The Newstead/Teneriffe area is really starting to take off bars and cafés lately. All the new businesses and residential developments mean more people to accommodate and Lazy Dog is a relative newcomer in this area. Lazy Dog doesn't have it easy, up against the likes of Shucked, Sourced Grocer and the array of offerings at Gasworks. It seems Lazy Dog have realised that they might not necessarily be able to compete on their level easily, so they've taken their own path. They offer a few dishes at affordable prices, with friendly easy-going service. I'm a relative regular at Lazy Dog Café as I work in the Newstead area, so I'm only able to comment on the lunch menu currently (haven't yet tried breakfast), but my workmates and I are sold. We can get a Beef or Chicken burger and chips for $13, as well as a laksa, curry and a few other offerings. They also have started a $9.95 lunch deal which changes daily, with two options to choose from and includes a can of drink. Friday's currently have fish and chips which is quite good for the price you pay. Lazy Dog is best suited to anyone looking to get something on the run, or something reasonable without spending a lot of money. Perfect for lunch if you work in the area!

Ten dollars and fifty cents. Burnt.

A stylish café with a fantastic brunch menu. The coffee is top-notch, and their dishes, like the…read moresmashed peas and ricotta toast, are both tasty and beautifully presented. A great spot for a relaxing meal.

Suffice to say, if you've not yet ventured to this cafe on Arthur Street, I'd do so pronto. King Arthur is the new family member from the same folks that brought us Merriweather Cafe. Their ethos and value around high quality seasonal food remains and so do the friendly faces behind the counter. Similarly, just as the creation of the menu might has been considered and carefully constructed, the way in which the meals are crafted from the kitchen are given equal care and attention. I've been both for lunch and breakfast now and each time it has been a calming escape with a side of soul food. The gnocchi with lemon and tarragon in their opening days was, in true Goldilocks style, just enough. The serving size that good amount with gnocchi to savor but not be in a land of regret about the quantity you've devoured. And if you're so inclined, treat yourself to a post-lunch treat from their range of baked goods. I'd recommend the raspberry frangipane tart if it's available. Breakfast of lamb ragu on sourdough was hearty and a great winter alternative to porridge or eggs and bacon. Pro Tip: This isn't a large cafe so there may be a little wait during peak times.

My fooding adventures have been on hiatus for quite a bit, and will be till the end of this year,…read morebut I decided to take a break from all the craziness to visit Jak+Hill. From others' photos, the food looked decent, so I chose this one place. I had high hopes, after seeing their breakfast options and fairy floss dessert, but alas, I was underwhelmed. The location and place itself is decently decorated and in the middle of Spring Hill, but it wasn't particularly eye-opening. The girls there were friendly, but a bit disorganized service-wise (throughout my entire meal). I ordered a coffee to start, and as expected, was just alright. For sustenance, I had the corn fritters with smoked salmon on the side, but I almost didn't finish the corn fritters! They were lukewarm, chewy, and tiny! There were two - and smaller than the size of my palm, with a bit of smoked salmon, a poached egg, and rocket with tomato relish (that just tasted like tomato sauce). The presentation and the service were alright, and their lunch options looked good by the way other customers were chowing down... but they really need to work on their breakfast if they're going to keep serving it all day!
