Our server told us that this previously a cave. How often do you get to dine in a cave? The inside of the restaurant is of this stone like space. We were immediately captivated. While it does not currently have a Michelin rating, we were told it previously had a Micheline rating. The atmosphere is that of a cave...cool, a little damp, and intimate. San Guiseppe has wine cellar, according to staff, date back. We felt totally and complete immersed in history and that was only the building. centuries of Sienese life. The cuisine honors Tuscan tradition while elevating it through precision and care. Each dish showcases excellent ingredients and confident execution, embracing regional flavors rather than reinventing them. San Guissppe feature traditional dishes such as handmade pasta, rich sauces, and tenders meats showcasing distinct flavors with bold seasoning. We order lasaguna and cheese salad...absolutely superb! Our servers were superior...waiting on you hand and foot. You did not ask for anything as it was already there. Our server, Marco, was kind, humorous and knowledgeable. Since it was our first time to the restaurant he was super patient and informative regarding menu items. La Taverna di San Giuseppe has s long-term Michelin recognition for a reason...superior food and excellent service in a very unique space. We savored every bite and sip we consumed in San Giuseppe. The place is owned and carefully attended by the brave crew of ladies - Susanna [the owner], Eleanora [her daughter], and Arianna [the waiter]. Translating 'pesce povero' from Italian will leave you perplexed. The literal meaning of 'fish of poor' is playfully deceiving. L'Anciua presents a very different angle of sensory & visuals [see photos] in a designed simplicity -- modest in execution, rich by concept, with modern twist of the meaning to a 'fisherman dinner'. If you are not very adventurous then you might not like it. The woman who runs the restaurant is extremely charming. if you go on a weeknight the pace will be slow and you can interact with her. On a weekend you must have a reservation, and you must go to either the 7:45 or 9:30 seating. The place will be very busy and you will get a good look at how it operates, which is pretty interesting. But you won't be able to interact with the owner and that is too bad. Our waitress was kind of the opposite of her - just trying to get her job done and nothing else. We went twice and we loved everything. The pasta dishes are excellent but filling. One time we both ordered the 20-euro menu, which came with four appetizers and a pasta dish for each of us. The other time we ordered one 20-euro menu and one 30-euro menu, which meant that we also had a plate of fried anchovies in addition to the two plates of pasta. I don't normally like fried fish - in fact it's normally about the least appetizing thing I can imagine. But it turns out that fresh anchovies, lightly coated in flour and then fried, are amazing. If I were going back again, I think I would go for two 20-euro menus and have pasta with one of them and fried anchovies in the other. We arrived slightly early and were joyfully greeted by our host (possible owner?). He let us choose where we wanted to sit, and were happy to accommodate us wanting to sit outside. He and his female coworker went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, giving recommendations for food and wine, sharing the history of the town, even found a brochure of an artist whose piece we were admiring in the restaurant. The food and wine were delicious. We shared a cacio e pepe croquette-type appetizer with prosciutto and fig jam. So unique and delicious. We then had their gnocchi with pesto of the day-today being a black cabbage pesto, and wild boar ragu pappardelle. Again, both delicious. We finished with their tiramisu which was hands down my favorite since being in multiple areas of Italy for 2 weeks. All of the food was so fresh, unique, and extremely well priced. Along with the delicious meal, the kindness and engagement of the staff puts this restaurant above the rest. When I return to Italy this will be a priority stop for sure.
