It is a blistering and extra icy -30C weather night in Montreal's south shore and, while the outdoor 1030 mall had ceased its daily hustle for the day; our late evening dinner at Le Balthazar turned into a very memorable and very funky euro-dining expérience... We were smart to use the underground parking which meant that we wouldn't need to start and heat up the car for a good 15 minutes on the way out; keep that it mind and bundle up, let's go! Once we made it up the stairs to the entrance located on the 2nd floor, we quickly felt welcomed by two super friendly hostesses that were smiling at their busy desk. Le Baltzar is a humongous, very casual yet upscale brasserie with plenty of bar, dining room and high top pub style tables and chairs. Many, many screens showing sports games keep the action going; while A stage at the center of its wooden "metro chic" space; houses an elevated Victoria's Secrets style stage platform, whereby a long haired young and tall lady - that could easily be mistaken for a runaway model- dressed in a festive tight Xmas green dress and winter long knit leggings, was the evening's play dj - gently shaking her hips, earphone in hand, spinning an effective Resto-appropriate pop mix, spanning from Rhianna, Clean Bandit and Ariana Grande to 80's classics by Eurythmics, Michael Jackson and Sade... great flow for the 'smooth operator"! The Le Balthazar menu is best described as fusion street French comfort food. It's freezing outside so of course, we had to partake in soup, mais Oui! The bird potage ($5) was a cream of chicken type of soup that easily looked like a dollop of a tv show prison food plate; but don't fooled by that first impression: it definitely tasted the part and earned a 10/10 for sure! try it if it is the "flavor of the moment" during your visit! Next, the Jack Daniels whisky battered chicken wings ($12) were crispy and just fantastic. They shared the starters spotlight alongside a plate of pan fried calamari with a chipote coulis ($15), and oh my! They were addictively very light and airy. We also tried the barbecue sausage and sauerkraut poutine ($15), it was very unique in the flavor profile and although good, we wouldn't order it again, way too much barbecue taste versus the standard ordinary French fries with cheese curds and gravy that is customary. Finally, The tartare duo of raw salmon And raw beef with garlic crostini ($18) was pure #FoodPorn on a plate and definitely a table show stealer on its own mmmm ...mmmm....emmmmh!!! For the mains, the beef skirt steak with garlic butter topping ($24) and the extra crispy haddock fish and chips ($19) were cooked to perfection and very memorable in taste and huge portion sizes, yes! The service was fantastic and the ambiance made for a festive, loud, yet very fun and affordable dining experience to remember. And, just like that, Before we knew it, it was time to put our warm coats on and head back into the icy night outside for our drive back... See you again very soon Le Balthazar, À bientôtI

This is the Bavette de boeuf since they changed the menu. (the crapier version of the bavette)

Who took the decision to change the menu? That person should get fired on the spot. The quality is way less than before and the price is the same. I had the bavette and they changed the sauce for a cheap white beer sauce with herbs that had no taste. You trow an expensive steak on top of a pile of fries and remove all the vegetables from the plate. You may have the most fucking steak in the world, i still can find where is the value. Yhe value was the balance the plate had. You remove that balance, you remove the fucking value. The waiter tried to offer free drinks to compensate but what we should had got should had been a 15% off, because no one told us that they changed the menu and replaced the food for shitier options.

Impressive microbrew selection on tap with a few Balthazar signatured items. Wish their tempting pub style menu was delivering on food expectation... Sad tasting burgers not worthy of good basket of fries. Let me update this review if I ever venture back for a premium poutine.
