The wait is finally over and Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant has opened in the CBD! I decided to spontaneously have lunch here today, on the opening day, to suss it out. After a while, you get to know every possible restaurant in the city when you're often in the city and sometimes it's a little disheartening having to go to the same usual places. But Jamie Oliver's Italian deserves a 10/5. It's brilliant.
There's been a bit of hype surrounding its opening. With stores already around Australia, there were high expectations and big shoes to fill. I've personally been particularly excited and with my standards nothing but high, I went here expecting the unknown and expecting potential disappoint. But no. I was blown away.. Everything about this place has surpassed my expectations.
The menu is thorough, yet not overwhelming. There is a perfect selection and variety, ranging from entrees, to pasta dishes (coming in both entree and main sizes), to the traditional mains (beef, chicken etc.), to desserts, coffee and alcoholic beverages. With a bar downstairs, the options are endless. The kitchen has an open design, meaning you can see the chefs making your meals. I had the Prawn Linguini and it was nothing less than perfect. With a hint of chilli, a light tomato based sauce and the prawns already peeled and de-veined, I was one happy camper! Usually when I order something with prawns, I spend the first 5 minutes peeling the prawns which can be irritating when you're either hungry or don't want to make a mess. It's always more lady like not having to peel the prawns before you eat. The sauce was perfect, the chilli wasn't too much and the pasta is fresh (made from scratch on site) and was cooked perfectly al dente. They even have GF options for those coeliacs out there. The entree was lovely, just your basic bruschetta with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For dessert, we shared the brownie. Divine and made from scratch there too. You want to have a sweet tooth though, it's incredibly rich and I have a sweet tooth.
As for service, there may seem to be an abundance of staff, but really it is the perfect amount. As you walk in you're immediately greeted by a handful of staff members and shown immediately to a table. The restaurant seats about 200 people and there are two levels: the entry level and then the basement. We were seated near the bar, in a cute little nook on the side. The leather seating across the walls is fabulous! You can just melt away into the seat. The service is friendly and prompt, nothing like I've ever experienced in Australia before. It seriously is that top quality service you receive in the States where the waiters/waitresses are tipped based. It's impeccable. We had Jason, a really lovely young fellow, who managed to strike up a variety of relevant conversations. I've never really experienced a waiter genuinely stoked to be there, asking questions, giving suggestions and willing to lend a hand when need be with a massive smile and genuinely positive attitude. The food is brought out incredibly promptly. I don't think we even waited more than 10 minutes between our entree and the main. The timing is insane. Absolutely perfect if you're on a tight schedule and have minimal time for a lunch break. The place had plenty of people there too, so it's not like the chefs had nothing better to do. They've genuinely been trained to have a quick turn around...
The prices are reasonable, nothing above average. I would say you get well and truly your money's worth.
The location is convenient, situated right on Edward St just diagonally opposite the the back end of Tiffany's and just down from the main intersection near Central. Easily in a walking distance if you work in the city. The spacing is luxurious and the design of the restaurant is absolutely on point. You can tell there has been a lot of thought that has gone into its design. With a rustic look, plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and other food items around, a variety of different lighting and classic music tracks being played in the background, it's nothing but a relaxing oasis to escape the busy inner city buzz, even for just an hour. It's a whole new world.
This place is a must do! You have to go there to suss it out yourself. It's open 7 days a week from 11:30am to 10:30pm and would be perfect for dinner. I can just imagine a whole bunch of people going dressed up in lovely dresses, heels and men in suits, dining there before a show or a night out. It has a peculiar vibe in a very good way. It's unique. It's what the Brisbane market needed. It's a niche restaurant and it's hit the market right on the head. I can see it being extremely successful and a favourite by many, including myself.
Please do go here if you have the time. It will truly be worth it. read more
