The expensive salmon dish was over cooked and the wine list was very pricey. We used to come here when the fish and chips came in a wooden tray with a cute little bottle of vinegar. Still, it was a rather pleasant, and quiet, place to grab a drink, particularly since it was a Friday night when I passed through here. Like a lot of the pubs down here, there were some pretty nice beers on tap, and the staff were nice as well, however it really wasn't a favourite.

I had a delicious Cesar salad. Those who ordered a favorite kale with fig salad complained there was excessive dressing today compared to other days. The decor is a bit bi-polar. The front of the pub is your typical dark area with small tables. I much preferred the back that was filled with large communal tables and lots of light. The staff member who took our order at the bar then delivered our order. He complained of how busy it was and seemed annoyed. He could use some hospitality training.

Honestly, I wasn't really all that big a fan of this place, though that probably had a lot to do with it being a bit too fancy for my tastes. It's not so much a problem with the pub itself, and it did have some nice beers on tap, and a pretty decent beer garden as well, but it really isn't a place that I'd come back to.

Corned beef and hot english mustard, lamb with yoghurt, and herbed chicken. The mustard packs a punch! Herbed chicken very flavoursome. Reasonably priced, considering the suburb its in.

This is a large meeting space for professional talks on various topics. The talks are excellent and after each academic speaker shares his/her views there is a question time. It feels a lot like one of those pubs that appeals to the daytripper up here, particularly with the architecture, and of course of lovely beer garden down near the river. It is a nice pub, and it certainly has a lot of atmosphere about it, and in fact, feels that it is the original pub from up this way. The other thing that stands out is that it does have a nice selection of beers as well though the service, well, it wasn't the best, but it was still good.

An old pub by Australian standards. The high water mark of the 1867 flood is marked on the outside wall of the pub. A hidden gem if you will, but then again, from the crowds it attracts, it doesn't seem to be all that hidden. Still, I loved this place, and wouldn't have a problem coming back when it doesn't happen to be a Friday night.

The Courthouse is THE Inner West watering hole…read more Coming from a small town, I'm used to walking into a pub and knowing most of the faces. And yet, I wasn't expecting this familiarity to follow me to Sydney. Between walking through The Courty's front doors to finding a rare empty table in the buzzing courtyard out back, you inevitably run into someone you know. In country towns, this is because there's no where else to go. In Newtown, it's because you wouldn't want to go anywhere else. Monday to Sunday, the courtyard is packed with hundreds of indie 20-somethings slurping ciders, scooping sour cream onto wedges and screaming to be heard over the raucaus laughter of the three other groups of people sitting at their table. Capturing the heart of Inner West casual cool, there is nothing boastful about The Courthouse. In fact, with consistently great tunes pumping from the jukebox, good pub-food at decent prices, two different ciders on tap (yes, cider is a game-changer for me), a courtyard that defines summer drinks and weekly Crab Races (no word of a lie), it's safe to say that considering how clearly superior it is, The Courty is pretty modest. See you there.
