By 7:20, all the food was out which was fine. I was in no rush. The spread includes fresh fruits, cheeses, butter, margarine, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, mango mousse, mango chia pudding, banana chocolate brownie crumble, a pear dessert (with cream, vanilla and orange), rosti, scrambled eggs, potato salad, tomato and mozzarella salad, beets, chickpeas, olives, couscous, corn salad, olives, asparagus, green peas, feta cheese, hardboiled eggs, curry salad, dolmades, broccoli and edamame, artichoke salad, bulgur salad, tabbouleh, orecchiette tofu salad, Thai salad, hummus, guacamole, muhammara, etc. They have 6 types of bread. Slice a piece and toast it yourself. Vegan and vegetarian food tend to taste strongly of coconut/ coconut milk and I don't like that. My favorites from the buffet include chocolate mousse, mango mousse, banana chocolate brownie crumble, dolmades, asparagus, orecchiette tofu salad, and Thai salad. I got a mango lassi to drink which I didn't like. It had curry powder. Service was pleasant. The restaurant was clean.

Another Freiburg hipster cafe, this time right on the other side if the train tracks from the…read morealtstadt side. Situated in a residential area an opens at 8 already. I was there at 8.30ish and compared to cafes in Stockholm (or other large Swedish cities) it was quite empty. Giving the impression that Germans seem less keen on having breakfasts out. The different breakfasts I chose were really lovely in their own way. No1 was coffee of choice, freshly squeezed orange juice and breadroll with hummus and marinated artichokes. Lots of flavours and very very filling so lunch wasn't really an option that day. The no2 breakfast on the menu was coffee of choice, fresh juice and fruit muesli with non-dairy milk products of choice. Nice and breakfasty as expected. Unfortunately the coffee was the only negative both days, most cafes that use soy milk in Germany do it very well, Huber doesn't quite master the art and the soy cappuccino resp latte had an unfortunate soy tang. (Different baristas.) I would have loved to try their lunch options too, but time didn't permit. Also beware that the kitchen is open in the middle of the cafe and the ventilation isn't very effective. Your clothes and hair will most likely smell of fried onion and cabbage when you leave the place after breakfast. Friendly staff. Cash only.

GREAT for a coffee, for lunch or for a snack. Their attention for details and the originality of of…read morerecipes is something rather unique in Freiburg. Great cakes (often vegan), but also main dishes for lunch are worth trying.

DON'T RECOMMEND AT ALL!!! Stay away from this restaurant! Take a look at the other lowest rated…read morereviews! This was the worst meal I had during my trip to Switzerland. My friend and I both ordered the exact same dish, chicken biryani. While I was eating, I noticed that my dish had very little chicken in it. My friend noticed that I wasn't eating and asked why. I told her that there wasn't enough chicken in my dish and that I didn't feel like eating just the rice. She then said that she had more chicken pieces in her dish and asked if I wanted some. I said no because I didn't want to take chicken from her dish. We ordered the exact same dish and paid the same price, so I expected the chicken portion to be reasonably comparable. But as you can see in the photo, her dish visibly had more chicken than mine. Mine was overwhelmingly rice with only a few small pieces of chicken. I don't understand why the portions were so different, but a chicken biryani shouldn't feel like you're paying 27 CHF mainly for rice. A chicken dish should actually have a reasonable amount of chicken in it. The restaurant employees/owner also saw that I wasn't eating and that most of the food was still on my plate. When we asked for the bill, I did mention that my dish only had a few little pieces of chicken and that I didn't want to eat just the rice, which was why I wasn't eating. Even after I explained that, they didn't apologize or offer to make any adjustment to the charge. I honestly wish I had spoken up earlier, when the staff came by and noticed that I wasn't eating, instead being upset and unhappy to be having so much for a chicken biryani that barely had any chicken! I also did not like the mint flavor in the biryani. I have never had biryani with mint in my entire life. I cook biryani myself and eat it often, including Indian, Bengali, and Pakistani versions, and this was the first time I had ever seen someone add mint to biryani. For me, the flavor just didn't feel like it went together. My friend is Vietnamese, and she mentioned that mint is used more commonly in the cuisine she is familiar with, so she didn't mind it. But personally, I did not enjoy the mint in the biryani. The chicken biryani was 27 CHF, and the soda was 4.00 or 4.50 CHF. The total came to exactly $40. I paid $40.36 for a meal that I felt was not properly served, especially when I received only a few pieces of chicken in a chicken biryani dish that cost 27 CHF. I don't think a 27 CHF chicken biryani should feel like you are paying mainly for rice. There was also a misunderstanding when we paid. My friend ended up putting the charge on her card because she thought I hadn't taken out my card, even though I had my e-wallet and card ready on my phone. I honestly wish I had been the one to make the charge on my card because I would have at least had the option to try to dispute the charge. Since the charge was made on my friend's card, I can't do that. I really regret not addressing the portion issue sooner and more directly. I did eventually explain why I wasn't eating when we asked for the bill, but I was disappointed that there was no apology or attempt to make any adjustment to the charge.
