Come for tea, peruse some books, stay to play games, and leave after a few beers or cocktails.
When my friends and I came here, I started out with a strong whiskey cocktail, had some beer, and ended with a speculoos macchiato (yum!). We won't talk about how I felt the next morning.
We passed by this place on our first night in Ghent and were intrigued by its offering: a combined tea salon/library/bar that is open 'til late (3am). We were also keen on having some of the free cookies they advertised, but it turns out that they had run out. Instead, they doled out tiny gold-topped jars filled with trail mix. Not quite the same thing when you were expecting a sweet baked treat.
We struggled to find a table, but we did eventually find a good one: the couch nook near the window, away from the bar and high tables and under the golden pheasant decal. And, not because it was freezing outside and warm inside, we did not want to leave. This is the kind of place I could sit from noon until the wee hours of the morning, writing my heart out and sipping on something delicious. If we'd had that kind of time during our weekend visit, I would have done just that.
Perhaps I shouldn't be sharing this review so the Le Bal Infernal doesn't fill up with crowds before my next visit, so I will end with a negative point.
Unfortunately, they didn't have many snacks left on the menu (we did manage to get some paprika chips halfway through our evening there), and I already recounted the cookie disappointment. So after several hours of game-playing and conversation, our stomachs were growling but full of alcohol, and we needed to leave. read more
