The food is great. They make their own pasta on site. But everything else seems sub-standard. 1. Surcharges. No prominent signs about surcharges as required under ACL [Australian Consumer Law]. This is illegal! If they surcharge you, contact your bank and have it reversed, because they have broken the law. 2. Staff are inattentive. They seem to nonchalantly ask "Can I help you?" then scamper off. They don't bring water, offer menus, Wi-Fi password, help you with the App, etc. 3. They have split bill, because you pay when ordering, rather than at the end. Which I quite like. It also means you can leave as soon as you finish, rather than trying to find one of the evasive staff that seem to scamper away from you. 4. Since Vapiano closed down (in the US), I've been really missing their food. I was pretty excited to have found they were still in business, just outside of the US. I enjoyed their pasta with chicken and asiago cream sauce. The place is serene and conducive to create a nice quiet ambient setting. But the food is what actually brings you back. My husband and I had been to Vapiano to our last visit to Brisbane. The food was good and the service acceptable. However, our latest visit last week was horrible. We entered the restaurant and the entry (and restaurant) were very warm. Brisbane was VERY warm while we were there and this restaurant failed at keeping it cool for a comfortable dining experience. The waiter wanted to seat us near the kitchen which we politely declined, asking for seats near the opposite end of the restaurant. He harrumphed and led us to a table away from the kitchen. He gave us our menus and promptly disappeared. It was 15-10 minutes before he came back to take our order. Our drinks arrived within 10 minutes and our food arrived about 25 minutes later. Our 2 pasta dishes were so salty we could only eat about 1/3 of them. All in all this was a very bad experience. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Our team headed to Vapiano for a colleague's birthday lunch and unfortunately it was a comedy of errors. I ordered just an entree and drink on the app from the table and it was quick and easy, but anyone who wanted the lunch special found that they couldn't order it in the app. So they headed back downstairs to the counter to order. My entree turned up and I ate slowly waiting for my drink to arrive. I was expecting good sized hand made meatballs but they were very small and reminded me of something available in the supermarket freezer section. After 20 minutes my drink arrived but nobody else had received any meals. Upon asking for an update from floor staff we're we're advised that they were coming. Some meals finally turned up after about 45 mins but 3 meals were still nowhere to be seen. When we asked again for an update we were advised that they were being cooked, but they came back a few minutes later and admitted that there had been a mix up and the orders had been lost but they could start cooking them, give a credit voucher or refund or both. Hunger won out, and the three meals were cooked and arrived along with some complimentary drinks, but in the rush the pasta was only half cooked. read more

The first time I went to Vapiano's was in Washington, D.C. in the States. The concept is the same everywhere and the service is efficient. I had a meeting in the city and it finished right around lunch time. I was walking around Queen Street Mall and decided to check out Vapiano. I saw a huge sign that said $10 pizza and pasta from 11am-3pm. I checked the time and was in luck. If you've never been to Vapiano's before. When you first walk in, the cashier will give you a card that you use when you decide what you would like to order. There are different stations depending if you want pasta, pizza, or salad/antipasta. When you walk up to place your order, you put your card up to the machine so that it logs what you have ordered. Then they give you a buzzer so you can come back and pick up your food. I ordered the pesto con spinaci which has spinach, bruschetta mix, pesto cream sauce, and mozzarella. When the buzzer went off, I came downstairs to pick my pizza up and they have about five condiments (thyme, oregano, pepper, olive oil, etc.) that you that you can freely use. The pizza dough and pasta are made in house! They also use cheese that comes from northern Queensland. It's a nice and clean place where you can take your time. There's plenty of seating and even a private area that can be booked out for parties of bigger than 10. When I finished eating, I wanted to do a little work and no one bothered me at all. They came by to pick up my plate and let me concentrate on my tasks. When I was ready to leave, I just give the cashier my card and they ring me up. It's a great process because if I had wanted to order more, I would have just added to the card. They leave a bowl of gummi bears for everyone exiting to sweeten up their breathe which is very considerate! Would definitely come back here. read more

Tourist review! I'm from California and I was visiting my aunt in Australia for a while. My cousins brought me to this place for delicious italiano dining. The setup feels like you work in the kitchen as a server and you're telling the cook directly what plates want to be made. Its pretty cool because you can modify your dish however you like--assuming you arent requesting anything too crazy. You get a number and then you find a place to park yourself. There are plenty of places to sit and there are plenty of bars/bartenders inside available. You also have servers that come around for drinks and desserts. The food wasn't super memorable but it was pretty good. I believe eating here is pretty pricey but you're pretty much paying for some hot pasta in a nice modern setting, the multiple bartenders, and decent views of the shopping center. I would say the food is somewhere between Olive Garden and Cheesecake Factory (for those from the states) in terms of quality. read more

I had heard allot about Vapiano from some friends who had raved about the time they went so folding to pressure and having a craving for some good Italian food I decided to go and check it out with a group of three other people. I had fair warning that we should go for a late lunch or early dinner because it can get busy. So this is exactly what we did we went at around 4 pm and to our surprise it was already quite busy, this could have been due to the fact that it was a Friday though. We decided to go any way and to be honest the line was not as bad as we had expected it to be. I was quite intrigued by the system of payment that they use which was giving each person their own chip card that tracks your orders. This is good for groups because more often than not there is some sort of dispute at the end of the night about the bill and paying separately can be a painful situation. I initially thought that the made to order idea was good but that does mean that everyone who orders something is going to be eating at different times which are not the best in a group situation. Overall the food at the end of the night was quite good and there were no other complaints in the service department. I think the concept can work well if you get it at the right time of day and not have to wait in different lines when you are in a group. read more

The barista at my favourite bakery in Camberwell recommended that I try Vapiano. He'd been to the one in Melbourne and loved it. Seriously, he kept on raving about it so I had to check it out to see what all the fuss was about. I was after some lunch during a recent weekend in Brissie and decided to give it a shot. I know why he likes it so much now. I tried the Chicken Pesto Basilico pasta and loved it. I'm a massive fan of their kitchen stations where you can actually see the chefs cooking your pastas, pizzas and salads on the other side of the counter. It's quite a fun process as well, you walk in and they hand you a card - basically everything you order gets loaded onto the card and you take it back to the counter after you're done and pay. My pasta was under cooked, the wait on drinks was 25-30 min, wait staff were impersonal and very involved in their own lives outside of work then the customers, a lot of staff standing around - a clear lack of urgency. Look we weren't on a huge time schedule but the wait on drinks was shocking. I feel for the poor teenager behind the bar doing all the drinks for the whole restaurant, but management should be on top of this and support there staff. Vapiano is unbelievable, I think people are far too harsh on it. You know how you read about a place and hear about a place and it gets built up in your mind and therefore is a tremendous disappointment when you actually experience it? Yeah, not the case with Vapiano; and trust me, it had been built up. I'd been trying to think of a great place my friends and I could go for a girls' night dinner, and finally remembered Vapiano. Thank you to whatever divine elements jogged my memory that day! Walking into Vapiano is like nothing you expect. There's no booked seating, it's first in, best dressed or wait around for a table - which people do, it's crazy - and you receive a personal Vapiano card that acts as your credit card while you're there. You effectively charge your meal/drinks/what-have-you costs to your card and you pay the balance when you leave. Genius! Why didn't anyone think of that before? Just don't lose the card, ok? Then there comes time to pick your food. You don't order like you in a conventional restaurant, no. You pop downstairs and line up according to what meal you want, such as pizza or pasta, and they cook it for you while you wait. This process gets a bit messy when there are a lot of people waiting to eat, but I think you have to experience it at least once. Plus, the food is really amazing, and they add their own herbs, which are picked from little pots right in front of you on the counter. You really don't get a more involved experience than that. Seating is also tight on a busy night, but if you can manage to wrangle a table, dining at Vapiano is a true treat. You can charge your drinks to your faux credit card too, and they have some pretty wicked cocktails. Vapiano is the perfect choice for a Friday or Saturday night dinner. If you like a bustling atmosphere, great food, and a unique dining experience, then this is your ideal place. Fresh pasta dish in town, Vapiano! when you enter the restaurant, you will be given a card per person, and scan the card when you order pasta or pizza in the counter. I really like this technology idea. It's very handy and simple. Less work for the staff as well. What I love the most about Vapiano, the chefs cook the pasta straight in front of you. I love spicy dish so I always asked for more chili in my Arabiata fettuccine. My boyfriend likes to ask for extra chicken in his meal. They can give whatever you like. there are plenty of sauces and pasta to choose. Also you can add more meat as you like. Prawn in Arabiata sauce pasta is my favorite. I've tried pizza once. It's not too bad but it's not the best pizza I think. That's why I always order the pasta. More delicious than pizza! It has nice desserts too. I tried tiramisu and it was not bad. After you pay you can grab some lolies in cashier counter. It's a great place for group as well as children. but if you come on weekend for dinner, make sure you come early. Vapianos probably has the best pasta and pizza dishes in town. Everything is cooked fresh and if you order pasta, it's made in front of you which is cool. They have a range of options from entrees to salads, to gluten free dishes to normal ones, as well as pizza and desserts. The prices aren't "cheap" but you get what you pay for :) I can go here over and over again without getting sick of this place. There are plenty of options to choose from so finding something you like isn't an issue. The restaurant has a nice layout and it's always cute with the added greenery around the place. There's free water upstairs too which is always an added bonus, as well as a bar for those of you wanting something a little bit extra. I've never had an issue with the staff - they've always been very friendly, helpful and polite. I've been here before and I'll keep on going here. Try it out if you haven't already! read more

I am a fan of Vapiano - I have been here a couple of times now and the thing I like about it most is that it is a really modern restaurant with pretty damn good food and a unique style I've not experienced elsewhere. I particularly love the smart card tech, allowing you to split bills by making sure that you pay for the right stuff, and being able to quickly 'pay' for drinks and food keeping the flow of customers moving through the main service areas. Having the fresh herbs and the little 'greenhouse' is a great little touch, as is having the olive oil on the tables and a small selection of fresh herbs. I don't think the lack of personal at-table service is a negative thing in this setting, as the main focus seems to be really around your group of friends sharing a meal. The anitpasti platter is absolutely delicious and is highly recommended. The freshness of the mains is great, but ultimately, one of the appeals of the restaurant being that it is so fast-paced is also one of its main detractions, in that the fast pace loses some of that care and quality that goes into crafting fine Italian food. All in all - love the place, recommend it, would take friends there any day - but not exactly your high-class dining experience. And it doesn't pretend to be. read more

Honestly, purely leaving this review so that no one else is misled by great reviews and conned into paying $70 for 2 pastas extremely below average and some garlic bread. The idea is great, the atmosphere is nice. It's the food itself and the people cooking it that create the issues. After a raving review from a close friend, and a night out on the city we decided to finish it with a nice pasta. Nice is not what we got. The girl that cooked our food very clearly didn't care for it. She was laughing and talking to the other chefs ignoring her cooking (here, you watch them cook your meal) and honestly put no effort in whatsoever. We ordered a mushroom ragyu and simple classic carbonara, two very simple pastas. She left our mushrooms, and the bacon and onion, to burn in the bottom of the pan. Then let the cream boil and tossed the pasta in it. We were left with brown, burnt cream and thick, gluggy pasta with the consistency of glue. If you're going to pay a decent amount of money for a meal, it's fair to say you expect a decent meal. If that's what you're after, walk across to the gyoza place beside it because vapiano is definitely one we won't be returning to. read more

Well, it's pizza and pasta. Nothing on the menu really grabbed me, but my meal was a good size and tasty. A friend who ordered a pizza with potato on it found the potato was uncooked. This was the second time she had that particular pizza, and both times got raw potato. Standing to watch your meal being cooked is a novel idea, and you do get input into what goes into it, but really, I'd rather table service. Nothing particularly good, nothing particularly bad, but I'd hate to be there on a busy night. Fortunately they DO take bookings, which I recommend you do if you have a group; all the large tables were booked out when we walked in. Oh, and if anyone from Vapiano reads this... I like the whole idea of knowing your food is literally so fresh you go up to the chef and order directly to them! Wicked. At each table are pots of basil plants and it looks so cool. Why the bad reviews? As much as I loooove table service there's something about the novelty of this particular place in getting your own food. You get a card -choose your pasta with combinations; what sort of pasta, sauce and toppings or Italian food eg: antipasto. Swipe your card, grab your buzzer and your meal order is uploaded to the card. Stop by the full bar for a drink, swipe your card and sit down. When your food is ready the buzzer will sound. Fetch your food and voila! Freshly cooked, warm pasta. I like this past place, beautiful upstairs and down! I enjoy adding the fresh herbs and oils. Lol at the person who's like "I heard you could eat the plants". I've been here with my family at least 3 times. Once I ordered a Margarita pizza. Apparently this Italian themed eatery is owned by McDonald's and is essentially a fast food chain store in Italy. Um, can someone please tell Hungry Jacks a note and tell them to lift their game? Vapianos is setting a new fast food standard. Pros: The large Italian eatery is down a lane in the centre of Brisbane and has a bar, pizza, salad and pasta. There is a standard menu but I always just start off with a base pasta and add my own ingredients- it's cooked in front of you and it's lovely to see the fresh past being made. Dishes are mostly tasty and serving sizes are good for the price. There are little pot of fresh herbs on each table to add some flavour and it's super easy to split the bill - they just hand you a card at the beginning that you swipe each time you get food or a drink. And each pasta comes with a little bit of crusty bread...mmmmm. Cons: It is a little bit pricey for what is essentially fast food and the menu is a bit limited. There is no table service and it can be some wait, standing their with your tray, waiting for someone to make your pasta, and then waiting for your friends to get served as well. And there is no other way to put this - their antipasto is crap. The bread isn't toasted or tasty, the flavours are meh and frankly I just expect better for the price. In summation: Pros far outweigh the cons and I will keep going back - definitely give it a go! read more

It's not that Vapiano is bad, but it just does not have anything that impressive about it apart from the fact that it looks cool and is in an alleyway. I came here with my boyfriend looking for a quick meal and the first thing that shocked us was the price. Mind you, we were probably being extra stingy that day. We ended up going for a Margarita pizza to share. I know Margaritas do not have much but this one felt really bare, and yes, I have had Margaritas pizzas before so I know what an amazing one can taste like. I did like the ambiance though, the basil pot plants were particularly cute and the place was very spacious. Since that first experience I have not gone back, there are just so many other restaurants located in the city that I would rather go to. read more

Vapiano looks so inviting with its sleek, crisp decor and little herb plants on the tables. I'm obviously not the only one who's noticed this because there is often a queue to get in here. One visit here, however, made me immune to the pleasant environment. The food is pretty meh. I knew something was wrong when I saw that all the pasta is pre-cooked. You choose your pasta shape and sauce and they get a container of pre-cooked pasta in the shape you asked for and then scoop some sauce over it and you pay for it at the end of a cafeteria style tray rail. Unsurprisingly, the pasta was kind of soggy and doughy and waaay past al dente. The sauce was okay and at least took some of the focus off the pasta, but the food is nowhere near what I'd expect it to be based on the look of the place and its popularity and prices. It's a shame that Vapiano's food is a let-down because the location and ambience are convenient and appealing. Unfortunately, even that's not enough to tempt me back. read more

Really good fresh pasta, reasonably priced. There's a whole bunch of different pastas and a whole bunch of different sauces, and you just choose your combinations. They also do pizza, but we didn't try this. Bread is complimentary with the pasta. I liked the ordering system where they give each of the guests a card that you swipe whenever you order food or drinks, effectively like a bar tab of sorts. So at the end of the meal, you go to the counter and you can either pay individually, or one person can pay for more than one card if they are paying for the group. Neat. The only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was having to stand at the counter and wait while the staff cooked the pasta. While it's nice to be able to watch them cook it if you're so inclined, if you're not then well, you just end up standing there. I would personally prefer a number system where you go up to pick it up when it's done. read more

If you're in the city and you've got a hankering for Italian, it's worth checking out Vapiano. It's not the most amazing Italian in Brisbane, but it's far from the worst. The pasta is prepared in front of you, so you get it nice and quick, and was pretty tasty. Pizza takes a little longer, and mine was a little inconsistent (once slice had zero toppings on it). There's olive oil and pots of herbs to pick from on the tables, which is a nice touch as well. You know what? It was tasty, and I enjoyed it, but I'm in no rush to go back there, and it was a bit pricey for what it was. At best, I'll say go check it out, and see what you think. read more

Vapiano is an unusual Italian restaurant located in the heart of Brisbane. Their food is tasty and their system is highly unique. When you arrive you are issued a swipe card; this is for you to use whenever you place an order of food or drink. A list of everything you consume will be stored on this list so that when it is time to pay the staff simply swipe it and charge you the appropriate amount. When you order your main meal there are no waiters or waitresses zooming around with notepads waiting to receive the significant 'we're ready' nod. You must go to the correct line; pizza, pasta, salad, and make your order there. Once you have placed your order, you are then required to wait there until it is ready. This means you can watch the staff preparing your food. The upside to this is obvious; it's always nice to have some reassurance that your food is fresh and carefully prepared. The downside is that the staff are rushed due to the high volume of people with growling tummies menacingly watching them. When I went we were in a large group and unfortunately, all of our food was ready at different times, so either those with prompt meals had to wait or we would have to eat separately. We chose the 'eat when your food is ready' option, which unfortunately resulted in some people being completely finished when others were just beginning. Despite this the food was good. I particularly liked how every table had a basil plant in the middle so you could add fresh leaves to your meal. Or perhaps they were purely decorative and we destroyed the design. The system could certainly be useful for big groups, perhaps we were just unlucky. Nevertheless I would recommend this as a good place to go with a smaller group. read more

Three out of five nights of fun! I went to Vapiano's with a bunch of friends on a Friday night. It was very busy (we had trouble finding a table) but we didn't have to wait particularly long for our food, which was a plus. On the negative side, I wanted to add pineapple to my pizza...and they didn't have any. What kind of a pizza place doesn't have pineapple? Weird. I think it wasn't gourmet enough for them. The lack of pineapple not withstanding, the food is all fresh and good quality and it is a reasonable price for a trendy restaurant in the city (i.e. I paid $19 for a pizza and I ate most of it, though I was very full). The bar also has a decent selection of beers and ciders, among other things. It has a really fun atmosphere and there are a lot more seats than it looks like from the outside. It actually reminds me quite a lot of a Melbourne restaurant (in a good and not pretentious way). Overall, I would be back for a night out with friends. read more

Fresh, fast and simple it's not, despite its catch cry. My one experience of Vapiano occurred after Friday night drinks a couple of weeks ago. I had to line up for forty minutes to order carbonara. There's been a lot of hype about their chefs preparing the food in front of you but is it really such an original concept? Wasn't Fasta Pasta doing a small scale version of the same thing? Isn't Teppenyaki just a classier version of this with more utensil acrobatics? At any rate, it may be fun to watch the chef prepare your food but what is not fun is watching the chef prepare everyone else's food ahead of you in the line for forty minutes. My feet were sore and I was starving. Unfortunately, my carbonara was just average. It wasn't terrible but I did need to add a lot of herbs, pepper and salt to give it flavour. Carbonara is actually a tricky beast to get right - some people like it with more egg yolk, others like it with more cream. I like mine eggy but with definite pancetta flavour infused through it. I like to give restaurants at least two attempts before I strike them off my radar, so I'll probably head back to try out some of their pizzas but definitely not on a Friday or Saturday night. read more

Fresh pasta made in front of you? Yes please! A member of the hotel staff mentioned this concept restaurant to us and we knew we had to check it out. It's tucked away in an alley off the Albert Street shopping plaza. There are outdoor tables, but the area is covered, so you don't get wet when it rains. We walked in three minutes before a major, and I mean major, downpour. The restaurant was pretty quiet when we walked in, but filled within minutes due to the weather outside. The concept involves you walking up to a chef station where you pick the type of pasta, sauce, vegetables, spices, etc. The chef takes freshly made pasta, prepared right on sight, and starts the boil. They then start your sauce, which I chose the bolognese. Don't look at the amount of butter they start with, but everything is better with butter. The whole process takes about 15 minutes from start to finish. My friend went to the pizza order station and placed the order, where they give you a buzzer to signal when your pizza is ready. You also have a full bar available at the other end of the restaurant with a very good beer selection of bottle and draft choices. Both food items were awesome! The pizza crust was not too thick, so you can eat all of it without feeling too full. The pasta was much heavier, but delicious. The pasta was also a little overcooked for my liking, but "al dente" doesn't seem like a popular choice for the general public. Great flavors, couldn't be fresher. Everything is paid for with a magnetic card that you "tap" at each station. You then take the card to the cashier and pay your whole bill at one time up departure. Staff was beyond friendly and smiling all the time. They could use a little more help, when the restaurant gets busy, to clear all the dirty tables, but I did notice a manager or supervisor step in to help.
