1 Star (really less) - Pickwicks in Beaune Has Hit Rock Bottom…read more What an absolute disgrace. Pickwicks in Beaune, once a passable--if overpriced--spot, has deteriorated into a miserable, hostile joke of a venue. And at the center of its downfall? A doorman named Florian, whose arrogance, rudeness, and sheer incompetence make him the worst kind of gatekeeper. This place used to have some redeeming qualities despite the steep prices, but now? It's a shell of its former self. The atmosphere is stale, the service is nonexistent unless you enjoy being treated like an inconvenience, and the so-called "hospitality" is outright hostile. Florian, in particular, deserves a special mention for being an insufferable, power-tripping piece of work. If his job is to make people feel unwelcome, then congratulations--he's excelling. His attitude alone is enough to make you walk away, but if you do somehow get in, expect overpriced drinks served with an eye-roll and the ambiance of a dying pub that doesn't even realize it's already six feet under. Save yourself the frustration. Pickwicks is not worth your time, your money, or your patience. There are far better places in Beaune where you'll actually be treated with basic decency.

The dishes were beautifully plated, the staff was friendly and attentive, and the setting is charming. Prior to my starter, we were served and amuse bouche of tomato and strawberry gazpacho with cream and Parmesan shavings. Not only was it beautiful, but the pairing was interesting and delicious. This was followed by my starter of frog legs, which were lovely and also completely delicious. My main course was a blue lobster with pea purée, which was aesthetically pleasing but not as memorable as my other dishes. However, I still enjoyed it and are every bite. The chef then prepared a chèvre and white chocolate with black currant cheese course that was special from the kitchen and absolutely gorgeous. I finished with the beet root and white chocolate dessert with balsamic ice cream which was unique and satisfying without being too sweet. Every dish I ate was almost too beautiful to eat and our sommelier helped choose 3 wines that would compliment our meals best from their extensive wine list. Even the butter for the bread is exceptional. I wish every meal could be this special and beautiful.

It could be seen as a "destination" restaurant if you're not staying in the immediate area, but it's really not that far, and it's very much worth the trip. In the restaurant, which is decorated with sleek, white walls, there are large format photographs mounted throughout. These are really great, almost ironic, close up pictures of the local white Charolais cattle. Reservations are mandatory, as sometimes it's closed for special events. Rather, the chef and owner are away cooking at pop-up events, as near as I can tell from what others explained. In any case, after a couple of misses, we felt very fortunate to be able to eat there near the end of our stay in the area. The atmosphere was absolutely buzzing, with a feeling that everyone in there felt fortunate to be partaking of the excellent cuisine on offer. I had a beef dish cooked with a mushroom (cep) sauce, and the combination with the bottle of velvety Monthelie was beyond description. I think it was the best meal of the trip.

Dinner for 2. -…read moreAmbiance (4/5) Incredibly cute French countryside outdoor dining. Minus 1 star for the excessive mosquitoes and proximity to the street, where the occasional siren startled. - Service (5/5) Although I couldn't always understand the server's description of the food, it made for an authentic experience. And as you would expect from a Michelin restaurant, service was impeccable. - Bread (5/5) Really amazing crunchy bread. I could've sat there and happily munched on bread all evening. - Tasting Menu, 85€pp - Various amuse (4/5) A carrot/fish croquette was my favorite. The tartare packed quite a punch for the little bite. - White Aparagus, Lardo, Herbs (4/5) Really crunchy asparagus, a bit overshadowed by the homemade lardo, which I found a bit rubbery and too thick. The herbs added a much needed bright note to the dish. - Confit of Abalone, Cochon jus, Herbs (3/5) The abalone was super delicate, but the pork jus read quite salty and too oily for the herbs to save. - Oyster, Cheese, Beets, Parsley & Milk Emulsion (2/5) This was a miss for me. The beet didn't mesh with the oyster. Really not sure what the cheese's purpose was. The emulsions while tasty and fun to look at were also kind of odd additions. - Roasted Pollock, Fennel, Grilled Lemon (5/5) Wow- perfectly cooked fish. Super delicate and soft. And the Leon after grilling had subdued lemon noted that just added a tiny hint of acidity to the fish. - Veal Cheek, Cannelloni Cabbage (5/5) Extraordinarily tender and flavorful with a simple, but robust sauce. Cabbage was inventive and tasty. - Lemon Chili Sorbet palate cleanser (3/5) Really cool to get pops of chili spice at the end of each lemon note, but there was also a significant lingering bitter flavor, like the chef had maybe seated too far into the rind. - Roasted Beef Filet, Peas, Spring Onion (5/5) Perfectly cooked beef, super tender requiring little knife action. Great sauce again. - Brie, Dijon-Beaune soft, Mustard, Ash Cheese Plate (5/5) So this is why everyone ends a meal with a cheese plate. Never really understood it until now- this plate practically changed my life. Served table side with a ton of cheeses to choose from, I got 4 amazing ones, though I suspect any choice would've been good. My favorite was the Brie, which was far creamier and dreamier than Brie I had ever tasted. - White Chocolate Shell, Sheep Milk Ice Cream (5/5) Really delicate half white chocolate shell within almost tangy ice cream. Really velvety texture. - Banana Macaron, Cherry Cream (4/5) Really good... delicate pastries. Perhaps overshadowed by the two preceding, earth shattering plates? - Rhubarb, Fresh Cream (4/5) Good rhubarb flavor. Very light, fresh whipped cream. - Value (5/5) 85€ for 10 courses really is tremendous value! - Final Word The chef is clearly a minimalist. See photos. This was great for me! Execution, execution, execution. Although there were a couple clunkers here and there, there were several memorable plates. I long to return to Beaune!

Excellent food and service!…read more A group of 4 of us went there for dinner. The place opened back up for dinner at 7 pm and already a group of locals were there. Before we got our appetizer the place was full. Three of us got the escargot (6) and it was delicious! The snails were hot coming out from the kitchen with spinach, garlic, and olive oil. The French bread was made earlier that day and was still warm. They were allergy conscious which was great for my sister who is allergic to tree nuts. She was able to eat the same meal as myself including the bread since it was made in house. We all got the beef burgundy which was just as tasty. It came with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. We got a bottle of wine that we split. All in all, great dinner. Best food we had so far in France. Our waitress was very kind and sympathetic to our small French vocabulary.
