Nice view of the river from here

3.75 The food was decent and the view is quite nice. What I liked: 1. Pasta with beef (not sure if it was short rib or braised beef?). Tasty and tender. It might be a little heavy if you eat only this, but if you are sampling different dishes, it was one of the better ones. 2. Pumpkin ravioli was good. 3. Calamari was good. 4. Pizza was decent. Not great, but not bad. What wasn't that great: 1. Mushroom lasagna: Lacks sauce and the pasta wasn't that soft. Lasagna is one of my favorite foods and this one felt dry and unsatisfying. 2. Meatballs are just ok.

Gnocchi di ricotta! Holy! So good. I was going back and forth between ordering that and the controfiletto con sugo alle chianti (sirloin) and I think I did not regret my decision. Ricotta gnocci, pumpkin puree, italian sausage and some nice slivers of cheese on top (probably a parmesan of some sort? I'm not good at naming cheeses, sorry) But yummmm! We kind of randomly chose Popolo and I was actually really happy with my meal. Highly recommend the gnocchi!

With stunning views of the river, a to-die-for menu and an enviable wine list, Popolo is certainly making waves as South Banks new kid on the block. This kitchen and bar does something a little different and presents it's Italian cuisine as share plates and tapas, and avoids being your cliche Italian restaurant by incorporating dishes a little more interesting and exciting than your average garlic bread and carbonara combo. I went along recently with a few friends, and Popolo treated us to a gorgeous night of relaxed dining and great food and drink. We opted to choose 6 or 7 different share plates (there were 6 of us) and shared everything. Worth a mention are the warm fried olives stuffed with anchovies, the pecorino board with muscatels and warm apricots, the pumpkin gnocchi and we also had the half serve of suckling pig which was absolutely to die for! On the muggy Brisbane evening we also indulged in a few bottles of Rose. The restaurant design and layout are fantastic, especially the blazing Popolo sign above the kitchen. One of the great things about Popolo is that (with the sound advice from our waiter) we ordered the perfect amount of food and left feeling satisfied rather than bloated and sleepy like many other Italian dining experiences I've had. The bill was extremely reasonable too considering we certainly didn't hold back on the food and drink. The only reason I hold out on the elusive fifth star is because the wait staff weren't yet well versed in all of the dishes and the wine list, but I guess this is to be expected from quite a young restaurant. I absolutely loved the Popolo experience, and will definitely be back again soon.

Cocktails with the ladies in the couch area (that we finally got to have after the other table left)

Went here for my friends 30th afternoon drinks and nipples. We sat outside, originally booked the lounge chairs but we couldn't get them straight away because someone made a mistake with the booking. However, they certainly made up for the mistake. The service was impeccable! The manager was really good at recommending good wines for us girls, when we felt like switching it up each time. The food was delicious and fresh. The ambience is great, as it overlooks the Brisbane city River and is surrounded my lush garden. The only thing I could suggest would be allowing the music to be a little louder in the outside drinks area, to create a bit more of a vibe (it was playing just quietly). Overall, great service, great food and drinks and a great view!

I was able to try the beautiful food at Popolo at a work function. We were on a set banquet menu, so everything was a delightful surprise. The carpaccio was so tender and tasty. I would return just to have a plate all to myself. The other stand-outs for me were the arancini and the pizza. By the time the mains came out, we were almost too full to enjoy the suckling pig. The tiger prawns also smelled amazing, but I didn't have room. I did manage to squeeze in a bite of dessert however. One has to balance the palate after a meal like that. We shared the chocolate donuts (which were also filled with yummy warm chocolate) rolled in orange sugar, with pistachio crumble, and sweet basil gelato. The donuts themselves were great. The orange sugar was very subtle and almost false advertising. The gelato was perplexing. It was so herby, nearly off-putting, but yet intriguing enough that we kept going back for more.

Oozing trendy loft style with a bit of ski château-chic, this swanky bar did nothing but impress from the moment we walked in. The exceptionally friendly staff, creative (and potent) cocktails, gorgeous fit out, and some really swoon-inducing menu items (think: Kentucky Fried Duck and the aforementioned truffle mac 'n' cheese) quickly proved that the substance matched the style. From the samplings I indulged in, I reckon I could have ordered page one of the gorgeous leather bound menu and been continually impressed - it's just a good thing that the menu items are all intended to share as the mysterious three letter menu descriptions piqued all of our foodie fetishes. Public continued to woo me with their gin cocktails (try the Space Gin Smash or Public Nuisance) and no one should leave this inner-city dwelling without trying at least a mouthful of their truffle mac 'n' cheese. The space is part city loft, part English manor and to their credit you feel comfortable enough in the high-back wicker "thrones", as I'll call them, to potentially outstay your welcome (not that the wait staff would make you feel that way. To be honest for most of the evening it was list we were talking to an old friend each time the waiter came around.) The menu is designed to be shared and on the night we visited became quite the conversation point between the group. With only three word descriptions your imagination is given permission to run wild as you concoct images of the food you will receive. The KFD (Kentucky Fried Duck) won a lot of admiration as did the simple and rustic baked beans served in a tin. This is one new Brisbane venue that is testament to our city growing up and coming into its own.

Exquisite food in a wonderful setting!…read more We came here for a work Christmas party and we were allocated the table right in front of the kitchen. Every dish was a masterpiece - duck liver parfait, fried Jalapeno peppers stuffed with goat's cheese, piquillo peppers stuffed with salted cod and figs wrapped in jamon to start with followed by meltingly tender beef short rib. I chose the berry crumble for dessert which was amazing. The wine was delicious and the service was impeccable. This was a wonderful treat and a fabulous way to celebrate Christmas!!

We started the night with Mooloolaba Prawns, Half Shell Scallops, and Duck Liver Parfait (in a share plate for two). The prawns weren't extraordinarily impressive, but they were good, though I enjoyed the scallops and duck liver much more. The scallop was tender, but not overcooked, and paired perfectly with the jamon, cauliflower and saffron. My favourite of the three was definitely the duck liver parfait. It was a great flavour with the Pedro Ximinez Jelly, and was probably one of the best liver parfaits I've ever had! I was torn between the Duck Confit Leg (yes, I love duck) and the Beef Cheek, and ended up ordering the latter as a recommendation from our waiter. Naturally, beef cheek is very forgiving, but I actually did enjoy the flavour of the marinade and sauce itself. My biggest complaint was that the meat was way too salty (including the swordfish I had a bite of), which left me thirsty the rest of the night. The horseradish mash was also a great flavour, but also too salty. The swordfish was perfectly done - not overcooked, and crispy on the outside. I was impressed with the mains that night - both with the presentation and the taste. Of course, as with all dinners I have with Jo, we ended with dessert. Between the three of us, we had the Spanish Creme Caramel, Crema Catalana, and Valhrona Chocolate Fondant. I'm not typically the biggest chocolate dessert fan (more of a fruit tart kind of person), but I think the Valhrona chocolate fondant won my heart that night. The orange marmalade ice cream wasn't as orange-y as I had hoped, but the chocolate fondant spoke for itself. It wasn't overly sweet, and was both rich and fluffy at the same time. I also enjoyed the Crema Catalana for the honeycomb and the fruit, but we weren't a fan of the jelly. As a restaurant in Brisbane, Moda has actually impressed me with their food, service, and ambience. The food did take a while to come throughout the night, but to be fair, they were quite busy for a Tuesday night! The chandeliers, pretty plates, space heaters, and Spanish ambience only made me fall in love with this place more.

Trying to find the right words to…read moreadequately describe what a intimate and quality experience we had dining at Gerard's Bar,the little sister to Gerard's Bistro, last Thursday evening. For the uninitiated, this is a charcuterie and cocktail bar. There are no large plates piled high with food. You won't go hungry and if you do it's most likely down to not ordering enough or correctly. Harsh but fair. If you're still reading and still interested, what you will find is a menu carefully crafted with a variety of salumi, a handful of cheeses (no decision overload), a selection of small plates (don't question it and just order the Sobrassada with grilled Bee One Third Honeycomb) and a drink menu to whet any appetite. The seating is bar style so prepare to perch yourself upon a Tolix stool and as you do, take a moment to notice the Moroccan tiles beneath your feet. And then admire the concrete bar tops. The wow-factor is in the interior and restaurant fit-out as much as it is the menu. Nothing has been overlooked including the jars of made-in-house pickles. For my dining partner and I we left with a bill rounding out to approximately $55 each. If you've dined at Gerard's Bistro, you know head chef Ben Williamson is about quality food for affordable prices and doesn't believe in charging over and above what is necessary. This ethos has carried across the James Street laneway. That $55 each gave us a drink each and more salumi than we care to admit (it comes in 50g servings but even this is deceivingly large), 2 small plates, a cheese and a dessert. Our dessert, inched so close to overtaking the love I have for the Sobrassada. The chef said to us he'd recommend the frozen yoghurt mousse over any of the other desserts (I'm still planning to try the Sarsparilla granita on my next visit) for its palette cleansing properties. We agreed and before us was a liquid nitrogen science experiment. Given it was a reasonably quiet evening, he took showmanship to the next level and made the dessert right at our section of the back bar table. The texture of the frozen yoghurt mousse is one I still haven't found the words to describe. Suffice to say: just order it and prepare to enjoy. In fact, go to Gerard's Bar with no expectations. Switch off, talk to the bar tenders and the chefs, watch them cutting the Mahi Mahi in front of you, blow torch grill the patties for the cheeseburgers, talk to your dining partner or group of friends, savour each mouthful and walk out satisfied and recharged.

Let me count the ways... I have to start with the charcuterie. Oh my god. I mean, anyone can do 'wine and charcuterie' on a menu, but this is another level. The dishes served here are incredible - every morsel tastier than the next. Things like the spicy spreadable salami, the truffle salami, great cheese selection - the duck liver parfait with PX (YES!) ...just out of this world. We had the mackerel tartare too, which I can't even begin to describe, but it tastes just as good as the theatrics of having pork blowtorched over it in front of you. The wine by the glass list is excellent, good craft beers, and they also have a full cocktail bar. To top it off, the head chef is one of the nicest and most passionate guys around. Food nerds will walk away very satisfied having dined here. I found it to be great value given the exceptional food on offer too. Ok, so I forgot to count...but I think you get the gist of why this place is amazing. I'm ready to go back now.

They take a lot of cues from most modern fitouts (subway tiles, etc) I ordered "The Master" which was their "standard" burger for $12. I like to order the basic burgers so I can fairly compare to other venues. As it arrived to our table the first thing we all noticed was the colour of the meat: pale, grey "beef" The burger came with the pickle pinned to the top, which in theory is a great way to keep the pickles separate if you're not a fan of pickles - but that only works if you drain the pickle before you pin it. Instead, the pickle juice made a soggy brioche bun. The burger itself was about room temperature, but then again, it was a hot day in Brisbane? The meat was the real disappointment. It was pale, grey and so very, very flavourless. I thought they might have mixed up our orders and given us all pork or chicken mince patties instead (4 of us got the same basic burger) but when I asked to clarify they insisted it was beef. One of our mates got the "Master Tom" which came with a dark beef mince patty. The Master burger is supposedly a lean mince patty, which is fine, but it flaked apart like you were eating fish! As a whole, the burger was then wet and sloppy (juicy patty) and the only flavour was a mild mayonnaise. We ordered dirty fries and they were OK - cheese and caramelised onions, but the chips they use are strangely dry. I'll revisit with another burger soon but I would recommend hastily replacing The Master.
